The Nine O'Clock News: Local TV Stations That Have Them (with a note)

What stations in the U.S. have a Nine O'Clock News (note, in the case of stations in the Central Time Zone, we'll suggest the Eight O'Clock News, so WGN's (and any others in Central) 9:00 news won't count; and I don't know how to classify specifically which hour's news the Mountain Time Zone stations fall under because I know little about it; and I'm not sure if the time zones in Alaska and Hawaii can qualify with a newscast in the middle hour of prime time)?

At least one comes to mind because I have it on cable: WSBK's "TV38 News".

KCAL/9 in Los Angeles, L.A.'s last VHF independent, has a 9pm cast as part of a nightly 3 hour newsblock that runs from 8-11pm.

Fox 11 - Tucson, AZ - on fox west coast feed. always one hour earlier...

I believe KTXA 21 in Dallas/Ft. Worth runs news in the 7 PM and 8 PM hours. I'm thinking KRON did at one time, too.

So you're asking which stations have a 9:00 ET/8:00 CT/8:00 MT/9:00 PT newscast? (Just trying to simplify your question. :))

I know WSBK in Boston has a 9:00 newscast. That's literally the only one I know of, though.

(Stations in the Mountain time zone generally have the same "primetime" -- 7:00-10:00 -- as Central time zone stations. Best not to think about it too hard, I suspect.)

Yup. WSBK is sister station to WBZ-TV4 (CBS) in Boston. WSBK's 9pm news is produced and staffed by WBZ people just like WHDH/Boston (NBC) produces and staffs the 10pm news on sister station WLVI/Boston. Both WHDH and WLVI are owned by Ed Ansin who also owns WSVN in Miami.

KRON used to have a 9pm Newscast, but no more (now a My Network TV affiliate).

KBWB has 9pm newscast from KGO.

WSBK 9pm (WBZ)
KTXA 7-9pm (KTVT)
KCAL 8-11pm (KCBS)
KMYQ in Seattle has a 9pm newscast (KCPQ)

Not sure of any others - maybe in Las Vegas or San Diego?

When I lived in Iowa, no channel ran an 8 pm newscast...there was a 9 pm on Des Moines' Fox 17. ¿Who would run a newscast right in the middle of prime time?

Mountain time zone prime time is the same as east coast, 8 to 11. Midwest is the same as west coast for prime time, 7 to 10.

Nope! Eastern and Pacific are both 8 to 11 with 7 to 11 on Sundays, while the Central and Mountain areas are 7 to 10 and 6 to 10, repsectively.

Right now Arizona is on Pacific Daylight time...

This is a seasonal second...

But TV prime-time is always 7-10 PM (7-9 on Fox) in Arizona. West coast prime time is 8-11 PM despite being in the same time zone as AZ during the summer.

And, don't ever call Arizona's time zone "Pacific Daylight Time." The natives will burn you at the stake. This here is Mountain Standard Time and don't you fergit it! We don't want that dang Californicated time zone here. ;D

The only things the natives did for me was hand me a grand and a few free sodas while trying to break the bank at one of their casinos.

It seems they can use all the californication they can get. The rest of AZ can
keep it's standard time...

Then again the ghost of Ira Hayes is banging on my door now.

Channel 51 KNWS in Houston runs the syndicated ANN (American News Network) at 8 p.m. central time... but this isn't a local newscast so I am not sure this counts for this topic.. Also, I don't think anyone watches this!

Channel 3 in Phoenix had an 8pm newscast for a couple of years. It was cancelled a few weeks ago (along with their 10pm newscast) in favor of an hour long newscast at 9pm. And, yes, Arizona is technically in Mountain Standard Time. However, I just tell people that we're in Pacific Time in the summer and Mountain Time in the winter. I've not heard any criticism of my explanation yet by the native Arizonans.

Other than the fact that it's wrong? ;)

Besides, not all of AZ stays on Standard Time year-round. But you're a relative newbie to the state - I'll let you figure out who doesn't. :D

I always thought KTVK's 8 PM newscast, followed by Oprah at 9 PM, followed by news at 10 PM, was just a horrible programming decision. I could never imagine much crossover between the Oprah crowd, and people who watch news - even the "news" that KTVK runs.
