The Old KNBR played music, right?

But wait, Jerry... KSFO lost the 49ers because Gene Autry's vote on the Giants pissed off Eddie DeBartolo? You'll have to explain that one, please.

Back then I did listen to KFRC a lot more. So you're right, I'm sure. I thought I remembered a jingle that KNBR had that was close to the "you" thing.

The KFRC "You" jingles were done by TM/Century. I just listened to a little of the KNBR "Good Times" jingles and they also sound like TM/Century. So you're right.

Around 78 or 79, I found out about KGO and since then, it's been my main station. I hope to see some more KGO jingles someday at the site you provided. Not necessarily the "jingle", but that song they play at the end of the news just before the host comes on. They change it every 5 or so years. I'd love to hear the old ones again.

I don't remeber KGO's jingles changing very often at all. The current sound I think is just a "harder" version of the previous run. That's what I remember anyway. My problem with KGO's current jingles is that they're not singable at all, so "KGO" doesn't run around in your head.

The jingles I remember in my life from KGO were:

(1) "KGO San Francisco, serving the beautiful city by the Golden Gate", which was an embellishment of the ABC Radio News sounder of that era (pre-1962). ("di-di-di-DAH-di-DAH-dit")

(2) "KGO, KGO, one of the good things about San Francisco", which was full orchestral and sounded very very classy. It was used when Jim Dunbar took over programming and moved KGO from full service to news/talk.

(3) "KGO NewsTalk, radio 81", and variations such as, "Here's Owen Spann, our man on the current scene." which ran in the 70s.

And then I seem to remember an earlier version of the current jingles coming in right after that, maybe 1985 or so. Or am I wrong?

Oh I remember this now ... The DeBartolos were trying to buy a baseball team and Autry, who owned the Angels as well as Golden West Broadcasting, was one of the votes against. The DeBartolos took their "revenge" in any form they could. One of them was moving the Niners from KSFO to KCBS.

All this KNBR and Bay area radio stuff just runs through my brain for some reason. Somehow we ended up KNBR listeners after Sherwood left KSFO and ended up with lots of hours of good listening through the years. I've had about a dozen cars since college and they've all had a KNBR preset, even if it meant Sally Jessie Raphael on Talknet (but oh so briefly), for cryin' out loud.

Thanks for the link. Takes a very long time with my dial up. I did hear the Al Jazzbeaux Collins clip. At least the first few minutes. It was nice to hear his opening song again. The KGO song was not there btw. Did not listen long enough to hear if anyone got "majuberized" (sp?) or not.

SCV IS RIGHT!

THE AUTRY VOTE AGAINST A DEBARTLO BASEBALL BID..IS WHAT COST US THE 49ers. I'M SORRY I DIDN'T GO INTO DETAIL ABOUT IT IN MY POST YESTERDAY BUT I WAS RUNNING OUT OF TIME.

Jerry,
Good to 'see' you on here. I only vaguely remember the old KSFO and those radio programs, but I definitely remember 'The 5 O'clock shadow' on Channel 7!
It took a few years(a profile of you by Ben Fong Torres) until I realized why that voice doing traffic on KGO radio sounded so familiar!

Any more anecdotes about the last year or so of 'Autry KSFO'? How far in advance did you all know you were going to be let go?

Because I know that everybody has been dying to check it out, please to enjoy a sneak preview of the radio museum's classic collection of KNBR recordings and related stuff:

And, with a tip of the hat to Jerry Gordon, take a moment to hear his wonderful final broadcast on Golden West Broadcasting's 560/KSFO:

(Scroll down to "1983" for the link.)

TO NONAME: WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS.

I DON'T RECALL BEN'S PROFILE OF ME. MAYBE I WAS SLEEPING THAT DAY. I KNEW BEN BUT DON'T REMEMBER THAT.

YOU ASKED HOW FAR IN ADVANCE WE KNEW OF OUR DEMISE AT KSFO. GENE AUTRY'S WIFE INA DIED AND HER WILL STIPULATED THAT MOST OF THE GOLDEN WEST RADIO STATIONS BE SOLD, WITH THE MONEY GOING TO CHARITY. WE KNEW FOR 6-9 MONTHS THAT A SALE WAS IMMINENT WE WERE HOPING THE NEW BUYER WOULD KEEP US. BUT KING BROADCASTING HAD THEIR OWN STATIONS AND THEIR OWN PEOPLE IN TOWN. THE TOOK OVER THE FREQUENCY AND MOVED THE STATION DOWN THE STREET.

WE ALL STAYED TILL THE END. ODDLY ENOUGH,,AT THE PARTY
AFTER THE LAST SIGN OFF (AT MULCREVY'S) I MADE GOOD CONTACT WITH JOHN CATCHINGS OF CHANNEL 7 WHICH EVENTUALLY LED TO MY GETTING THE 5' O'CLOCK SHADOW GIG. IT LASTED 4 YEARS. I ALSO DID A LOT OF KGO RADIO...NEWS...TALK (FILL IN)..TRAFFIC.

THE MOOD DURING THE LAST FEW MONTHS AT KSFO WAS STRANGE.
I DON'T HAVE ANY GREAT STORIES. IT WAS A GREAT SIX YEARS FOR ME. I HAD A LOT OF FUN, ESPECIALLY ON THE "COMEDY HOUR"
LOTS OF LIVE GROUPS AND COMICS.

THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

Well, it was 20 years or so ago! I remember one quote, which he used for irony: You told him you'd been listening to one of your KSFO shows in which you mentioned 'The Shadow' would be that night's radio drama, and you'd then said, 'I wouldn't want to be the Shadow for all the vodka in Russia!'

Well, after all these years, I finally know the 'why', along with 'who' and 'when'! Thanks!

It's just interesting to think how no station today would get the kind of 'send-off' KSFO got... not even holding everything over for a Monday, rather than a Friday!

Worked out pretty well...for Aaron Edwards, too!
THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

Thank you, Jerry!

And as for 'Newname vs. Noname'...only the Shadow's hairdresser knows for sure! ;D

When I was at KSFO in the early 73-Dec 13, 1983 (The sale to King) Walt Lee and I and Pat Hillard did the
Network,(The studio Engineering) At the Park it was usually Rich Schmale and Chuck Suggs.

We all got a chance to do the Candlestick Engineering when there was a Producer and an Engineer.
As they started cutting costs. Suggs and Schmale did the engineering/producing, as one job Then KNBR Got the Giants in 78.

When KSFO Got the A's It was the same set up. BUT they did away with the Network engineer, and just had the studio engineer cover it. When King got KSFO, I Did the Network when they were on the road, and the Park when they were home. Ken Pries did the Net when they were home.

Production Boy,

I think I know who you are, too. Unless you buy lunch at Globe the next time, I will reveal your secret identity ... as Paul Harvey, Jr.!

Bwah-hah-hah! Mmm-bwah-hah-hah!

Good day!

Production Boy,

I think I know who you are, three! And unless lunch at the Globe next time is on you, I'll reveal your secret identity...

as LOU RIPA'S LOVE CHILD!!!!

;D ;D ;D ;D

Jerry, Dj and Rick...

OK, I may as well tell the group here who I am...I'm one of the two Japanese Twins who sings to Mothra.

The only reason I'm in the Bay Area is I know they will never spray for Moth(ra's) here...

We may need to put O. Bradley-O. Bradley on this one... He's the one who was always "digging down deep to get to the bottom to stay on top!"
