Sadly, I must report the passing of friend and mentor to many of us, Jim Palmer, 78, of Springfield.
Jim worked in Moberly and Mexico, Mo, before moving to WPEO in Peoria and finally to WCVS in Springfield in the early/mid-60's. "Skinny Jim" was the morning mayor, and program director of WCVS for many years before moving into sales and becoming General Manager of WCVS-WFMB.
A lot of people who have stayed in broadcasting worked for and were mentored by Jim. Just a few names you might know who come to mind...sorry for any omissions: Greg Thomas, Dan Walker, Brian Pierce & Kellie Michaels, Jim Moore, Bob Murray, Dave Benson, Dave Morgan, John Spalding, Jeff Hoffman, and thundering herds more.
Jim took us and developed us, polished us, and held us to a higher standard. Just when we'd get a good grasp on what he wanted us to do, he'd raise the bar.
He made a little class 4 AM station (1000w days/250 nights) rock solid and sound like the WLS of Springfield.
Did you work for Jim? Please post.
Central Illinois broadcasting was better because of Jim Palmer. RIP, Jim.
