The Red Sox Network

What stations were in this network? I remember WSBK/38 & WLNE-TV/6 (or sometimes W48AE, later WLNE-LP) as showing Red Sox games in the 1990s. I also remember the games on WABU/68. Any other stations in this network?

WTXX-TV (CW) channel 20 of Waterbury/Hartford carried games before. I think that was when WFXT-TV was the flagship.

The SOX and The Yanks have been both bounced all over the TV Dial in Hartford. As Kevin mentioned WTXX/20 carried them at one time as did channel 59 in New Haven which at one time was WTVU and WBNE and is now WCTX. Some of the games were on WVIT/30 NBC at one time. I remember the cable company used to cover up WSBK with WVIT during the games. And in Springfield, Mass the games were on WDMR-LP which was on Channel 65 back when the games were on WABU/68.

Two longtime affilates of the Red Sox TV network that come to mind were WWLP in Springfield and WMTW-TV Portland-Lewiston Mount Washington.

Some Sox fans who were Western MA & Northern CT in the mid to late 70s may recall defunct stations Channel 32 WRLP-TV in Greenfield, MA and low power Channel 69 in Springfield, MA for catching games not available on Channel 22 WWLP-TV. Also Channel 3 WFSB in Hartford, CT picked up selected Sox telecasts using a raw feed without Channel 38's graphics in the late 70s & early 80s. Channel 18 WHCT in Hartford picked up Sox telecasts in 1998. Channel 40 WGGB in Springfield, MA took over from WWLP in 1989, and carried Sunday afternoon Sox games thru 1993.

Before WSBK began their 20 year run of Sox telecasts, Sox games were seen in Boston on Channel 4 WBZ from 1972 - 1974. Prior to that, Bostonians caught Sox games on the old Channel 5 WHDH.

In Bangor, the Sox were seen on WABI-TV 5 in the 60's. I do believe it was sometime in the 70's that they then went to WLBZ-TV 2.

On the radio side, which station has had the Sox on for the longest continuous run?

Good ol' WDEA-AM 1370, Ellsworth!

Nope! The longest Red Sox radio run is with WTIC-AM 1080 of Hartford, who has carried them for 50 years. They're also the only 50,000 clear channel on the entire network. As for my Yankees, select games will be on WCTX-TV/DT (MY) channel 59/digital 39 in 2009 (the games aired origianlly by WWOR in New York of course).

I recall reading somewhere (it may have even been on this board) that prior to Channel 5 WHDH's existence in 1957, Red Sox (and the Braves, when they were still in Boston) telecasts were split between Channels 4 & 7, because the sponsor, Narragansett beer, didn't want to show favoritism toward either station.

In the 90's when WABU had the rights then WB affiliate WBGR (now ion/religious) carried Sox games in Bangor. I remember this because one night they were carrying a west coast game that at 3am got automatically switched over to Shepard's Chapel Network and there was nothing the board op could do.

WSBK was the flagship and WWLP in Springfield was our affiliate in the late 70's.

WPME of Lewiston used to boradcast Red Sox from their launch in 1997 until 2002.

Before that, WCSH/6 would occasionally broadcast a game, maybe just weekend day games, I can't remember exactly.

WWLP Springfield (channel 22) carried the Red Sox for many years.

I moved to Connecticut in 1968 and the Red Sox were on WNHC New Haven (channel 8). They switched to the Mets after that team won the World Series.
