The numbers are out

Arbitron book for February shows WRCH FM still #1 with a 9.8 rating. The biggest move was by WDRC FM which went to an even 9.0 just behind #2 WTIC FM (9.5). Congrats, Ms. Winters!!!! WWYZ fell to 4th, WZMX was fifth. WHCN was sixth and the new WCCC FM went to a 3.4, up from a mediocre 2.8. WTIC AM led the pack with a 5,9 while WDRC and WPOP AM continue to stagnate with ratings of 0.3 and 0.2 respectively.

The '60s have nearly disappeared from the DRC-FM playlist and the early '70s are fading fast, while new '80s titles continue to be added. 9.0 is a huge number for DRC-FM, 12+ or not. They must be adding tons of 34-45s who'd never bothered to listen to the station before while still retaining a decent number of the older listeners despite the de-emphasis of their musical "sweet spot." This isn't really a surprise, as '80s rock and pop wasn't that big a change from '70s music in those genres. The real demographic challenge will come in five to 10 years, when '90s music needs to be introduced. Whither hip-hop?

What about WMRQ?

WMRQ does not subscribe to Arbitron and neither does the Gois cluster (WLAT, WNEZ, and WKND). There are about a half dozen or so stations in the market that don't subscribe, so the ratings are not an total representation of the market.

I've seen the book, MRQ is doing pretty well in the male demos.

The real impressive numbers are by WTIC-FM, they're just wiping the floor with Kiss 95.7. #1 females 25-54 across the week (RCH owns that demo middays though) and plenty of other #1 finishes.

No, ratings are just as important to the big noncomms as they are to the big commercial broadcasters. WNPR subscribes to Arbitron. Everybody can encode, you just have to pay big bucks to see the numbers. WIHS shows up, but it's little numbers. It's not really an accurate representation of their audience, nor does it matter. Listener support matters to them.

The numbers matter to WNPR because corporate underwriters matter to them.
