The Pathetic State Of WGSO-AM

Wednesday afternoon, the biggest news in New Orleans was the conviction of William Jefferson. WWL broke into their sports show, WIST simulcasted WGNO-TV. What did our other talk station, WGSO-AM, run? One of the worst shows on radio, "Patriot Radio". No mention of William Jefferson, except for the National News at the top and bottom of the hour.

When is WGSO going to stop selling out their afternoon drive shows to the highest bidder? When are they going to put out a quality product?

None of the shows they run in afternoons would ever be on the air if they weren't paid for. "Taxpayer Tea Party Hour", "Saints & Fools", "Life Begins At 50", "Irvin Mayfield", "Dan & Dave", "Patriot Radio". These shows are terrible. It's no wonder WGSO can't sell advertising and doesn't appear in Arbitron.

NOTE TO WGSO MANAGMENT: You don't appear in Arbitron because NOBODY"S LISTENING. Put on some programming that people care about and want to listen to.

WGSO is a great example of what happens when rich lawyers buy radio stations to show others how to run a radio station because the lawyer is smarter than those who are in radio as a profession. Same adage is true in this case as when a person tries to defend himself in court....the client has a fool for a lawyer. The radio station has a fool for an owner. That kinda sums it up, nolaradiobuff. ;)

how much is an hour on wgso????????????

if you buy the hour do you own the commercial time in your show?

i would guess the hours cost different priced but if anyone knows please post

I don't know about Nights, when Kenny Wilkerson is on, or weekends, where they just added Liz Reyes.

Afternoons, 3-6PM, are going for $1,000 an hour per month. You control the advertising (WGSO will fill with their sponsors/promos until you get some sponsors). You also get like 50 :30s a month ROS that you can sell or use to promote your show and another 100 :15s for promos (although you can also sell these if you like).

Basically, when the station has no sales, they are happy to get the $1,000 a month and giveaway advertising to the hosts. If they sold out the 15 hours M-F, even discounting some, they're bringing in $12-13k/month. All it costs them is a board op. $12-13k/month is more than they were billing when they were trying to sell afternoons with Bernie Cyrus.

They are also discounting if you buy multiple hours. 2 hours = $1,600/month. Don't know if you get double the free spots.

Good grief, this station really stinks. Not sure if it’s better or worse than Namer’s show/station, though. That might have been worse.

That’s a good question - who is more talented - Namer or Wilkie? Tough one.

Namer was a nut job on display, I tuned in for comic relief. I miss Ed Butler and Ron Hunter, those guys were on the edge. Edge of whatever. Ron Hunter would make a rain storm sound like Armageddon. Then there was some guy named "Paul" in the early am, say 5:00 am on 690 AM around, what, 2003 maybe? I liked his run.

WGSO of 1980, there was a radio personality in a wheel chair. What was his name? That guy was great. Of course, today's 'GSO can't begin to compare.

Guy in a wheelchair: Dan Gilbert. GREAT guy.

No Wilkie, but a great guy.

(The last part was a joke - he was a good guy, and pretty talented.)

Just bought several hours on WSGO......going to allow the best AIR GUITAR PLAYERS in the Region to compete on the air. No visual I know but who cares right ? The winners every week will have a smack down of AIR GUITAR " YO MAMMA" jokes...good idea !!! maybe let the callers have a say as well .
Think this show idea will help ? What if i chuck in some free snacks ???

Gerry V - Almost anything, even Air Guitar is better than the crap that is on WGSO.

By the way, if you need a copy of "Yo Mama" for background music, just ask and I'll get it to you. I also have "We Like Ugly Women" laying around somewhere but nothing about "Pink Panties" (I literally teared up when I heard you tell that story).

Keep up the good work. I painted a target on Osterlind's back so, as soon as somebody takes the shot, we'll get you back on weekday afternoons.

The " Pink Panty " story is very dear to me as it is true as you know.It even makes me laugh. The expression on my moms face and her laughing was priceless. A " Thunderbolt " moment in my life.....a classic moment wasn't it ?.......GV

OMG! Reading this, I have to believe, if I were still in NOLa I'd treat WGSO like the radio version of Fock Snooze Channel: punch over to it on Tuesday or Wednesday, when I absolutely, positively CAN'T wait til the weekend for my S-N-L fix. :-[

(( Board folks: what's the deal with the emoticons? Keeps writing the word, not showing the symbol. ))
