The Real Reason for the failure of Talk Radio in Boston is...

cs1366 said:
WHATEVER THE FORMAT.....Local radio must connect with the audience and deliver compelling content. It's knowing the climate, tastes, temperature, hitting hot buttons and keep them coming back for more. You're only as good as you last show. Prepare. Stand out. Present great product. Music, talk, information, sports, Boston is big time with a wonderfully tough, opinionated crowd. Set those standards high and force the broadcast folks to do better, knowing their audience wants and advertiser needs. Don't follow; lead!

THIS is what great Program Directors are made of!!!!!!!

Such erudite commentary - it's a real mystery why Boston listeners didn't embrace Ingraham's show.

In ages past...when call-in talk radio was first getting off the ground, the vast majority of the first crop of talk "hosts" were converted disc jockeys....who may or may not have had much grounding in current events, or had strong political views....BUT..what they DID have was a strong grounding in what makes a radio show successful and keep people listening...a perfect example being guys like Jerry Williams and Larry Glick.

Nowadays...it seems the political agenda...whatever the flavor...gets in the way from today's hosts being able to actually ENTERTAIN and keep a show from getting stale.

Really? Most of the ones I knew were experts in their field. Lawyers, businessmen, therapists, etc. They were the first generation of talk show hosts back in the 60s and 70s. It's when DJs started hosting talk shows that the shows ceased to be about useful things and became a pile of hot air.

....lack of host Talent!

Yes, there are some hosts(esses) out there who do have talent (Locally, I think of WBZ-1030's Dan Rea and WRKO-680's Howie Carr; whether you agree with the latter's views of not, most will admit that Carr is entertaining).

The truth is that Talk Radio is in the business of entertainment!

On the national level, Rush Limbaugh has long been successful not only for (or even not because of) his views, but because he delivers an entertaining product.

One reason Air America bellied-up, in my opinion, was that with the exceptions of Al Franken and Stephanie Miller, the hosts weren't entertaining.

Are you listening to the same Rush Limbaugh as the rest of us? Tired, boring, predictable, in love with his own voice, views and ego, Republicans-good-Democrats-bad-lather-rinse-repeat, ad nauseum? He's just as pedantic these days as the Air America buffoons who thought that left-wing lectures would somehow be entertaining.

He was entertaining in 1987. Not now.

@Gallant: Al Franken was entertaining, but in a perverse kind of way... O'Reilly seemed to enjoy his radio show more than most! :D

There is still an entertaining Rush Limbaugh on the radio - the one voiced by Jim Ward.

600 stations and $59 million per year... when he gets down to maybe 50 and his salary gets cut let me know

Being overpaid is not an indication of success. How many of these 600 stations are small market AM stations that run nothing but syndicated talk?

The average Limbo listener is a 72 white male. Not exactly a growth demo.

Right though I would have thought it to be more like late 50s early 60s, also not exactly desired. If he's overpaid maybe CC-Premiere would cut his salary next contract; who knows if they're losing big $ on his contract or not (Meanwhile there are other hosts who are older and prob have audiences in mostly older demos--Imus, now 72, re-upped for 3 yrs in Dec. Still on WZAN where you can
hear him doing localized ads. They're doing OK despite the aged demos.)

Thinking of the various AM and FM stations in town it's tough to think of whom might go all
talk. At this point it's RKO plus some talk shows on WBZ and public radio...and a few on
some other stations (the Salem stations who run Jay Sekulow; stations like Fitchburg's
WPKZ or stations in Worc, NH, the Cape, or RI who reach part of the area; religious talk on 1060
(but maybe I should just confine this to politically oriented--there may be talk shows on business stations like 1120...)...there's talk on WCAP, etc.
Anyway besides what we have already I don't know who would want to switch. And if they
did (say, if 590 went to cons. talk) it would probably be birdfed much like efforts on
890 and 1150 in the past. Is the money there and would anyone want to invest in local
hosts beyond what we have?

Or as his show calls him, "the drug-addled gasbag." :D

Not all that many of the 600, I would think. If I recall correctly, Premiere charges a hefty fee to air Rush, and there are other "must carry" requirements (Dr. Laura, etc.) Is this still the case? I remember WRKO having to carry Dr. Laura and Dean Edell at one time, but somehow they managed to modify their agreement. The spots within remained ROS for a long time, as I recall.
