The Q goes to the bird nights

I guess it was a matter of time. Alice Cooper nights on Q106. Musically his show is a little too all-over-the place for its own good for a mainstream classic rocker like the Q. Nassua benefits by saving money, Clear Channel benefits by picking up listeners who I anticipate won't like the show- good news for Champ and Rock 93.9-101.7.

Bets on when Q106 re-images itself to The Hawk? Probably will hinge on the next book...

Hmmm....
Champ has been airing Nights with Alice Cooper for a little while now.
How can "Q"-do that??

Actually Alice Cooper also runs on the Champ.

Q106 would already be The Hawk if Nassau wanted it that way. There were good market tests for the brand "Q106" and they didn't want to mess with it.

Bets off, Q will be Q. BOB's already The Wolf ... logo changes, etc. have been made and are set and done, at least in West Leb.

The simulcast of Champ doesn't have enough primary coverage in the Leb.-Rut.-WRJ market to block Q out. Plus Champ is technically a Burlington station.

Why wouldn't United Stations want their ads also on a signal that reaches a better part of this new market? CC isn't happy, for sure, but I don't expect U.S. to force Q to drop the show ...

Didn't Nassau dump Alice after only a month or so in Portland? Odd that they would pick up this show for the Q. I can't see it's saving them much money...it's not like Q had a live jock on at night anyway.

That's a funny thing to say, considering the "hot" format of today is to play "anything we feel like!" The old i-93 was Alice Cooper's first affiliate. Frankly, it was a tiny breath of fresh air from the usual 500 song "safe" list.

In my opinon, running Alice makes perfect sense:

1) Having a real classic rock star relating first-hand anecdotes about the music he helped create beats some tired voice-tracked jock spewing positioning statements.

2) Most of classic rock's core demo is watching TV between 7-mid anyway. Why not give them a reason to tune in, rather than more of the same stuff you hear in every other daypart.

They might as well put a bullet in the Classic Rock format. Corporate radio has neutered Rock-n-roll. They have taken music that once had great meaning and beat it to a lifeless pulp. Still nothing makes the suits more nervous than deviating from the formula. They act like Earth will spin off it's axis if you play a deep cut once in a while.

I'd say that calling Alice a "real classic rock radio star" a bit of a stretch. Yeah, he had a handful of hits in the early 70s, but his chart run was fairly short...only a couple of years. It's a lame show.

Because that's why most people tune in to a particular station...they like that "same stuff". Give me even one example of a station that added so-called "deep cuts" where it didn't become a tune-out factor. Your "oh wow" song is my "wtf?" song. Listeners won't sit thru obscure tunes like they once did. Maybe you can get away with it in Podunk, but not in any market with competition.

Ever been to a concert by a "heritage" artist? Pretty much a "greatest hits" show...I'm sure the Eagles (for example) are pretty sick of "Hotel California" by now, but they know that's what their audience came to hear, not some deep cut off their first album.

Another clueless radio wannabee. IMHO anyone who blames everything on "the suits" has no credibility. Corporate radio didn't neuter rock & roll, it just ran it's course and became increasingly irrelevant. Maybe it's your favorite genre of music, but it's not the slam-dunk to reach 18-24 men it used to be. Times & tastes change. That 25 year old stoner who'd light up a "j" every time he played "Freebird" is now a bank VP with a wife, family and a mortgage.

Not sure what music you're referring to that "once had great meaning", but I can think of plenty of "lifeless pulp" from AOR's heyday too (including much of Mr. Cooper's repertoire).

Then the Q is stupid because Champ has an Upper Valley translator that they use to increase their coverage in that part of the world (listen to Corm and Coach give the Lebanon temp in the morning) plus the WCVR signal comes into many parts of Q106's primary coverage area to the North. Not sure why either Champ or Q wouldn't raise a stink about the other guy having it....I would. For that matter....why would Q want the same programming as Champ when it's heard in so much of their coverage area. Bad move. Just keep boxing it.

He was off for about a week & a half, don't know what that was about.I used to listen to the Bone at work but Alice talks too much.I like the Bone because it's the hardest rock in the area since we lost 'TOS.'BLM is what I listen to at work now because they play more music.I'd rather listen to Bone music but it's just not there from 7 to midnight. The Bone is always bashing 'BLM,here's one for them Mungo Jerry "In the Summertime",part of the reason my preference isn't 'BLM.

Just a couple of thoughts...first, "then the Q is stupid..."???? This thought negates anything wise and educated that might follow it. The Q is stupid? The energy, data, and sound waves that are transmitted now have a level of logic? Further, if the schollar meant to say that "The programmers of the Q are stupid.." This is also flawed. Incorrect maybe, in error perhaps, or maybe he just has to make the point to disagree...but the argument that they are STUPID? This one should be taken to the kick-ball field.

ok, enough with the english lesson...There are many markets where there is bleed over from station to station, where there is some sort of syndication. Think of RUSH...there was a long time that the Rutland station and Leb station were both within range. Burlington and Lebanon are on different plantes, as far as local-direct sales go. If the Q has good overall numbers, with loyal listeners and advertisers, they can only gain from the presence of the same show out of B-town...The sales staff can use and manipulate the numbers of the overall program to reach listeners in the sales presentation. They can marry the two, as far as an overall cume turning to the program.

I would argue that stupid would be the polar to what Heath and NB were thinking. H doens't fail to take into account the big picture.

Also, as I am sure you know, given your obvious gift of thought, there are blackout areas and things called "market exclusive" Outside that market, US can sell their programs to anyone they want. Although I would not put it above CC to attempt to bully US around, they really have no control. I am sure that the contract with US is Burlington-Metro, not "anywhere the dang signal can be heard." For US to enter into a contract like that would be "stupid."

Sorry, was that too out of the box thinking???

Just keepin an eye on the radio.

The Chump does more than bleed into the UV. They put Chump on WCVR to develope a UV presence. They're A/E's are on the street there and Crumb sends his morning stunt dude there occasionally. If they are sharing any content syndicated or otherwise, that is "stupid". You have to assume someone somewhere has raised the issue. If corn or Heap haven't, then they are simply dropping the ball and not doing their jobs. Here's a novel idea, why don't both stations drop the pre-produced, non-interactive syndicated crap that is the Alice Cooper show and put a live jock on?!!!! If you really care about your audience show them. Give them a reason to turn the station on at night! Alice Cooper doesn't do that. $hapiro did his best to try and run Q-106 into the ground and it seems as though Nassau is picking up where he left off. There is nothing going on with that station. It has flatlined! It has no identity. It's jocks have all spent time on the other in mkt NB stations, so there's no chance for listeners to have any sort of connection with them. Check out their website. Is it being updated by a 10 year old? The content is mostly way out of date, there's errors all over the place. Who exactly IS running the ship there? That's a 50,000 signal that on a good day can hit Ticonderoga NY for God's sake and it's being totally wasted. And please, don't try and make the ratings argument, because Q-106 still finished what, 5th in mkt #180. That sucks! Granted $hapiro left Q-106 in horrible shape when it was sold, but Nassau really needs to do something with the station, it's going to waste in it's current state. Sorry to have nothing positive to say, but it really is sad. Hey, maybe Q-106 has a format flip coming..........

Like it or not, Q106 has NO format flip coming.

Q's imaging, music, and jocks have all been tightened up. They have more live shifts than when Shapiro was running the place.

And guess what? Now without Shapiro and his former GMs and all their golf trade and extremely low rates, they're billing MORE than before. Hard to believe, huh, even with inventory not full?

No format flip, no name change. Stop grasping at straws that don't exist.

And, btw, Nassau is a corporate entity. Changes like adding Alice Cooper come from the TOP (read: Michelle Stevens in Princeton's corporate office).

??? Did I miss something the other nite on 106?

In this summer heat, has the "A.C." been turned off at night on the "Q"?

I'll have to tune in again and hear(or not hear)to be sure!

From what I understand, Alice has left the building. CC complained and won. So what will Nassau replace him with? I think John Tesh would be a good fit these days. He's pretty sleepy.
