The reality of Rochester TV

If you are looking to settle down in Rochester and make a career for yourself in TV news then you apply for jobs at either 10 or 13. If instead you are looking to pad your resume by having worked in a medium market station for a short period of time, then you apply to Channel 8.

Now the irony here is that, according to well placed sources, Channel 8 actually pays starting reporters better than 10 and 13. Yet because of its reputation and history, more young reporters are attempting to work for Channels 10 and 13 than WROC.

Here is another bit of interesting information. A few people who worked at 8 have gone to 10 or 13. Names that immediately come to mind include Brett Davidsen. The late Pete Dobrovitz, and Kevin Williams. But how many people from 10 and 13 have decided to leave those stations to work for 8? With the exception of two people back in the 1970s (Mark Wolf and Ron Robitille), I can’t think of one person.

Think a little harder, then.

-John Kucko left 13 and went to 8,
-Cathy Orosz went from 10 to 8
-Wanda Neil went from 10 to 8
...and don't forget that Kevin Williams left 13 and went to 8, before going to 10.

Rachel Barnhart left R-news for 8,..
...as did Christine Crafts.

(FYI Several Photogs and producers also left 10, 13, and 31 to go to 8 in recent years)

31 I can understand considering that was part of the deal worked out between Sinclair and Nexstar. But as for the others, how many of them are still at 8?

All things considered, yes. He was the #2 guy at 13 under Catalana, and probably still would be today had he not made the move. But don't take my word for it, ask him yourself.

She was happy for the first few years, as she sought an opportunity to anchor, which did not have at 10 but got at 8. But, ..as you say,..the last year has been a different story.

Uh,..no...I mean Wanda Neil, a reporter who worked on Wakeup Rochester. But now that you bring it up, yes..Wanda Miller is ANOTHER person who left 13 to go to 8.

I'm not talking about the "merger" refugees,..as that just occurred in August.
I'm talking about guys and gals who came over from those stations in the five years prior to that.

But as for the

A few.
