The Peach Has Finally Ripen?!?

R

Guest
I was listening to 97.7 FM again, on tonight. I do believe The Peach has finally ripen. Heard some Oldies tunes on there.

If the new format is now in place, hope Great South will have success with it. I wish them well, with the new format.

I know that many of us have been waiting for the change to occur, for months now but I have a feeling that it has occured, as of today.

WKLF was still playing Southern Gospel, last time I checked, on yesterday.

I am not too sure on this but I'm almost certain that WHPH will ditch their all Sunday Gospel program and music block, once the new format has been established.

Now that The Peach has ripen, this station will focus on mostly Rock and R&B tunes from the 50s to the early 90s, with a strong emphasis on Classic Rock and Elton John type music. I am almost certain of it, since Alexander Broadcasting (WALX, WJAM and WMRK Selma) is helping Great South run this station.

Alexander has Oldies on WMRK 1340 AM, here in Selma. This station plays a hodgepodge of Oldies from the 50s to the early 90s, with a strong emphasis on Classic Rock and Elton John type music. The Peach may be similar in their presentation. If they are, this station promises to have a big variety of Classic Hits and Oldies. Get ready for wide playlist, that will be close to The Eagle 106.9 FM Birmingham, with Classic Soul and Love Songs mixed in.

Just wanted to share this info with you. Hope you are ready for The Peach. They will have a variety of music, that will simply amaze you. Expect them to play songs that no one else will dare touch.

I switched to 97.7 this morning and found the oldies, too. I was wondering if it was another one of Great South's schizophrenic episodes, but it looks like that the station finally changed over, after two months. I noticed WHPH has been alternating its hourly ID as "WHPH, Jemison", then followed by [add whatever southern Shelby county suburbs you want here]. I remember they were still ID'ing as "Jemison-Clanton" one time this morning, though.

I found this on a search a few days back. It's a listing from the southern Shelby (County) Chamber of Commerce website.

It looks as though they have (or are going to have) some type of business office in Shelby county. I hope they do well, too, but after two months of confusion about what they were planning on doing (and reading posts on here about how Great South operates its other properties), I wonder if a format change is really going to help them in the long run; I think there are other issues they're going to have to deal with.

You may be right about that office. They now say this: WHPH "The Peach" 97.7 FM, Jemison, Montevallo and Calera. They focus on music from the 60s and 70s. Heard Ms. Gloira Gaynor's remake of Never Can Say Goodbye, earlier today. Also heard songs that most 60s and 70s based Oldies stations are known for playing. Even heard some Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye with Tammi Terell, Billy Joel, Harold Mevin and the Blue Notes and the O'Jays.

This station sounded very impressive to me. I liked their presentation. Hope they will have success with this new format. If it doesn't sell in Clantion, I predict that it will sell in the southern burbs of B-Ham, with no problem at all.

P.S. Hope you enjoy this new station, Passtheword and anyone else that will be listening to it. I may be wrong but I predict that Gospel will now be confined to WKLF AM. Since the FM has changed its format, I can see Alexander Broadcasting and Great South ditching the Sunday Gospel Music and Preaching block.

Re: The Peach Has Finally Ripened?!?

The Peach billboard on I-65 (near the huge Confederate flag) doesn't make any mention of the format. I have tried to pick up 97.3 to hear what they sound like!

Seems like most, if not all, of Sunday's programming on the FM is southern gospel and preaching. I could see them possibly dropping the gospel music, but not the preaching, at least not for a while, since they might still be contractually obligated to air them.

Did this person say if they were going to do Southern Gospel or Black Gospel? Just curious.
