The Power of Radio!

My sincere thanks to Ace and TJ, staff and management of WNKS KISS 95.1, Charlotte. This Infinity station has experienced some rough times in this market lately. They have come together with their fund raiser called "Give to the Gulf" and have received outstanding support from the Charlotte community and all over the Piedmont including their affiliates in other states. Food, water, batteries, generators and other needed supplies have come in by numerous proportions to aid the relief effort from Hurricane Katrina.

Clear Channel.....they could tear down their wall of "greed" and lend a hand. Hmmmmmm, imagine the competition working with another radio company for a cause. Instead they rip up signs which were placed along the road to guide listeners to KISS on Stuart Andrew Blvd. where supplies are being taken! Shame on you! Class act? Definitely not.

Let's set the record. Is it all about the ratings? No.....definitely not. But as you well know that will take its course naturally. This is a fine example of what radio is and should be. You can't get that on XM or Sirrius. You can't raise awareness, money or supplies from the Ipod either.

To all the programmers in the market and around the country. It's a no- brainer. Give to your community, be local. Voice tracking, automation and the computer doesn't even come into play here.

It's all because of the efforts of a great radio team, people like the staff at KISS 95.1 who have a passion about real radio and the power and impact it has on a community. And most importantly, the listeners who care and support the cause.

God Bless.

We're running a raft of PSA's directing people to orgs that are giving relief.

In olden times, the competing station not only would hop on the giving bandwagon, they would give to the other station. Mix 104.7 did some big relief drive - maybe after Hugo? Or started to, when Magic 96 pulled up with semi trucks full of goods.

We do live in changing times. Where a corporation would readily hurt this country by outsourcing jobs to another country, do you think they could care less about helping a competing business, even if it would help America?
Only if it is in their OWN interests!!!

I have friends at both Infinity and Clear Channel. I don't think any of them would pull a stunt like ripping up signs. The ones that did probably just got caught up in the competition part of the biz. Not nice but I can understand that. Sometimes it takes awhile to put differneces aside. We hear about hurrican damage all the time. It has taken me awhile to grasp the seriousness of what has happened to people in the Gulf.

I think we all live for those times when we can make a difference in radio there is no greater thrill than connecting with the audience in public service. I'm sure the folks at Clear Channel will come around once they realize how bad the situation is.

To the folks at Kiss....Well done!

Mike

Will Eisner wrote a graphic novel called "Stranger From Another Planet" about a corporation that put together a plan to contact life on another planet and claim the planet for themselves. They were subjected to a congressional hearing and accused of usurping government authority. Their reply was that they were a "global" corporation and had to think of global interests, America was not their concern nor their rulemaker.

You can't expect class from CC. If I am not mistaken some of the promotions staff for WNKS are EX-CC employees. Very good people. Not that CC doesn't have good people its just hard to be creative when you have to stay in the box.

Your heart is in the right place Kiss!!

CC is working with Entercom in NO, even lending their BR studio to produce information prograaming for New Orleans. If the same thing happened here, I can see similar results coalesing around WBT. After all, the big stick down there is WWL.<P ID="signature">______________
