The Question of the Year

Who will replace Howard Stern on KISW?
Another top finish for Howard in Seattle in all key
male demos. The story of 2006 will be what happens
to Stern's audience and what will KISW do. Like him
or hate him Stern is number one mornings in Seattle.

I think you are correct.I believe this is his first #1 25-54 win in Seattle.Too bad for KISW they can't sell these numbers as he won't be there. Its funny that Rivers, Ich, etc. held him off of a win until it was last call for him to get one. Will he be taking that 7 share to Sirrius with him? Will it go to ????? Should be interesting.

KISW can (and should) replace him with a local morning team. I'm hearing David Lee Roth may replace Stern on Infinity. I guess because David Lee Roth surrounds himself with strippers and has a monster ego too. Or Adam Carolla (unlike David Lee Roth, he looks pretty busy these days.)

Howard indicated that six or eight regional hosts were rumored to replace him, with them fighting it out as to who will win. He asked why Infinity just does not go out and say it. David Lee Roth and Adam Carrola were two of them. Carrola was on David Letterman, and avoided consistently Dave's probes on the subject. Carrola did state that he would jump at the opportunity, but that's it.

> Who will replace Howard Stern on KISW?

The question I have never understood (and I admit up front I don't listen to either station to the answer may be extremely obvious to faithful listeners or management) is why doesn't KISW get strong national morning talent .. local midday ... move Leykis over there in afternoon ... and music-intensive evenings and weekends. Seems like with that it would be a strong GUY station for sales, would put strong shows in drive slots, and keep a music focus strong enough for the station to retain its active rock identity.

Also frees up the 100.7 frequency to do something more consistent and strategically relevant?? Obviously an Entercom country is one choice; but I'd sure look long and hard at the KIRO newsroom asset in the same building and see if there could be something more relevant in that regard.

#1 - NEVER TALK ABOUT A STATION unless you take the time to listen to that station, listen to the stations competition, evaluate their promotions/web Presence, and learn about the demo that they are trying to reach
#2 - You don't consider Howard Stern strong national talent? Are you insane? He was #1 in Seattle by the way...
#3 - Their midday Jock is local, his name is Ryan Castle and he has turned in solid numbers during tough times. He is also the assistant PD.
#4 - move Lekis to afternoons!!! AGAIN LISTEN TO THE STATION! KISW fired Ricker a few months back and recently brought him back. Prior to his firing Ricker turned in some serious numbers that launched KISW into the 4 shares. He was just re-hired a few weeks ago and it was Not only huge news to the Seattle market, but big news to anyone that follows Rock radio in the entire nation.
#5 - Music instensive evenings?? Is KISW ever Not music intensive aside from Stern? What are you talking about? What do you mean by Music Intensive evenings? They currently have a female Jock doing evening that has been a huge hit with men.

What is this "seems to me" business. I thought you had learned your listen from your last post. Basically, if someone wanted to reach men in Seattle about their product through radio, KISW is sure bet to get the word out.

The real question is why did I even take the time to respond to this!

My questions were raised with regard to POST-STERN possibilities (djdan's thread topic)....I honestly didn't mean to waste your valuable time --- and I thought I had posed the questions with the explicit disclaimer that I wasn't as familiar with the product as I should be. I was hoping someone would offer educated insight to set my questions straight about "why not make a powerhouse station with KISW and another one with KQBZ" and I appreciate that you took the time to do so.

I also appreciate, with sincere humility, the fact that I blew YOUR rules about what I could pose as a question and what I could not. Yeah...I sure learned a lot about posing any "why wouldn't someone..." discussion starter from your last admonishment. After all, your points about what to look for in the competitive landscape seem to be working in kick-ass speed over at 92.5 and I should, above all else, take notice about programming stations from that incredible track record.

Oops...now I wasted MY time. Back to my "girls gone wild" marathon weekend.

If I were the people in charge at Entercom, I would shift Robin and Maynard to KISW...Then bring in Mancow on KQBZ...Even if it's on tape delay, Mancow is 10 times better than R&M...If Diamond Dave or Adam get put on mornings in Seatte, people will have to be ready for more suicides...cause like JACK, It's going to blow...

Six months ago or so I suggested that Mancow might replace Stern on KISW, and iknowitall would take credit for the prediction! Considering that 99.9 has stronger overall ratings than 100.7, I would not want to do anything to harm what KISW has established. Stern's departure will have enough of an impact as it is. As for Robin and Maynard and their miserable carcases, get rid of them and pay them until their contracts run out. They aren't doing the Buzz any favors by taking up space, particularly during morning drive.

Mancow could certainly replace them; at this point, most anyone could replace them. A possibility - Mancow to the Buzz, and Andy Savage to 99.9? Savage could get ratings again if he were able to create an original show and not rehash the same material from his End and K-Rock days. I think he could have someone like Bill Reid added to the mix in the mornings. Savage's show was always more interesting when characters other than he, Steve, and Jodi were involved (i.e. the WWF/WWE report.) Just a thought ... and it might bring Danadeeeeeeeeeeeeee back to the board.

He would have to stop rehashing really old material from his Minnesota days, too.

I remember back in the late 90s, a friend (from out of town) sent me a funny radio .mp3, where a DJ was trying to find out if a caller's spouse was cheating by calling the spouse and telling the spouse that they had won free flowers to be delivered to their "love." The spouse gave his girlfriend's address - not his wife's. This was a bit from the station in Minnesota he worked at before he came to the end. At the time - i thought it was amusing my friend sent me this, because Andy was fairly new to Seattle radio.

Well - towards the end of his KRock stint, I heard him do this stunt on the air. I never heard him do it on the end... So - he's just recycling material.

I used to really like Savage. I don't any more... too stale.

Friggin' losers.

WOW. That seemed acidic (defensive?) and completely out of line.
I found his idea thought provoking.

I thought savage was under contract with Infinity still even though he was cooling his heels? Seems to me the easy choice for KISW is to go with whatever heir apparent Stern has on the West Coast if that is Carolla then that is who they run with until they get a feel for the impact of losing Stern, face it you are talking about Entercom here.

As for KQBZ they should settle with Robin and send that duo packing. Allow BJ Shea to bring back Brad as an extra hand and move BJ's show to mornings. BJ, Double R, Topshelf, and Brad could make an entertaining morning show left to their own devices. BJ has already proved he can pull in good numbers afternoons, and the advertisers love the guy, just makes good sense.

Plus you have either the Men's Room or Vocal Minority shows to act as the midday buffer between BJ & Leykis giving those two shows some distance from people always comparing them.
