The Programming Disputes Thread

December 9th is the shut off date for Roku to get access of the Youtube app.

what the record for the longest dispute between a cable/satellite provider and owners of a local OTA TV station.
Don’t know the answer but example Dish dropped WHIZ Zanesville, OH back July 2019 and it’s still not back. It’s the only station in the zanesville DMA and locally owned.

If Roku and Google don't get their dispute settled soon it could affect Roku's sales and possibly cause more people to buy other brands of streaming devices or TVs during the holiday season. I know I may be looking for another device during holiday sales, and if this isn't settled by then I could go for some other brand since You Tube is the main channel I watch on Roku. I put off buying anything new or even resetting any of my Rokus during the dispute with Spectrum. And if it's like usual in most of these disputes both sides are very likely equally guilty for letting it go this long.

Roku has 99.7% of the blame here. Roku is a platform where anyone can publish an app. Trying to extract money from YouTube for access to that platform is simply rent-seeking.

I hope it does hurt Roku.

The bottom line is this: I bought hardware from Roku. They do not charge me. I pay for YouTube TV every month. I am Google's customer, not Roku's (once I pay for their hardware, that is).

If Google shuts YouTube TV down on Roku, they are the ones that lose my money, not Roku. Both companies are greedy, but Roku has no right to charge a dime to its app providers, any more than the manufacturers of my TVs have the right to charge me to watch OTA channels.

Well Roku is trying to play the same game that Comcast did with YouTube when they were pushing YouTube to carry Peacock and the NBC owned stations in a carriage agreement for YouTube TV. We later find out that Comcast was also hyping up their TV line and streaming devices that was a factor here.

Basically Roku is trying to push their original content deal to their subscribers here.

Suckyvision oh I mean Cablevision was in a dispute with Lin TV owner of Wood TV in 97 for a whole year wasn't until Super Bowl 32 when Wood TV came back on I could only watch Wood TV on rabbit ears. Cablevision & Wood TV had a few spats 93 that was the only local station they didn't get an agreement with until Jan of 94 when the Super Bowl came around in 96 was taken off for a couple of weeks as I think Cablevision found a loophole why it was restored why it took a year for an agreement to be reached in Jan 98.

And it wasn't even about $$$ Lin TV the owner of Wood TV at the time wanted Suckyvision to add the local weather station which is now WXSP which all it was radar and audio of weather radio Wood TV blinked as Cablevision never added the local weather channel wasn't until Charter bought Suckyvision added WXSP 20 years ago in May of 2001. Mediacom and local Fox in SD didn't agree for 2 years wasn't until 2018 when they agreed to a new deal in which Gray took Fox station on a sub in SD in fall of 19.

Roku and Google have a new carriage agreement to have the Google owned app on the device.
