The point about saving KIOL is this...

leave the classic rock songs for the classic rock station...WE WANT SOMETHING FRESH ! I heard Zepplin's Black Dog on the drive home on KIOL and threw up in my mouth a little...It was/is a great song, but I have it on the box set at home I don't need to hear on the f'ing radio anymore, I first heard the song when I was in the freaking 8th grade, so I am just a little tired of hearing it...I am planning on starting my mid-life crisis in a few weeks and I must know what cool NEW rock songs are out there ASAP! SO please for the love of Pete leave the classic rock stuff for the classic rock station!

Radio is just like any other corporate entity, go with the same old same old, status-quo, don't rock the boat etc...until old school radio is on the verge of going bankrupt (which will be the case in a few years) they won't do anything different...so I am just wasting my breath on nothing...

As I understand it, KIOL's library consists of about 4 decades of rock. The question on your part is where the emphasis should be placed. Others have stated, and I think it is possible, that at a given time of day the playlist may skew toward older rock versus new rock. I think there is a variety of rock that is being played - but you need to make your wishes known to the people at KIOL. They should be directed to some extent by their listeners.

I agree. I think that it can be a great station. After all it wouldn't exist if it weren't for those of us upset over the loss of KLOL. Cumulus listened...so hopefully they will listen to those of you who want more variety. I too want more variety...some heavier stuff, some different Ozzy besides "Mama I'm coming home"..maybe even some hairband stuff like Poison and Skid Row. I think the nooner is awesome with Wendy Miller...she plays a lot of stuff that I haven't heard in a while, however she also plays requests that are in the regular playlist too. They need to get an evening DJ with the personality of Uncle Nasty...he threw in some stuff you wouldn't normally hear during the day.

You know, I just don't see the difference between what Mix does and what KIOL could do. Mix mixes (no pun intended) it up between some different genres and time periods but they don't stray from center for very long. I guess what I'm saying is that if KIOL could figure out what "center" consists of in there own opinion, then there is no reason that they can't play Van Halen for song one and switch to Green Day for song 2 while going to Soundgarden for song 3.

Here's my KIOL fix...

To explain the playlist--the focus is consistently on 90's and currents. You will notice several repeats of Bruce Springsteen, Exies, Green Day, Staind, Foo Fighters, Audioslave. Newer bands like RA, Days of Fire are also thrown in--no indie bands show up on this list. This station would only play as much alternative as the active audience generally allows. You'll find most of these currents on MOST active rockers, especially Green Day.
The classic rock is formulated to where it appears just enough to give a "best rock of all time" illusion, but not enough that it deserves to be called a classic rocker.
The dayparts shift in the AOR direction. If you'll notice, during the early morning hours, Pantera and Slipknot are played, but both are acoustic tracks.
Those who know the bands will figure that this station is just rotating songs. Those who don't will just think they are hearing some cool acoustic song.
The station is meant to get slightly different audiences at different times.
I think this would work. Leave many comments but don't just tell me it sucks or it's great. I want detailed elaboration from everybody on this board.

Uh, no. Please. Billy Joel to Motley Crue. Going from marshmallows to Chili.
If you must, please choose a Crue tune that hasn't had the dimples worn out of the disc. Too Young to Fall in Love comes to mind. Try and play Billy Joel in the elevator or the PBX.

Seperation of Oldies with the aforementioned STAIND tune would be wonderful.

Time for ZEP to slide. Something off of THIN LIZZY'S Renegade if you must.

This song could be replaced by the equaly depressing Pearl Jam elderly woman behind the counter in a small town.

No, If you MUST choose a Haggar solo tune this ain't it!
And Van Halen / Haggar could use a buffer between them.

> VAN HALEN drop dead legs
> RA fallen angels
> GODSMACK serenity

Choose another tune, please. They have many. Just choose one at random that's edited for radio braodcast.

Please, don't stick Beck here! It sucks the testosterone out of the set.

NIRVANA is a real button-pusher.

New Album. Listen to it and see what fits regardless of title!

> PANTERA becoming
> IRON MAIDEN the trooper
> MUDVAYNE happy?
> SOUNDGARDEN black hole sun

Too close to AUDIOSLAVE. Cornell's voice twice in 20 minutes?

Mandatory QUEEN? Thought the selection was good. The shorter the Queen song the better.

My 2 cents.
Actually you got a good playlist.

saving KIOL

problem is the format's going away or evolving all over the country.
There is just not enough GREAT music out there and, unfortunately, when you're a current-based format you're a slave to what the record companies decide to put
out there.

Re: Here's my KIOL fix...

Billy Joel should never be played in this format

My personal preference would be a track they never play.."LOOKS THAT KILL"
> SYSTEM OF A DOWN spiders
> SLIPKNOT vermillion pt. 2
> TOOL prison sex
> PINK FLOYD run like hell
> TANTRIC hey now
> NIRVANA lake of fire (unplugged)

Kiss is good, but there are so many better songs. How bout Christene Sixteen?
> TED NUGENT great white buffalo (live)
> FLEETWOOD MAC go your own way
Fleetwood Mac should never be played on this format.
> THREE DAYS GRACE just like you
> HOOBASTANK same direction
> BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mafia
> CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL have you ever seen the rain?
Creedence should never be played on this format.
> STONE TEMPLE PILOTS plush
> FOO FIGHTERS best of you

The police should never be played on this format.

Personal Opinion...Most Aerosmith that is played should be not be past like 1978.
>
> 3pm
> LED ZEPPELIN rocky mountain hop
There are so many Zeppelin songs that could be played. I don't think any specific Zeppelin song should be played more than once, maybe twice a week. How about Nobody's Fault!
> BLACK LABEL SOCIETY suicide messiah
> BREAKING POINT show me a sign

This is stretching it for Yes. Maybe, but definitely no Owner of a Lonely Heart.
> AUDIOSLAVE your time has come

Now your talkin....That's a good classic band that fits the format. I would prefer to hear Baba O'Reilly and Bargain to name a few. Live at Leeds rocks!!!!

> SEETHER remedy

No a big fan of Hagar...I would switch the station, but it does fit the format.

Beck is pushing the envelope, but I would say that this would be refreshing!

If your going to play classic rock, then you have to play songs that rock.
Aerosmith pre 1980
Bad Company
Led Zeppelin
Boston
Def Leppard
Ted Nugent
Thin Lizzy
Kiss
ACDC
Van Halen...no Van Hagar
Foghat
ZZ Top pre 1980 just because their from Texas
Stones...no early stuff and definitely no Start Me Up...argh!
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Who
Foreigner pre Jukebox Hero
Blue Oyster Cult
Black Sabbath & Ozzy
Judas Priest
Scorpions
Pink Floyd
These are just to name a few...and these bands should be played very little, but enough to keep the classic heritage alive. And when played, there should be at least 6 songs of difference so that basically each song is only played once or twice a week max.
There is one band I think a rock station should play and maybe you all think I'm crazy, but Sweet is one band that never gets any spins. There are 3 or 4 that they could play....Ballroom Blitz is a rocker in my book. Also maybe some Cheap Trick, and I'm not talking about I Want You To Want Me.

All in all, it's looks good Slater. The definition of Rock to me is very broad, but I think when you call your station "Houston's Rock Station", then I think rock means every song has electric guitar and it's blowing your skull in half, and I think that could imply the edge that everyone's looking for in a rock station.
It just seems like KIOL is doing things half-assed and are afraid to to step out and really rock the city. They are never going to be a full force in Houston if they don't move get their format straight and start rocking. We are already seeing the trends for the past month and both KTBZ and KKRW are up. KIOL needs to start stepping away from all the classic rock and start doing the type of format that you have posted. They need to be different than the C.C. stations to have true success!

But what do I know?.....time for another shot of heroin!
