the nyc radio umbrella over the hudson valley

from the start, hudson valley radio listeners went to their local stations to hear if pete seegers wife won the beacon school board election.
they tuned into wput brewster, running pre sun rise authority low power, to hear if the schools were closed because of snow. they heard on sunday afternoons, wkip running the radio show gunsmoke.

as a am listener in the 50s and 60s, i would only listen to wmgm on 1050 khz and wabc on 770 khz for top 40 hits. back then we heard
no commercials that were hudson valley based on those stations. we listened to dan ingram on wabc. he along with lyle dean - lyle on network news feed from wls-abc chicago would cover the hudson valley from the nj stick. that pair was the best of top 40 am in the united states.

side-bar
the hudson valley was never a seperate tv maket. the nyc umbella tv was so big, the area never got their own network tv stations. poughkeepsie, kingston, newburgh, middletown was home to over 400,000 people by 1965. cable tv grew in the valley due to no local stations. examples of markets that are 60-75 miles from big city influence with network affiliates- springfield, ma, new haven, ct, colorado springs,co

You are so right on this.
We listened to Dan Ingram on 77/WABC. he along with Lyle Dean - Lyle on network news feed from 89/WLS-ABC chicago would cover the hudson valley from the nj stick. that pair was the best of top 40 am in the united states.
