The Oasis fires AM and PM drivers

105.7 KOAS has fired morning man Dave Caprita and longtime afternoon host Cat Lee.

Which one of these scenarios is most likely?

A. Duncan Payton replaces them with other talent who fits his vision of what the station should sound like.

B. To cut costs,The OASIS switches to the BA Smooth Jazz Network featuring such hosts as Dave Koz.

C. KOAS joins the bandwagon of Smooth Jazz stations that flip formats.

I'm guessing a combo of A & B. It wouldn't make any sense to flip formats. TO WHAT??????
Just another stupid PD/OD/GM decision that drives more listeners away from normal radio to satellite, internet, or other forms of entertainment.

Cat Lee was a GREAT representation of what that station should sound like! I'm sure Duncan has a "buddy" he can put in there instead of leaving the best person for the job....That station has tanked since he took it over and started messing with it.
Tom Chase and Sunny must be having a good laugh. Now there's a nice guy, and a good programmer who has shown you don't have to fire people to be successful. He has built a great "TEAM" at Sunny....Team...what a concept!
There are a few programmers in this market who understand this...Tom Chase, Cat Thomas, Justin Chase, and now Sean Lynch.(I'm still shocked Beasley got him!) Wonder if FLUSH will get flushed tomorrow...

Cat, you are a class act! It was a pleasure sharing the hallway with you for 2 and a half years! Thanks for being my friend. Everyone knows you will bounce back better than ever. We still need to hit up that burger joint you've been telling me about!

In other news, I STILL NEED A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyone? anyone?

So sorry to hear about Cat Lee. Super nice guy who absolutely loves smooth jazz and loves radio. Good luck my friend.

ah man! sorry to hear it Cat!

about 7 years there huh?

hard to believe it's been that long since i worked there at v108.

GOOD LUCK!!!

It looks like part of my "B" scenario is coming true. The syndicated Dave Koz show is Cat Lee's replacement in PM drive.

Say Dennis,(or anyone else with knowledge), is it my imagination, or has FM radio become MORE automated/syndicated over the last 10-15 years? And is cost the overriding reason for this? :p

Yes and Yes

Yes and Yes

Jay F couldn't have said it any better. To add a little of my own spin, there are a lot of people that get into top management positions, that don't deserve to be there. These people hire their friends, they hire their friends... Pretty soon it's the old gang from the frat house all running the place. They get lazy and greedy, because they know their buddy isn't gonna do anything about it. If things start to go south, they blame and fire the talent and replace them with some syndi garbage that works in some other market 2000 miles away because it's cheap and they get compensated under the table, or they tell the "Jefe" "There's a guy I worked with back in _ _ _ _ town that would be great here, and he's available", then they hire another one of their buddies. It's sad. A lot of people running the show these days have no respect for the listener OR the advertiser. I could babble more of my nonsense, but you've probably already stopped reading this...

I was lucky enough to work with Cat at The Oasis. I can tell you first hand that for Cat the music, the artists and the stations listeners always came first. His attitude was always...what's best for the station, how can we make it better? It is truly a sad sad day when someone who lives, eats and breaths the format is pushed out. Too bad for the city of Las Vegas also.

On the other hand, at least he's done having to deal with all the moronic bullshit from owner Tim Pollman and his consultant lackie Alan Kepler. I liken Pollmans success at The Wave in LA to someone taking over the reigns at NBC when Friends and Seinfeld were at their peak. Yeah he may have kept the wheels on the tracks but the credit for success belongs to many many other people.

As far as Kepler is concerned,[EDIT]. Neither Pollman or Kepler have any gut instincts when it comes to broadcasting. It's sad too because I see this trend happening all accross the country as PD's, Jocks and Production Dir's get replaced by fewer and fewer people with less and less talent.

Cat, I hope you land on your feet...as all Cat's do!! Take care bud and good luck.

[EDIT-profanity, vulgar content]

Cat-

You are a wonderful person, and an inspiration to many. Me included.

You provided me with encouragement at a time I was feeling pretty burned by the business. I know you will be fine, you have so much to offer and you will not soon disappear from this market, upon which you have made a tremendous impact. My thought and well wishes are, as always, with you.

Keep in touch . . . and all my hopes and good thoughts are with you. As you said to me, "keep the faith!"

Hope to see you soon!

maybe if Nevada wasn't a right to work state, and actually had some radio stations with AFTRA, there wouldn't be so many firings in las vegas radio

i.e. the entire OLD kdwn crew, doug basham, etc.

mred, what do U think?!

I read that longtime radio vet Carmy Ferreri is doing mornings at the OASIS. They will also have a "soon to be announced major market night show". What are they going to do steal Tesh away from KJUL? From their comments it sounds like KOAS is committed to Smooth Jazz.

All I can say, it's a real shame what's happening at the Oasis and Area 107-9! Ever since NO TALENT, NO CLUE, Dunkin Dork took over a lot of talented people lost their jobs...I hope you feel good about yourself Dunkin Dork!!!

Before the Dunkin Dork days both stations were really sounding good...KOAS was doing well in the numbers, and Area 108 sounded focused and right on target...right talent, right imaging, good music rotation with current and gold (Bad numbers because of bad signal). It's really sad because now Dunkin Dork has completely destroyed the programming on TWO radio stations in Las Vegas. Shame on Dunkin Dork...but MORE SHAME on the complete moron that hired Dunkin Dork in the first place, what the hell were you thinking!

There is some good news, this is probably a self-correcting situation: 1.) Dunkin Dork will drive both stations into the ground. 2.) Revenue will end up in the crapper. 3.) Finally both stations will sell as a fire sale. Hopefully, whoever buys them will hire competent management.

Again, it really troubles me that real radio pros, who are passionate about their jobs, get let go...And people like Dunkin Dork keep landing on their feet. What does this say about our industry??? No wonder terrestrial radio is loosing out to IPods, satellite, internet...ECT.

Better start flushing, I hear former Fresh and KKLZ Program nob Don Hallett has been talking to upper management at Oasis and 108. Not sure if that's a good thing or not for anyone involved, but???

these multiple firings sounds tragic, especially from the entertaintment capital of the world, where talent SHOULD be nurtured. Look what hapened at KDWN: Basham, Hart, Truman, Stahl, Bair, etc. all gone.

It's time for station employees in New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona to organize and join the Aftra Phoenix Local. UNBELIEVABLE that their exec. director there tells me that not one radio station in NM,NV,AZ has joined AFTRA. What a disgrace that NV and AZ are right to work states! Come on, guys, it's just $1,300 for health insurance, let's do it!

mred, what was morale like back in California? What do you think about this "mess in the Southwest?" What were things like back in California where everybody's unionized?
