The Olympics on NBC

Expect The Peacock to show most of the coverage on tape-like it does in the past. NBC's coverage still continue to suck-like it has been. Many sports fan would love to see the games shown LIVE-as it happens. Consider today, 8-8-8 your lucky day. The Flame lighting ceremony starts at 8:08PM Beiijing time; 6:08AM in Chicago, & 7:08AM out on The East Coast. Viewers here in the states will have to wait tonight to watch this amazing spectacular. What Gives?

The solution is to watch it on CBC. If you can't, don't be mad at NBC for how they chose to cover things.
Instead, be angry with the FCC or whoever it was that prevented the States from being allowed to have the CBC as a viewing option in this modern day 500 channel universe.

I believe people should have the right to choose which channel to watch the Olympic coverage on.

I'm very thankful to be in Canada, the true land of the free ( ;) ) where I can choose NBC or CBC to watch the Olympics on.

(CBC is doing live coverage right now...this morning!!)

The fact that NBC is promoting their coverage as being live is odd, although possibly not wrong. I haven't caught them saying any specific activity will be live, so they could be planning to broadcast the Marathon on Sunday live. Still ...

Apparently, I went to CBC's Website, and it is unavailable at this point. Northernmost cities (Like Seattle, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo) are quite lucky to pick up CBC and many other Canadian broadcasting channels, and they're the lucky cities to watch it LIVE. I might go to YouTube to watch the lighting of the flame. NBC has one more olympic coverage left in its contract (In Vancouver) Therefore, the next network MIGHT plan to show the olympics-LIVE as it happens. Thank god. We're living in the 200+ Channel Universe.

There could be a possible speculation All The Olympic Coverage MIGHT go to Cable exclusively. We'll see what develops.

I was going to watch only the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics but since I found out the opening was tape-delay (don't know about closing yet) I'm going to skip it. I figure this evening tape-delay would be edited extensively and also jam pack with video packages and lots of commercials, both regular and pop-up. Unfortunately, I can't get this CBC channel in my area.

Most of the NBC networks are showing alot of events live overnight and I just noticed that Comcast here has added the soccer and basketball HD channels which well also show live events.

Well who the hell cares about the Olympics, I'm trying to get coverage about war unfolding between Russia and Georgia and all I get is how 8-8-08 is "lucky" and the John Edwards sex scandal.

If past Olympics are any indication, NBC will likely tape-delay the closing as well.

Ever since NBC has gotten the multi-olympiad rights to the Olympics (starting with the 1996 Atlanta games), NBC was practically tape- and fluff-happy with the whole event.

Thanks to NBC's influence, the swimming and gymnastics finals will be shown live in prime time, even though it will be 10 or so in the morning in Bejing. In fact, they said in a press release that 75% of events will be shown live in some form on tv and online. If judging the fact that every soccer game from the past 2 days are already up, they are probably going to put up everything on demand at nbcolympics.com.

Also, tape delaying the Olympics is nothing new. CBS and ABC have done it as well over the years. I remember one US gold medal skiing performance in 1998 on CBS wasn't shown on tv for nearly 24 hours. Also, the famous US-USSR hockey game in 1980 was also on tape on ABC, even though it took place in Lake Placid.

Too bad in spite of what NBC is going to do everyone still has the same complaints about their coverage.

By the way, NBC's Olympic contract goes through 2012, and ABC/ESPN and Fox are also in the running for future Olympics. If ESPN and Fox's coverage of other sports is any indication, I would rather see them on NBC.

NBC has a brand new affiliate to broadcast the Olympics. WMBF-DT/32 signed on in Myrtle Beach/Florence, SC (DMA 103) this morning. Bye-Bye WIS and WECT on cable and satelite in that market.

Cox added 4 additional channels for the Olympics.

Apparently The Only part I watched was the flame lighting ceremony on YouTube. And it all went great-without a hitch. The Torch Bearer went up to the very top of the bird's net. He was flying all the way up-Just like Peter Pan, and then The Flame was fully lit.

In the words of The Fantastic Four's Johnny Storm: "Flame On!"-It's Game Time.

lets not forget one thing ..

When the Beijing olympics flame is extinguished,it will end.. for now ,a VERY one sided battle between CBC and NBC ,
but NBC better hold on to their hats..a new battle begins in 2010 in vancouver

NBC vs. CTV/TSN/RDS

Whenever the flame gets put out after 2 weeks of competition, NBC would probably show it in Prime Time, just several hours after the ceremony ends, and athletes from all over the world will come home jet lagged and tired.

If they showed the Olympics live there would still be just as many (probably more) people complaining then too. People would be unhappy that they're missing all of the good action while they're at work during the day. Watch it online if you really MUST see it live. Otherwise, on with the show!

Those drummers at the beginning of the opening ceremonies were cool...

Cool! Welcome WMBF-DT! Are they a digital-only station? Also, are they under an LMA with another station?
Yes, WMBF is digital only on channel 32. It was originally an analog CP but the owners decided to go ahead and sign on digital. It is not a LMA--it is owned by Raycom and is a complete stand alone full service station. The news department will air 5 hours of local news a day with a staff of 45. WMBF is the first station built from the ground up all HDTV---yes, its news will be 100% HDTV. The Myrtle Beach/Florence market already had 4 full powered network affiliated channels 13/CBS, 15/ABC, 21/CW, and 43/FOX--NBC has always come from WIS-Columbia and WECT-Wilmington. WMBF is already on all area cable systems and Dish. Directv is refusing to carry them until Oct. 1.

I'm going to REALLY pick nits here :) -- WMBF is *not* the first station built from the ground up for HDTV -- KOHD in Bend, Oregon beat them to it.

The problem with online feeds is the stability and the legality of them. They could have preempt The Today Show and told the affiliates not to worry about the routine news/weather/traffic reports so to have uninterrupted continuous live coverage of the opening ceremony. Then replay it during the evening for those daytime workers. But that would make too much sense, and probably end up costing NBC and their affiliates money in the end by airing the replay.

It would be interesting if ABC/ESPN reclaims the Olympic rights from NBC, meaning ultimate coverage on not just ABC, but ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, ESPN Deportes, and probably ABC Family.
