The "Q" monument

Re-read the names the other day. And one on-air personality that wasn't listed is Lonnie Maserati. She was the 'winner' in a contest where a number of aspiring jocks would have an on-air audition for an hour or so,and the best one would land their own show, which she did. (word is, it was rigged) Whatever happened to her?

Believe me, actual big time jocks who worked full time at KCBQ were missing as well as news-casters, Shotgun simply made sure his buddies made the list, even if they were nothing more than weekend button pushers.

What a ridiculous thing to say. This monument would not exist if not for Shotgun. It was his baby. He convinced the property owners and the local authorities of the importance of such a dedication. Not one other radio station in the country has been honored in this fashion. He paid much more than anyone else to see it come to pass. He reached out to as many former Q personalities as possible and had many others reach out on his behalf. Those whose names are featured but couldn't afford to contribute, or have passed on, he covered out of his own pocket. Many including myself contributed to this project monetarily, but no one worked harder or gave more to see this legendary station memorialized.

As one of the committee members on the monument building, and one who worked with Shotgun Tom, Linda, Neil Ross, Jack Vincent, and others -- Shotgun looked high and low for KCBQ alumni. It was unfortunate that some were missed. We knew this going in, but no one were included because of being buddies or FOT. No politics were played. The radio jocks were included because they worked at KCBQ. They were (and are) part of a legendary radio station in a town that the mention of the call letters gives sparkle to former listeners and those who worked there. The station is a shell of what is was; but last year several thousand top-forty fans (Santee sherriff's estimate) filled the Kohl's parking lot with "I Q in my car", radio surveys, and RECORDS!

This is was dream, really drawn on a napkin, that took shape in about nine months. We raised over $13,000 and with the grateful help of the City of Santee, we found a swath of land to place the monument on public property.

Yea, whatever, it's the truth. Some author wrote a book with all the lineups years before Shotgun started
his monument activity, how many geniuses does it take to refer to the book?. I got not horse in the race,
but don't insult me with your weak retorts. Shotgun is a radio buff or fan, who happened to make it on
a little talent, and mostly a lot of charisma, chutzpah, & ego. He would fall in the middle of the talent
who has passed through this town. He knows it, does he sound good on KRTH? Yes. Is he of the same
ilk as Humble Harve, Steele, Morgan, or MG Kelly? Sorry, he's not in that league. That said, he's a good
guy, but not the end all and be all like some of you who seem to worship him believe. Truth.

I was gonna make a comment...but on second thought, this quote speaks for itself.
unbelieveable nonsense.

UHH I am going to comment. Shotgun Tom Kelly is the greatest radio personality that this city has ever seen! PERIOD. Humble Harve sounds like a drunk high old hippie. Shotgun sounds as good if not better today than he did on Boss Radio 136KGB! Shotgun Tom would NEVER EVER intentionally leave someone out if they were worthy of being considered a KCBQ legend.

And as for his friends, Tom and Linda open their home (just about) every weekend to just about any radio person that has been in SD. He gives broadcasters old and young a place to congregate and talk about the love of their life...Radio!

There is NO ONE, NO ONE that has done more for making radio a household word in San Diego than Shotgun Tom Kelly. He is a role model for anyone that has ever been in radio or wanted to be in radio. If you really feel this way about Tom then you need to tell him to his face, and not hide behind a BS fake name on radio-info. I have felt very privileged to be invited to be a regular with Tom and Linda, and get to talk to my radio hero! When Tom walks into any place in SD EVERYONE knows who he is, do they know you or anyone else in radio today?? NO! Shotgun Tom is San Diego's true radio legend!

KOGO Boy- , well I worked NYC, Cincy, Miami, & Detroit. What do I know.? First of all you made
my point. He is a warm, gregarious, generally nice man. But that doesn't make him one of the
great air personalities of all time. Actually a lot of the most talented jox can be awful people, not always
but sometimes. You are way too childish and emotional about this. If you actually read what
I said, it was complimentary.

Wow, where is this all going? Clarence the custodian would have been better than Lonnie! Her NOT being on the plaque left more room for the des-
erving others. Shotgun has paid his dues-an unpaid intern at XEGM, Bobby Oscar Johnson at KPRI; Bakersfield-Port Hueneme-Phoenix, etc.
And Humble Harve- didn't he murder his wife?

Yes, but he was humble about it and didn't brag.

To Reeljox………….I read these various radio opinion websites from all of the country because it is my duty being in the business to do so, but I’ve never posted because I feel most of the comments are made by geeks, dorks and trekkie types that don’t know what they are talking about………so I just stay out of the way.

However I can not as a human being hold back any longer…………You say Shotgun to quote “has little talent”. You may or may not like his style THAT IS FINE to feel that way but to say “little talent” is just not true the results show he does, he’s won numerous awards. Billboard Magazine “jock of the year”, Emmy awards as well as too many to go into here. His career needs no defending. But for you to spew such vile hatred and to do so anonymously is the height of being a coward and in my opinion makes you despicable and you should be called out for it. But I will not call you out anonymously my name is Todd Williams I can be reached anytime at 619 497-0600 ext 325. Call me please so I can tell you voice to voice. Who knows……..we might even know each other. If you really feel the things you said…………then the call won’t be hard……….will it?

Tom’s efforts regarding the monument and are beyond reproach………….”always haters out there”

Oh; you (reeljox)……….I know you are saying “who am I to write this to you?”……….Well I have over 35 years in the business…..which I feel sheepish about having to justify that to you. I’ve known Tom since I was 17 years old and know him as one of the biggest hearted persons one could come across. Do I need to go into all the “down and out” folks Tom and Linda have brought into their home over the years as well as all the other random acts kindness that very few know about…………Not to mention all his public charity work (MDA etc)?

This will be my first of only 2 posts ever, the 2nd will be to let the readers here know if you had the courage to come out of your dark hole and call me.
Readers: I’ll let you know.

Again you can have your opinion and not like someone’s style but to say “little talent” when the facts just are there and to do so anonymously is deplorable and you need to be told so. You have the right to be hater………….but not anonymously……

I noticed most of your posts have been taken down since I began to write this last Friday……….Thanks to the board editors.

I didn't get to work for that long with Shots at KBest 95, but I loved every minute of it and his enthusiasm toward life in general. Shots is a great talent, but more importantly, he's a great human being.

I worked briefly with Tom at KOGO and found him to be a genuinely nice guy.

I do listen to him once in a while on KRTH and did so again today just because of this thread. I had the privilege to work with Bobby Ocean, Nick Morale and some other pretty good Top 40 jocks at KHJ and KRLA. Shotgun rates with the best: keep in mind mind that PM drive top 40 jocks were generally not jokesters or prone to clever quips - but they were high-energy and had a way of providing an uplifting experience for listeners who were fighting traffic and other woes after a hard day at work.

Shotgun Tom is a master at maintaining that high-energy delivery while coming across with a friendly, warm personality. Today, especially, there are only a few people who can do that kind of Top 40 delivery without sounding like parodies. Oldies radio in San Diego, as with most places now, merely has announcers who sometimes seem to present the music as museum artifacts, but Shotgun is an entertainer who reminds us that the success of the great Top 40 stations owed as much to personalities as it did to music.
