The old analog days

I live about 60 miles east of Macon. I kinda miss analog. I remember getting all Atlanta TV stations most everyday. 2,5,11,14,17,36,46,69 came in pretty clear for where I live. I was just wondering how far north did they go? I guess that could be adumb question because it would depend on the weather. But on a normal day when skip was low how far north? Just curious. I also remember a few times channel 13 from Birminham AL jumped over WMAZ in Macon. That was wierd.

When you go "north" you start running into some hills, and not so small mountains and ridges. Some of the resulting valleys were not that great reception wise. Some of the Hill and mountain tops were "golden". We could get channel 2, 5, and 11 in the basement using a portable TV set during tornado warnings in Jasper. I have yet to find an under $100 battery powered digital TV to test the digital Atlanta Channels. Good friends live on a slight 'rise' about 3 miles east with in sight of several mountains, and they get all the Atlanta and Chattanooga TV stations. Your mileage may vary.

I live in Chattanooga on Missionary Ridge and receive WSB, WAGA, and WGCL reliably at 100 miles, and could do better with WATL and WUPA if not for co-channel analogs (which also eat up WAGA's SNR). WPCH is blocked by WBXX. WPBA is blocked by WKSY-LD. WHSG is blocked by WYHB-LD (no loss there; even if I did like the programming, it's available locally on WELF). I've received WXIA a few times but my VHF reception hasn't been a priority for me.

From Wikipedia

Like many urban areas in the South, Missionary Ridge is notorious for its kudzu infestation. The city of Chattanooga has undertaken a trial program using goats and llamas that graze on the plant. In 2007, the goats grazed along the Missionary Ridge area in the east of the city

So Trip, see any llamas llatelly :)

My folks lived in Watkinsville in the late 90's. There were several times KXAS in Dallas would jump WAGA in Atlanta. Man, I miss NTSC.

What analogs are y'all getting? I only get WUVM 4 (Azteca-Mexican) here. The FCC says I should get
22-WSKC
23-HSN
14/26-WTBS
25/32-WANN
28-WWID (I think....cant remember if that's the right call letters or not)
38-WKTB
45-WIRE
49-WXID
53-WDTA

but that site hasn't been updated since the DTV transition and ALL of those have either (as far as I know) gone silent or flash cut. Not that I would be missing much.

I *should* get a whiff of WJCT 33 (LaGrange) and the feux WATV 3 (Peachtree City) but so far, *NOTHING*!

All I get is audio bleedover from WABE on channel 6 and some funky Air Traffic Control chatter on 14 & 15.

Sure wish I had ***SOME*** form of local LP around here that was presented in the language of my own home country. Heck, I'd even settle for infomercials or Jesusvision just to have a nightlight in the spare bedrooms and something to DX/play around with when the ever-present Digital s k i

WSKC has a license-to-cover for conversion to digital on channel 22.

Has flipped to digital on channel 45. (W45DX-D)

14/26-WTBS

Channel 14 is strictly an application, the FCC hasn't acted on it yet. Channel 26 is licensed in analog mode; they also have a Digital Companion CHannel permit on 30. I might guess DTV-30 is on the air, and they ceased to see the point in operating an analog station that few people will watch.

25/32-WANN

See above. Licensed on analog 32, has Digital Companion Channel on the air on 29. Probably decided leaving the analog on isn't worth it. WATL is operating on channel 25.

28-WWID (I think....cant remember if that's the right call letters or not)

Having trouble identifying this one - WDWW Cleveland? Has a permit to flip to digital on channel 28, which may have been implemented.

Has flipped to digital on channel 47.

My info is that this station is on channel 40? Has flipped to digital. 23-HSN is now operating in digital on channel 45.

Can't identify this one. WDNN Dalton? See 28-WWID: has a permit to go digital which may have been implemented.

Moved to channel 28, then converted to digital on channel 35.

but that site hasn't been updated since the DTV transition ...

They're pretty slow to mark archive records as such. It's not enormously unusual to see facilities listed which have long since been superceded by something new.

WJCN, which is still authorized in analog & has no digital conversion on file. Can't ID "WATV". (is that the possible pirate station that was being discussed a few days ago?)

I'll trade you our omnilingual analog station WIIW-LP channel 14 Nashville... "omnilingual", its programming has exactly the same meaning in every language.

(WIIW has been transmitting color bars for more than three years...)

WXID's license was canceled.
