The Party is over!

I would've gone with a different name...but I'm not the programming expert.

From allaccess: "CROMWELL Top 40 WQZQ (THE PARTY)/NASHVILLE VP/GM BOB REICH confirms that the station is going to spin the format wheel with a target date of OCTOBER 3rd to land on Hot AC with the new moniker, VENUS. OM JIM PATRICK will head the programming effort, and MD/middayer SAM EASLEY remains in place.

Morning show trio LULU, BRAD & TRISH all shift to afternoons, being replaced by JEFFERSON-PILOT syndicated morning stars BOB & SHERI. WQZQ night personality TRIPPER will stay on to produce them."

"...there was once a station named venus...who's signal sucked a big..."

So (1) Cromwell has been busier than

we've given them credit for being, huh?

(2) Does this signal they're in the market to stay?

(3) Aren't these changes pretty close to what was being suggested should Citadel or someone else buy the stations?

(4a,b,c) Why all these questions? Why no answers? What do I know?...............Doug "NashRadio"

P.S. Venus is a pretty big hint they're aiming for a predominantly female audience, no?

There was talk of a change. But this change and with "Bob and Sheri", my goodness. I hope the change is right and I hope "Bob and Sheri" can do better then before (2000-WRQQ).

Venus is also a pretty bad name for a radio station ...can you see two women talking at a cocktail party saying "I listen to Venus." I don't think so ...Branding 101, never name a product something others would be embarrased to tell each other in public.

Well, at least they didn't it "Diva".

Re: So (1) Cromwell has been busier than

So, The Party, which signed on the air on Labor Day 1996 lasted nine years. NINE YEARS. About eight years too long, if you ask me.

They had to do something. CHR as a format is suffering, and Hot AC is an underserved market in Nashville after Star 97 went away. This is a good move for Cromwell, but then, going to a 24/7 phone-book recitation would have been better than The Party.
______________

They should have gone Rhythmic CHR. I'll bet Clear Channel is happy about this. I know I would be. Yes there is a hole for Hot AC, but it's a rather small one, especially since most of that audience is in love with Jack. Personally, I'd rather hear Hot AC than Rhythmic CHR, but I don't think it's the right decision. there's a big enough audience here for it. Hot AC died when Lilith Fair did.

And interestingly I predicted 102.5's move to Hot AC right after Star 97 went oldies. I'm sure that post is still up here somewhere.

The 97.1 signal is good, and look at the trouble STAR had. The 102.5
signal is...well...it's really good in ClarksVegas. Venus. Vegas.
Has a ring to it. At least Cromwell is serious this time, and didn't
just recycle the same airstaff around, or add another syndicated
morning show. huh? They did? Then perhaps SNAFU-102 might work.
______________

What Cromwell doesn't get...

You are sooooo right. Cromwell doesn't get that people aren't listening because they don't respond well to their air staff. Nashvillians have already given Bob and Sherri a collective yawn. Plus, the same people are in charge of all of their failed format attempts. If they really want to get serious about making money off of their radio stations, the first thing they need to do is get is get rid of the management staff and bild a staff that understands this market.

Re: What Cromwell doesn't get...

I am sure they will be able to build a great management staff
by increasing the number of strip club ads even more. It ought
to work really well with the new female audience instead of
12 year olds the Party had. The name Venus will be more than
appropriate. Bob and Sherry, huh? That's stepping out there,
isn't it. 1.0 share on the way, again. Maybe someone at Cromwell
will see this and do something right. If they think more
Celine Dion, Phil Collins and Sheena Easton is they way to
go, this may be even "better" than the Fan-fiasco.
Yep, radio's reachin' for that connection with the listeners
again.

I'm sure they can still use Buzz to barter their tab.

Lifetime's morning radio program originates here. If they really wanted to target women, they'd air it. But then I doubt Lifetime would want to deal with them.

Considering posts here and elsewhere following the flip of Star 97, why not suit up Rick and Bubba on Venus instead of Bob and Sheri?

In a perfect world that would happen. I wish it would happen.
Rick and Bubba in my opinion are a better tag team than
John Boy and Billy.

However, Rick and Bubba is usually reserved for Classic Rock or Classic Hits or Country station listeners. (Hence Rockin' Hits 104.5 had Rick and Bubba)

Naw man, them boys flagship statien is WYSF down in that there
Birmingham. It's sort of a soft rock station. Why wouldn't
a bunch of classy women like listenin' to a couple of
good ole boys from Alybama? Maybe they ought to play music
in the morning and be different.

Rick and Bubba ought to be on The Fan-less.

> Rick and Bubba ought to be on The Fan-less.

Interestingly enough, R&B fans begged 106.7 to pick up the boys after the demise of Star, but they stubbornly stuck to Mike & Mike. Time has well proven that they'd have been better off picking up R&B with its legion of followers. Might have helped bring folks into their other programming. Hey 106.7: It's not too late! How about building a redneck rock station at 106.7, led by R&B? In tandem with your 95.5, you could kick 103 around while it's down.

The Rooster attempt was the only shot Cumulus will consider
for 106.7, which is unfortunate given the market changes since
then. I've always said a format like that, hence, the old
"real" KDF would have worked if promoted and given time and
would be cheaper to operate.

A Jazz format would attract local advertisers at reasonable
rates and maintain a 2.0 share, which is all that signal
can be expected to hold. Maybe a 3.0. That would allow it
to run virtually cost-free locally. Christian or Spanish
are two other options that have been kicked around. The
key is try to find a nitch that is removed from the big
formats. Still, I was surprised that Blazin' was dropped.

What a lot of people don't get is that Cromwell doesn't get it....period. They've tried to be "Nashville" stations and it has never really worked. From the "Rockin' Country 102.9" days to the present, Cromwell's management has been less than stellar. They could dominate if they went back to their original cities and tried to be the local stations they really ought to try and be.

Cromwell isn't a Clear Channel or a Cumulus or a Cox. Despite their flaws, the latter 3 do know something about the business.
