Would anyone like to see a 'Power Pig' kind of a thing happen again? Like how WFLZ took on WRBQ back in the day? Maybe a good fued between 933FLZ and Wild 98.7.

Wild would kill 93. The Wild fans are very devoted to their station. Q (ueer) 105 had a laissez-faire following.

As much as I would LOVE to see something that happen, it's just impossible. There were SO MANY pieces of the puzzle that just fell together for the Power Pig it was amazing. They had the most dedicated and talented staff willing to take a HUGE chance. I don't think you can find a staff like that in today's radio. Plus, one HUGE factor that they wouldn't would be Randy Michaels. it was HE who made the Power Pig happen to the extreme it did.

(And for those interested, I know I've been saying The Power Pig site will be back up and running and it will, I promise. I have a new host for it I just have to get it back up but have found little time to dedicate to it since I'm also running my own station here in Grand Rapids).
______________

Brain, do you have a web site for 104.5 WSNX Grand Rapids? I liked to check that out.

But you are right, it probably would never happen again. But it was great while it did happen, wasnt it? There would never be another like Power 93 again. And, I dont believe WFLZ has the staff or fans to back another 'radio war' such as that. I also agree with Ivan about the Wild 98.7 fans would kill 933FLZ now. But we'll see who knows, it could happen one more time one day.

I'd have to say that Holmes has plenty of I.Q. points, but I don't think calling him "Brain" is going to gain you any.

Here's the website you were looking for: www.wsnx.com

Wow! Who woulda thunk that WSNX would have thought to use their call sign as a dot com?

Sorry, I'm not usually such a jerk... well sometimes I do nice things... occasionally... Like this: www.radio-locator.com

Use that site to find your favorite radio station's info. They even list most stations' websites.

Enjoy!

Another good site for that is http://www.google.com

...don't be afraid, google doesn't bite! (yet)

What does the (ueer) have to do with anything? Is WRBQ programming to the alternative community? I find the use of (BLEEP) as an insult to offensive. Does the fact that the Power Pig beat them imply that WRBQ's management were (BLEEP)? Do you know the sexual orientations of both stations staff at that time to make that assertion?

It has nothing to do with sexuality... please. It is a way a then 15 year-old insults others. Lighten up, we are having fun on this board. If someone wants to criticize someone for what their gender, race, or religion, I'll be there to defend them.

Q105 had good people working for them. We are talking of the on air product. If you really want to push me I can prove it was a racist format. I can talk about the DO NOT playlist and why.

I dont quite know what I.Q. points have to do with anything we are discussion but umm okay. Thanks for the URL to the station's web site.

Did Orlando produce a rap song that dissed 933 some years ago???

Yeah but I think that was back during when Big Mama was still with WLLD and they had the whole war with 'Extreme Show w/ Kane' on WFLZ. It was pretty funny I remember it.

I wasn't in Tampa then and possibly WRBQ did not relate to their demographic. As a former adult mentor in the Pinellas County School GSA's, I know how that word hurts even uttered by 15 year olds. Otherwise, you may be right.

OldiesGal, the Q(ueer) reference was actually an old Power Pig sweeper that went: "Q is the first letter in the word (BLEEP). Don't be a Q. Make the switch now to Power 93, The Power Pig".

I wish like hell my Pig website was functioning so I could direct you to the actual audio but it's still a few weeks away.
______________

The Power Pig thing proves that when there's competition, the listener wins. That's because both stations are forced to stay on their toes. And in the case of The Power Pig, the worse things got for Q105, the more fun The Power Pig became!

It seems that today's radio world is very sterile, with not a lot of risks being taken. There are few markets where two FM stations compete for the same format, especially in Top 40, and that's a shame. On the other hand, with the millions of $'s to be lost, who can blame them?

No, and I don't think the sexual prefrences of the station folk mattered. Q(ueer)was a ballsy (no pun intended) gimmic the Pig used to screw (agian, no pun intended) the Q. Today you might look back and think it was offensive for a station to do that, but at the time these two stations were locked in WAR, and in a radio war you use what you have, and the Pig's case it was their mouth and ability to imply the competition as being related to a less than popular lifestyle...

Those were the day, it would be great stations could do that today! But sadly corporate america ownership, among others would make a ratings war a courtroom battle....

BTW, if Holmes is out there "When is PowerPig.com going to be back up?!"

I can't think of a market anywhere in 2006 with the dynamics to match the situation that existed in Tampa in 1990. It wasn't just two CHRs fighting each other. What people forget (or never knew) was that Q105 was THE most conservative CHR in America. They were very close to being a HOT AC. They played gold like the Eagles "Best of my Love". They skipped out on just about anything urban. They refused to play any rap. So many songs that were huge hits everywhere else were not played on Q105, "Bust a Move" and "Buffalo Stance" were two songs I remember Q skipped out on in 1989.

Q105 was in double digits 12+ and had the best adult female numbers any CHR could ask for, so in a sense you can understand why they didn't want to rock the boat. But they were SO VULNERABLE on the younger end. POWER PIG came on and totally exploited that weakness.

Today, there are no #1 rated, double digit, ultra conservative CHRs out there just waiting to be attacked by an aggressive competitor. I suppose the only possible exception is WNCI/Columbus Ohio. But even they aren't as conservative and adult as Q105 was in the late 80s, plus Columbus does have an FM urban.
