The Point reacts to Jack

When Lite switched to Jack, Star was the only station that reacted. Star immediatley added deeper 80s cuts and some "I-Pod on shuffle" type of sweepers.

Although I haven't noticed any music changes, The Point has recently added some new sweepers in response to Jack. The new liners emphasize variety and randomness. One of the new sweepers says something like "97_1 the Point where you never know what song will be played next". Another sweeper compares the randomness of the Point to throwing darts to a dart board and not knowing where it will land. There is even a sweeper that compares the Point to an I-Pod.

How effective do you think this new positioning will be for KXPT against KKJJ? Personally, I like about 85% of the songs the Point plays (although I am burned on a lot of them), but am never and I mean NEVER surprised at anything they play. It's the same library of well tested songs they have been playing for a decade. The type of songs that were huge as currents and have always been heard on the radio ever since. The Point truly does play "Classic Hits" but never gives me any kind of "Oh Wow" sensation like Jack often does. One of the sweepers the Point still uses says it best "Imagine a radio station where you know every song that is played".

isn't the classic hits format a thing of the past?? There are few around now...the point needs to have a more creative format..

I wouldn't say thing of the past. Some of the classic hits stations dong well right now in 2005 include WROR/Boston,WXGL/Tampa,WKLH/Milwaukee,WKLU/Indianapols,WJGL/Jacksonville,WSFR/Louisville,KHYT/Tucson, and KJSR/Tulsa.

As for the Point, they were doing fine until Jack came on. Maybe they will rebound if the novelty of Jack wears off. In the meantime there is a lot of fragmentation in the classic hits/classic rock/80s arena.
