The real Earl Revolution... Phil

Earl will relaunch on Monday with Phil Williams in the Morning. Phil is giving up his afternoon NewsTalk show to return to morning radio.

Former River PD Joe Stutler will also return to the air on Earl Monday. Other airstaff may be announced at a later date.

Well, this is great news! It will be SO GOOD to have Phil Williams back on in the mornings. Finally someone decent to listen too. Not that there's anything wrong with the other guys on in the morning, but Phil has the morning stuff down to a tee. I've heard Joe do alot of commercials for Earl. Any word on Sarah - if she'll be a part of the Earl team? It will also be a real treat to have someone telling who the artists are that they're playing. Me, along with most of the rest of Knoxville have slept alot since most of those songs were new and it's kinda hard to remember who those artists are. If the DJ's do it right, and give "Earl" the right personality and feel, then this is a station that has the ability to take listeners away from several major players in the Knoxville market like Star, WIMZ, B-97, The Point, and being that this station sounds 150% better than Jack on it's best day, Earl might just be a winner.

Question is - since Earl is adding DJ's, how about Jack? Will they try to copy Earl and ad some on air personalities of their own?

Sarah has left the radio business for good and is pursuing a carrer in nursing.

Jack in Knoxville cannot add DJs without changing its name, because of the copyright ABC Radio has on the name. All stations outside the top 50 markets can only use the "Jack" name if they are broadcasting the ABC satelite feed.

I can't say that I don't blame Sarah. She's been at 4 different stations here in Knoxville and lost her job at every one of them. 3 were were with WOKI (98.7 The X, Eagle100, 100.3 The River, and 98.7 The River, and her short time over at 105.3) She was a class act when it came to on air personalities and it's a shame no one else would give her a chance. I wish her the best of luck though.

I wonder how long it will be before Jack hits the road?

No way...Phis is not gonna leave his great shift at newstalk..
I would tend to belive Joe might be back on the air...But I'd
bet the kitchen sink that Willians will stay right where he is!

Then I'll take your bet. It was announced on-air on NewsTalk Friday. New afternoon show will be announced on the Hal show at 9 Monday.

I don't know what the show on Monday will be, but with Citadel "buying" ABC, bet your bottom dollar that Sean Hannity will be on that station as soon as they can serve out their notice on 850.

Remeber....Friday was the last weekday before April 1.....

Why in the world would they want to move a solid local newstalk guy to a low budget station like Earl, to make room for another nationally syndicated talk show? They are probably making good money off of the Phil Show on NewsTalk. A local newstalk show is going to sell way better.....especially someone known in the area like Phil is. And you certainly wouldn't make near the money by him moving to Earl. This would be a ridiculous move by Citadel. Of course it is a stunt.

Top 40 markets, actually, except for #44, which is programmed
locally vs. the bird. The satellite feed doesn't make room
for air staff nor is it flexible to compete in a local market.
I still think it is shortsighted to have gone with that plan
so early in the Jack concept because it limits it's abilty to
compete and THAT alone should be the entire reason for jack.

Earl seems to be doing some things right. Wonder how it would
be doing if it was on 100kw 100.3?

Maybe it is a stunt, but these nuggets from the WNOX email newsletter:

From the "Phil Show" section:
"As you know Phil Williams has gone back to morning radio, you can now him on Earl FM 98.7 starting at 6am. Stayed tuned to the Big Ta;ker Newstalk 100 for further programming updates."

From the Hal Hill section:
"Finally, everyone is asking, What`s up with Phil?...So we`ll get Phil on this morning to talk about it. We'll also announce the new Big Talker afternoon lineup."

I suppose we'll learn more tomorrow.

It was an April Fool's joke!

> It was all just a big April Fool's stunt, as many had guessed. Phil was on Hal's show just after 9AM this morning, and let the cat out of the bag. He is NOT leaving and will be on WNOX this afternoon as usual.

As I've said here before, you can't ever bet much more than an adult beverage on radio happenings.

Gotcha

Well planned among staffers, listeners took the bait, including BRice16 (Joe on the air, other staffers may be announced? Wow.) over 100 emails to PW, several writing back Monday that they enjoyed the joke, even the ones who complained the loudest, LOL. Who says N/T has to be all politics? Re: It was an April Fool's joke!

I have to say, this was a great and funny April Fool's stunt! I was listening to Earl when a recording of Phil came on and said "Good Morning Knoxville! I'm Phil Williams and it is great to be back on morning radio here on 98.7 Earl FM." Then he said that actually he wasn't coming back and said "Happy April Fools!"

Joe was actually supposed to be on today with the "We Play Everything" lunch hour. He said he would be taking requests and playing what the listeners wanted. I didn't get a chance to listen though, did anyone else get to hear Joe's new show?

It appears that this Earl Revolution is simply the listeners turning their work radios to 98.7. That's the whole revolution! They kept us in suspense for this? Well, it was fun anyway!

Well, Scott, you have made your first impression in Knoxville. I actually only heard Phil's announcement because he was behind getting to his 5:30 break and mentioned "the future." (It was a stroke of genuis, I suppose, to have hime use nearly the same speech about leaving that he used when announcing his departure from The River) I can't listen to him in the afternoon, because afternoons in East Tennessee are reserved for SportsTalk. I was looking forward to him returning to mornings, but I guess now I have to stick to the CD player in the morning, as Knoxville's morning scene is a varitable wasteland, devoid of any talent whatsoever.

Morning radio in Knoxville a wasteland?...Come on,don't let the "joke"
ruin you perception...There's a lot of variety in K-twn morning radio..If
you want a talker,Hal's the man...country twang..A&A...great show on 102 with
Marc,Kim,& Frank..with the big show on IMZ(qut to)...not a big fan of the
b-97 morning show now,but you might like it...plus there's more out there
to choose from....you weren't the only one burned by the April's fool joke..
Take it easy...And almost forgot..the sports animal is a good option to..Dearstone and Jacoby are good together...lot better without Hooker..

I've said on here many times before this how bad Knoxville morning radio is, way before any of this.

Marc and Kim are ok, Franks adds alot to that show. Jon Boy and Billy is the worst show in the market, I still can't understand how those guys ever got a syndication deal past Charlotte. I guess they appeal to a certain demograpic, but how many ad buyers are going after the conveince store employee market? I tried to listen one day, but they were so busy laughing at themseleves, I couldn't figure out what the joke was.

I don't know about the A&A show, never listened because, at some point, they would start playing country music.

As for the Sports Animal, I disagree with you completely there, Hooker was great in the morning. I don't mind the Dearstone/Jacoby show, but there's only so much of their caller base that I can stand each day.
