The Programming Disputes Thread

https://tvanswerman.com/2020/09/01/scripps-blasts-dish-as-dishonest-in-fee-fight/

Scripps in a dispute with Dish Network.

Scripps says Dish is not being honest in their carriage dispute, and further alleges the satcaster is not motivated to settle because it’s making a profit from the blackout.

Dish has been without Scripps’ 60 local network affiliates in 42 markets since July 25 when the two companies could not agree on a new carriage pact. The satellite service claims that Scripps is asking for excessive fees to carry its signals, a 250 percent increase over the previous rate.

But in a new statement released yesterday, Scripps says Dish is not agreeing to a new deal because it does not have to pay the broadcaster during the blackout.

”Dish isn’t being honest with its customers,” says the statement, which was posted at Scripps’ web sites. “Scripps has not asked for a 250 percent hike. What is true is that Dish has little motivation to seek a deal: Dish’s profitability improves by several million dollars each month by not distributing Scripps stations all across the country. While this battle grows profits for Dish, its customers – who are locked into Dish’s monthly charges for stations they’re not receiving – miss out on the news, weather and sports programming they rely on.”

AT&T Complaint Against Sinclair-tied TV Owners Affirmed

FCC-new-logo-post-portals-2020-150x120.jpg
The FCC announced late Tuesday that it has affirmed a Media Bureau finding that 18 stations owned by eight broadcast TV station ownership groups failed to negotiate for retransmission consent in good faith. As such, the Commission has proposed a forfeiture of $512,228 — against each station.

I turned my TV on for the first time in several months to watch the debate between Trump and Biden. I was on Fox (KCYU) for the debate and they had a scroll at the bottom a couple times saying Dish would drop KCYU very soon.
HERE WE GO AGAIN.....When does it end!

Leave Dish if you are tired of being cut off. Damn Dish is always getting into Disputes all the time and their spokesperson always have an excuse to make when disputes happen.

Hey don't worry. I don't have Dish up here, we're on Spectrum. But that's the second time in a year or so that they are going off Dish...

https://tvanswerman.com/2020/10/09/dish-cox-media-sign-new-7-day-carriage-deal/

Dish and Cox Media, which is owned by Apollo Global Management, have agreed to a second seven-day temporary agreement, ensuring that 18 Cox-managed local stations stay in the satcaster’s lineup for now.

The two companies agreed to a seven-day truce on October 1 when the old carriage pact was set to expire. That set the stage for a new showdown last night, but the stations last night alerted Dish subscribers that the deadline had been moved to October 15.

“ATTENTION DISH CUSTOMERS: After 7PM EST October 15th, you may not be able to watch your favorite shows live,” reads the notice at KIEM-TV, a NBC affiliate in Eureka, California. “NBC 3 and Redwood CBS are committed to continue our negotiations with DISH to keep your shows on, but DON’T WAIT: Call DISH at 800-333-3474 and tell them you want NBC 3 and Redwood CBS to remain on the air.”

Interesting though that they have a temporary deal.

AT&T is addressing issues over a contract dispute with Amazon and Roku over releasing the HBO Streaming app.

AT&T is nearly five months out from the launch of HBO Max and the service still doesn’t have distribution agreements in place with Amazon or Roku.

CEO John Stankey, speaking today at the WSJ Tech Live event, said the impasses demonstrate how platform companies, not network providers, have begun to hamstring access to apps and services.

“Where the bottlenecks are sometimes occurring are in these commercial agreements,” he said, alluding to his company’s negotiations with Amazon and Apple’s standoff with Epic. “We should ask ourselves, is that friction somebody really feeling their oats and maybe having market power above and beyond what’s reasonable for innovation?”

Stankey said the focus needs to be on equity of rules and engagement to ensure that anybody who wants to innovate has equal access to platforms, which he said have more than 50% of share in many instances.

In the past we talk about traditional cable having contract disputes now that has extended to Internet TV App too.

Hulu to stop carrying Sinclair's regional sports networks.

Hulu has announced that its live TV service will no longer carry the Fox regional sports networks now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, effective Friday.

In a post on its web site Hulu said it will “no longer have the rights” to distribute the channels.

The move comes after the end of the baseball season and follows the networks being dropped Oct. 1 by YouTube TV, another virtual MVPD aimed at sports fans.

Hulu has been running TV spots proclaiming that it has live sports.

“Live TV subscribers will still have access to a wide variety of national and local networks depending on your location — like ESPN, TBS, TNT, FS1, FS2, Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, and more — so you can continue watching your favorite live sports on our service,” Hulu said.

Also Sinclair was restructuring its debt it took from getting the RSN's

Sinclair Broadcast Group’s regional sports unit is reportedly trying to restructure $8 billion in debt, underscoring the pressure on the business after a season in which the coronavirus canceled games and viewers are cutting the cable cord.

Sinclair bought a 90% interest in 21 Fox regional sports networks for $9.6 billion through Diamond Sports Group from the Walt Disney Co. in August 2019. Disney, which owns ESPN, acquired the networks when it bought 21st Century Fox, but had to sell them to satisfy antitrust regulators.

According to The Wall Street Journal, bondholders have hired lawyers and financial advisors to deal with Sinclair’s bankers.

Cable operator WideOpenWest is well aware of the proliferation of streaming video options and it’s actively working to connect its customers with the best fit.

WOW CEO Teresa Elder spoke today at an RBC Capital Markets investor conference and said her company tries to speak with and listen to customers to figure out what kind of content they’re most interested in watching and then match them with appropriate streaming options.

“We’re seeing our customers shift in droves to streaming services,” she said. WOW points its customers toward streaming TV options like YouTube TV, Philo, Sling TV and fuboTV along with its own WOW tv+, an IP-based video service. In July, the company added Chicago, Evansville and Detroit to the list of markets where WOW tv+ is available.

Nexstar has announced that they will be in a dispute with Dish Network on December 2nd.

Note this is from KTLA's website.

Important facts and options you should consider:
What’s going on?

KTLA and DISH have a contract that allows them to carry our programming to you. That contract has expired and DISH removed KTLA from your schedule. KTLA presented a proposal for fair value, based on the importance and value our programming brings to our viewers. Despite our tireless efforts, DISH has refused our fair offer and is making negotiations very difficult. You’ve might have seen them do this before. They will tell you it’s for your benefit, but don’t believe it. Our offer is fair. And now they hold you the subscriber hostage. It’s not right.
