The Oasis gone in Santa Fe

I found the Facebook page for La Zeta 106.3 and it now shows they are also on 95.9 in Santa Fe and 96.7 in Western NM. So it looks like smooth jazz is out in Santa Fe. It is still on 103.7 in ABQ but with all the changes Vanguard has been making lately I wonder if there is reason for fans of this station to be concerned? It has been going for 8.5 years now without any noticeable changes but it also relies on local business advertising and those have been some of the hardest hit by the pandemic. So can this format survive these uncertain times?

Uh oh. Not good at all. I wonder if KOAZ is hanging by a thread because of the loss of events, ad revenue and closures of venues and restaurants.
Losing KOAZ would be terrible news at least for me. I'm a regular listener. Their music mix is top-notch.

Events, venues and restaurants are not a significant ad revenue source for local radio. Events in a market that size and for Davis' formats are few and not huge. Local restaurants are not good clients for anyone, and venues like night clubs even less.

The bigger drop in markets like ABQ has been in national accounts. His ratings did not get him on the buys for those. Local direct is less affected, and his stations deal with small businesses and relationships.

He's probably doing better than most operators there. His real issue is the debt for the station he bought last November, which came with practically no billing.

The owner used to post here a long time ago. I remember him being very passionate about his station. I didn't see any sale notices on the Santa Fe translator, so it may be technical issues.

Vanguard Media, owner of KDLW, bought KSFE/96.7 Grants. So that's one piece of the puzzle. And Telebeeper of New Mexico changed the program source for the translator, K240EC. I have to wonder if Vanguard is leasing the translator because that KDLW signal doesn't look very good in Santa Fe.

Hope it's not another sign, but both their sister stations social media have been reactivated recently and KOAZ has been left out, unless they plan on doing it later. I do hope the Oasis pulls through and wish the best for its staff, I know I read an article that posted in 2017 "Chill-out at The Oasis" that Don Davis commented that it has been a struggle trying the lights on in NM's rough economy. I believe it is the most smartly-programmed NAC/SJ station out there (of the non-Internet) ones left, and one of the few overall that's not fallen in the trap of being "beautiful music with saxphones"

Update: the Oasis New Mexico social media pages are back up...

Yay :)
I hope they will make it this time around. Best smooth jazz station in America!

It's been a while since I paid attention to this station, but it looks like Vanguard Media has played lots of musical chairs at its stations. The Oasis doesn't appear to be on terrestrial radio, but the station streams its programming online. Their facebook site functions as their website at: Log into Facebook, and the stream can be accessed at:

I have also noticed the station has personalities (likely voice tracked), and airs local ads. If the station is online only, this is a bit of a rarity.

Are you sure? Because last I checked, 1510 and 103.7 were still NAC/SJ. 95.9 is gone and is now SS.

It didn't say "KOAZ Isleta"? The IDs might be sporadic in nature. There's a couple of folks from Albuquerque who can confirm if things have changed.
KOAZ never had the 103.7 frequency in Santa Fe. It was relayed to the capital on 95.9 via KMYN/KSFE 96.7 out in Grants. Same personalities but they inserted different local ads for Santa Fe (much like a 'semi-satellite' TV station would do). That station is now simulcasting the Spanish station on 106.3 in ABQ, so KOAZ access is gone for Santa Fe (besides, 103.7 on Sandia is blocked by KTRC-AM's translator locally). The 103.7 in Albuquerque is relayed from the AM 1510 licensed to Isleta.

103.7 (K279BP) in Albuquerque is still airing smooth jazz. AM 1510 however is rarely on the air, I think they just use the license to feed 103.7 legally maybe turning it on periodically to keep the license. Likewise AM 840 is also off while 102.9 (K275AO) is still on and 1240 has a low signal feeding 92.9 (K225CH). 103.7 in Santa Fe (K279CX) is owned by Hutton Broadcasting and airs KTRC 1260 which is probably one of the last left-leaning commercial talk stations remaining. Vanguard has used 95.9 (K240EC) in Santa Fe via KSFE 96.7 Grants to provide service there. But now the owner of that translator is deceased so there may be some uncertainty going forward. Of course KDLW is currently the lowest rated 100kW FM in Albuquerque so they may change that before anything happens to The Oasis.

Which I believe is still illegal per FCC guidelines. FCC says (If it hasn't changed) an FM translator must be fed from another source...and if it comes from an AM it must come from that source.
I've been looking for the ABQ 1510 at Mountain time sunrise for years to no avail. If KGA fades down, often KFNN Mesa is there on early morning day power (or the Denver station). 4.2KW should be enough, as I have heard KIVA's 10KW up this way rarely on 1600.

an AM's FM translator doesnt have to be fed by the AM air signal, just in the same method the AM is. It's also pretty easy to change the translator originating signal and have it not show up in the FCC database. I once found a parent station change buried in the applicaiton for something else a station was doing.

And if this were an HD sub channel on an FM and the translator was a fill in translator.. it could technically feed the HD2.. fill ins can be fed in any method.
