The point is...get to the point and fix WKBE!

Can someone please tell the big bossman that WKBE The Point needs some direction. Fix #1: stop letting the sales department play program director. Fix #2: go to the local golf club and drag the sales manager back to work, and fix #3 tell a certain account executive that his days of programming and on air work reached its peak 20 years ago...just worry about selling the station and let the programming professionals do their job. To many bosses and not enough smarts.

Knowing that the Point and Company have a first class / top rate General Manager in place, I would tend to totally discount your allegations here.. So youthinkyouknowradio ?? Be nice..

I agree about a top rate General Manager. I was talking about the sales manager...The best thing for that building was a good GM. Time to clean house in the sales department. Just being honest.

Clean house - clean the format - HEY - why not SELL THE STATION to somebody who knows how to make it run. Someone with a CLUE!

Too bad we have all these crummy corporate clusters with stiff stuffed suits who rely on their own tastes in music and that of a few consultants in faraway lands (ABC/Pamal recently used a "musical advisor" based in MUMBAI!)

From what little intel that I know, sounds like things are rolling along quite nicely on Everts Ave.. It's easy to say, clean house etc. etc.. In sales, it's all about the relationships, established credible relationships.. and finding good people is not as easy as it appears to be.. "Youthinkyouknowradio".. seems like you don't care for some of the sales staff there, and Johnny_45 ? Whew.. From reading your stuff, sounds like you won't hired for doing any PR for Pamal anytime soon. Why the nasty ?

Your Kidding, Right! His claim to fame is that he brought "Howard To Albany!" This is the same guy that tried to cover up the Walt Adams DWI Scandel. The only reason he was appointed the job to begin with is because he was cheap and we all know when it comes to screwing talent to save a buck there is nobody better than the crew at Johnson Rd! This guy is so top notch that he couldn't figure out how to check his own e-mail! I'm not making any of this up just ask anyone who is there or was there when he came in as a sales guy on a favor from his buddy Jimmy Morel. When the former GM left to run the statioins across town his name wasn't even on the radar in fact the rumor was he was still selling Ice Cream from his little stand in Albany and had been chased out of radio following his WABY debacle. As far as the Sales Manager goes, Hunt was lucky to have him there, if he would have left when he had the chance to, that house of cards would have fallen a long time ago. Mikie Morgan is the only reason 89 Everts Avenue didn't implode! Mike can be tough and even pig headed from time to time but HE KNOWS RADIO and in my book thats all that matters! That group of stations is a complete mess they still go off the air every time the wind blows and I don't know about you but when I want the weather I want it for Today and the rest of the week not yesterday ! Update the dam weathers will ya!

WOW...put the gloves on first. Lets be honest folks...Pamal is known for putting guys and gals in charge that should have been done with radio a long time ago. I would first like to say that from what i've heard the new GM seems like a nice guy. I guess he has lots of experience in fixing beat up stations. The other person I would like to discuss is BIG MIKE Patrick, He has made many improvements with Froggy and wants to make it better. I think the problem is he is afraid to rock the boat if you know what I mean, but I do think he wants to go in the right direction. In my opinion the real problems in GF is the SUPER sales staff. I DO know radio and I DO know how important it is to make and keep a relationship with an advertiser. The way I see it is no matter how good of a relationship is, you have nothing without TRUST. Almost non of the sales staff in GF are trustworthy. Don't think the advertisers don't know that. They deserve some credit. I also want to say... for someone to say "finding good people is not as easy as it appears to be.." is just making excuses. A little hard work and dedication does pay off. I hope the new GM turns that way of thinking around, and I think he will. I also think that they have a lot of bad seeds in the GF offices, and until you throw out the bads seeds and plant some new ones it will always be the same. As i've said before "you can't continue to do the same things day after day and expect new results".

Not a question about gloves.. "YTYNR" and "Smashworth" came out with some pretty bogus stuff, and we called you on the carpet with it..

"finding good people is not as easy as it appears to be.." is just making excuses... I said that, and stand behind that statement.. Not an excuse, just reality.. Now I know you have no clue to what you are talking about in regards to the business and sales end of radio..

"Almost non of the sales staff in GF are trustworthy.".. Again, Now I know you have no clue to what you are talking about in regards to the business and sales end of radio..

Please spew your non credible claims elsewhere..

you are so right...I have NO experience working with a sales staff with a chip on their shoulder's. I think a good sales staff is a staff that knows enough to package the stations in a presentation. Anyone knows that if you have a station that people are buying (FROGGY) and you have a station that people are not (THE POINT) you put together a two station package. Let the client sample the station and show them that it works. The chip seems to get in the way everytime. In my opinion it all starts with passion for the product... after that building a relationship and building trust with the advertisers is key. Everyone on the staff needs to have passion and dedication to make it work. A little hard work never hurt anyone, you have to want it. If that... is no idea what i'm talking about, now wonder the GF building is a nightmare.

You make some interesting points.. So many times, programming people have the answer for sales and vice versa.. Though the latter can get very testy, when the product is encroached on by bright eyed sales people with no concept of programming elements.. We get that. Sales people need to be totally psyched up and have a high degree of passion for the their stations. We get that also.. Selling the 'cluster' can be a challenge if everyone can sell all the stations in a company's portfolio.. Sales people will take the easier path to the sale, it's human nature. If somebody wants to buy a Malibu, would you demand they buy a Tahoe instead ?

I don't think the GF Building is a nightmare as you describe it to be.. Do you work there ? I bet not, sight unseen.

I don't work there but I know people who do...It has been a nightmare for a long time. I hope the new GM can turn it around before its too late.

My problem with radio today is that it has become lazy. The easy path is not always as rewarding as the hard one. If my customer wanted to buy a malibu but a Tahoe was a better fit for their needs...I would give them an educated, thought out reason why the Tahoe would better fit them. Lets not forget when you first talk with a new buyer it is the sales persons job to find out as much information as possible about the buyer. They tell you what best fits their needs. They may think it's a Malibu but it may be the Tahoe. As sales people they are consultants...consult the customer. If you do this correctly...the customer will end up happy in the end. Knowledge is power...learn as much as you can about the buyer. Getting caught up in the the company's entire portfolio will just delay individual success. Create success by concentrating on what is in front of you. If you do this most likley you will be successful and selling the other stations in the company's portfolio won't matter.

You make some very good points.. Though the harsh economic realities right now is that if someone wants to buy a Malibu, the chances are slim that you may be able to upsell into a Tahoe.. You don't know unless you ask..

I suggest you call or forward your resume to the GM there.. Perhaps they can use your help, and be part of a solution and not a problem... Go get em' !! :D
