The Programming Disputes Thread

NESN: YouTube TV Doesn't Care About Sports Fans - The TV Answer Man!

Here are the current carriage disputes for this week.

When a majority of the streaming and satellite providers are in a dispute with one company, that company is the one that needs to look in the mirror.

I'm surprised that the various teams that air on the FSN channels haven't put pressure on Sinclair to work out a deal. I would think that only being available to roughly 1/2 the viewers in their market would be a violation of their contract. Of course, these same teams are the ones that left the OTA channels because they thought they could make more money from the RSNs. Plenty of greed all around.

Cox is going to be in a dispute with Directv.

Date: January 28, 2021Author: TV Answer Man 2 Comments

DIRECTV and AT&T TV could lose 14 local stations this Tuesday due to a carriage dispute with Cox Media Group which manages the stations. (The fee fight also affects U-verse in the markets it serves.)

Cox, which is owned by Apollo Global Management, has posted a notice at the stations’ web sites saying the local channels could be removed this Tuesday at 3 a.m. ET.
“Our existing agreement with AT&T/DIRECTV expires after 1:59 a.m. Central time on Tuesday 2/2. If no deal is reached before that date, you will lose live access to shows like, FOX23 News, 911, NASCAR, MLB and more, which you rely on and are paying for,” stated KOKI-TV, the Fox affiliate in Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of the 14 stations.
The TV Answer Man has asked AT&T for a statement and will report back here if we get a response.

NBC's dispute with Amazon over the carriage of the Peacock app goes on for 7 months.

Dish Network is in a dispute with WINK-TV.
Being a locally based OTA TV owner like WINK's Fort Myers Broadcasting is becoming increasingly rare. Retrans disputes have to put small groups and singleton owners at a real disadvantage.

Vimeo App is no longer available on Roku

If the Roku owners click on the link, it would appear that the Vimeo app is indeed no longer available on the streaming device. Roku is listed as one of the “discontinued platforms” for Vimeo, along with second and third generations of the Apple TV and the XBox 360, among others.

Considering that Roku has been engaged in a handful of carriage disputes over the last year, including a current one with Charter for its Spectrum TV app, it was not a reach to wonder if Roku and Vimeo were now fighting over fees.

I go to Vimeo occasionally but it was never a regular app I used on my Roku, so I didn't know it was gone. When I used it, it was usually from the website on my laptop. To some extent it sounds like this may be Vimeo cutting the app back, whether because of disputes or the changes in their service.

Sling TV to lose NBC Sports Local edition in April due to the dispute.

Sling TV has announced it will lose three NBC Sports regional sports networks on April 1 due to a carriage dispute with their owner, NBC Sports.

The live streaming service says NBC Sports Washington, NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area will be removed from its lineup. Sling has carried the three channels since 2017.

“As of 4/12021, NBC Regional Sports Networks will no longer be on SLING. We are committed to providing the best value with the flexibility our customer’s deserve and, unfortunately, we were unable to come to an agreement on those terms,” Sling said in an e-mail to customers.

Dish will lose them too as Dish owns Sling TV and i think they had a 5 year deal with NBCUniversal/Comcast after their 2016 dispute, so they maybe due for a new dispute with NBCUniversal
