The OLD Tucson POWER 1490 Web site is still running today

This is a pretty amazing discovery...

It's hard to believe that an AM station in Tucson targetting 12-24 year olds would even bother putting up a Web site in 1994. The Internet didn't even begin becoming mainstream until around 1996, did it? Weren't computer nerds (definitely not Power 1490's target) the only ones who knew anything about the Internet in 1994? What other radio stations had Web sites back then? Power1490.com looks so much better than most Web sites did in that era.

I noticed that Power 1490 had the same logo (the one shown on the banner on the home page, not the one that appears at the top of each page) and slogan that Power 92 had until the end of 1993. Power 92 changed logo, slogan, and format at that time.

It's tempting to think that someone designed years after the format changed as a tribute site…but all the information there looks legit and very specific to 1994.

According to the information below, R-Dub registered (or maybe renewed?) the Web site in late August 2004. Did he design the site at that time???

After giving this some more thought, I'm 99% convinced that R-Dub created that site from scratch in 2004, trying to make it look like it's been around and stagnant since 1994. I just can't believe a site like that could have existed at such an early phase of the Internet. He probably has a very good memory of working at the station (and/or he has lots of airchecks) - that's how he has so much detail (such as the Top 30 countdown, upcoming concerts, etc.) He probably created (from scratch) the images like "Street Soldiers with Bruce St. James", "The Downz Teen Nights", etc - I can't imagine that's something that would have existed in hard copy form that he would have been able to scan.

It's a brilliant idea - he certainly had me fooled (and maybe he still does...) Whatever the case - great job, R-Dub!

By the way, looking at the pictures section, there are at least 2 pictures featuring the same logo that is on the top of every page. So maybe they also changed their logo at the same time that Power 92 did.

Look at the picture of "Fathead" on the DJs page. I think that's clear evidence that this site has not been around since 1994.
