THE RATINGS GAME - SUMMER 2006

The Summer 2006 Arbitron ratings (overall) were released for our market this afternoon, and I didn't see any MAJOR surprises with it.

HOT-105 returns as our top station by a nice margin. 99-JAMZ is tied with WLYF as the # 2 English-speaking station in the market. I saw a few recent posts in here where some of you wanted to blow-up the still successful WMXJ (still a TOP 10 station), and get it MOVIN'. MEGA is the new lowest-rated FM station in the market, as 93-ROCK moves up a bit.

I think it is time for management to meet in the conference room with the large table and make some changes....Whadda you think :'(

Mega 949 needs to get flushed ( boy cheap channel does lay some stinkers around here )

on the other hand, 93 rock went from 2.0 to 2.1.

Sour 96 is slowly making it way out of the top ten ive been watching them.

i dont think majic 102.7 changing to this 'movin' format will happen at all. there is a large 50+ crowd in south florida (still) and i'm pretty sure as long as they are around..majic will too.

you should focus a bit more on cellar dwellars mega 94.9; 93 rock; and POSSIBLY 97.3 the coast to become your new 'movin' channels instead of 102.7.

me thinks 97.3 would be an ideal choice since part of their format (particularly their 80's weekends) is closest to movin's demographic.

it would be easiest transition..not only for COX but also the listeners of south fla. and in turn can bring in a nice debut rating...rather than wait a while for south florida to adjust an abrupt change of music. remember when the classical station suddenly went dance? where's that now?

I think that you are so right about the still successful MAJIC staying put indefinitely, as well as 'THE COAST' being the most viable current station to flip over to a 'MOVIN' format. I wouldn't even consider it to be a flip - more like a segue. If they dropped the rock and the ballads, added more dance, and went a bit more current then they would pretty much be there.

I'm a big fan of 1990s European pop-dance music, so depending on how much of that type of content a possible 'MOVIN'-97.3' would include I could very well be a new listener. It would bring back awesome memories of Y-100 circa 1996 to 1999.

1996 to 1999!!!!??? WHAT? You mean to tell me that the time I spent at Y100....May 1988 to August 1996 were less than stellar? Jeeeeeeeeeezus. And here I thought I was actually makin strides to better my craft to where people enjoyed listening. I'm crawlin back into my cubbie hole. ;D

HILARIOUS STUFF ! ;D

On behalf of myself (naturally) I would just like to clarify that music-wise Y-100 really sounded good during the late-1990s. Now if you asked me to list off who all of the deejays were during that time-period then I would have a hard time doing so (other than the final couple of years of Bobby Mitchell, Footy, and the start of the Kenny Walker [in the afternoon] era).

Personality-wise Y-100 could not have been better during the late-1980s into the early-1990s. (My Y-100 history only goes back to the end of 1987.) Strong and memorable deejays and shows ruled back then (Bobby & Footy, Chio, Dunbar, etc.). Everything was LIVE & LOCAL. It sounded like a Miami-Ft. Lauderdale TOP 40 station should have sounded like.

Remember that I actually remember some of the funny bits that you did on-the-air late at night and sometimes even during the 'Bobby & Footy' show ! I just wish that I could have heard some of your earlier 96-X and I-95 comedic material.

Are you still working on that 'Best Of Boy Wonder' compilation tape(s) ? ???

What ever happened to Bill Tanner?

From what i recall
Bill Tanner after Y100 went to Sour 96 in 86' as P.D and morning show host.. then in 91 or 92 some sex scandal involving Tanner and a male minor ( nuff said.. ) erupted allover the news, I remember seeing the story on ch.7. Tanner was subsequently fired and Bo Griffen took over the morning show i believe.
Not sure what happend to Tanner after that i think hes in California now

As you will see, your recollections are incorrect.

Bill Tanner after Y100 went to Sour 96 in 86' as P.D and morning show host.. then in 91 or 92 some sex scandal involving Tanner and a male minor ( nuff said.. ) erupted allover the news,

And was subsequenty dismissed for lack of evidence.

Tanner was subsequently fired and Bo Griffen took over the morning show i believe.

Tanner stayed on as off-air consultant, something he still does today. He hired Bo, in fact. And he was definitely not fired.

Not sure what happend to Tanner after that i think hes in California now

He has homes in LA and Miami today, and is consulting Cox and Beasley in markets like Miami and Birmingham.

In the early 90's, Tanner worked for Russ Oasis and helped with WRMA and WXDJ when they went Spanish. In 1995, Tanner was rehired by Cece Hefter, who had hired him in the early 70's to do 13-Q in Pittsburgh and then WHYI. Tanner took on KLVE where he propelled it to #1 in LA, followed by working on WAMR in Miami, KSCA in LA and other Heftel facilities.

In 2000, he went to SBS as VP of Programming for markets like NY, Miami, Chicago, LA, PR and others. He left SBS last year, and is consulting and travelling.

Well as soon as that scandal hit he was off the air!
im sure if nothing would have come up he would have remained on air... what he did after i didnt know of till now.
i remember the news ppl chasing Tanner in power 96's parking lot looking for comment. The news also had interviews with power 96 staff.

i tried looking online for an article but its too old couldnt find anything

It is pretty much standard for a talent to stay off the air when involved in anytiing controversial until it blows over. In this case, the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence, and Tanner continued on with Power but off the air...

The story "does not come up" because there was not story.

I worked first with Tanner at Metroñplex where I was GM of one station in Miami and Tanner was PD of Y-100. Later, I worked with him at Heftel, and would work with him again as he is, simply, a fine radio person.

... Meanwhile up in the wild West Palm Beach / Boca Raton radio market 97.9-WRMF slips badly, WILD-95.5 holds steady, AMOR is the top Miami-Ft. Lauderdale station, 610-WIOD skyrockets, and 93-ROCK hits a new all-time high (nearly equaling its Miami-Ft. Lauderdale rating).

Arbitron does not include its ratings on its web site. You have to go to a licensed affiliate such as Radio & Records to get the overall 12+ numbers.

Here's the link that I use to check them out:

Go to arbitron.com and from the opening page go to topline ratings for 12+ figures. More complete than the magazines.

I stand corrected. It's obviously been awhile since I've been to Arbitron's official web site. I think I decided to get the ratings from Radio & Records about 3 or 4 years ago when they weren't available at Arbitron, and I've just been going back to R & R each month since then.
