The Regular Guys are slipping

I have been a big fan of the regular guys for years. Is it me, or have the regular guys lost their edge? They just seem to talk and talk and talk with each other. Caller participation has become nonexistent. The show has become very segmented without any spontaneity. Is it me, or have you noticed a difference sense they came back to 96 rock?

Yes! Someone other than me has finally said what I've been saying for months!

after last year's incident with the sex act on air, the regular guys have had to change thier act. Clear Channel has a very strict decensy policy.

Yea, I've listened to them for years...Pre-WKLS, Post-WGST, and Post-WKLS.

They are still great, I record them every morning, but the spark is missing.

The two are very talented to say the least, and I'm not a shock jock fan (with what they used to do with porn stars and all), but it's just not the same show.

As much as I hate SSS, is he the "spark" that is missing"???

Also, does Virgin Murray piss anyone else off? His sidebar laughs and comedy seem awkward at best. He is a great producer (hence the show on WGST), but shut it and run the board!
Edited by SelfRightingKid on 07/18/05 06:04 PM.

I'm actually enjoying them more now
I was never into the stripper/porno stuff, so I don't miss it.
I do think they need another "Southside" to abuse, but I think they'll find someone eventually.

What happened to Eric's GST show, I can never seem to catch it?

Even at 1/4 speed they are 10x better than anything else Atlanta radio has to offer.

And they dont have any caller interaction and who really cares? Bunch of brain-dead rednecks calling up to show how stupid they really can be. I dont miss people calling in at all, its a welcome change to the show.

If they are slow, just remember they didnt seem that good when they first came on the air and I had to let them grow on me like a fungus, now it wont clear.
______________
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

I hate to admit it but they are boring. I've found myself switching stations and I never used to do that.

It's an entirely different show. No massage parlor review, no suggestive talk with callers, no flirting with hot interns, no remote broadcasts, no SSS beating. Boring news jog. Half hearted comment. I hate it. What a loss.

How is it bad that they've got rid of a lot of the dumber, predictable stuff?

The sex talk and political screaming matches only go so far. What I've heard is a successful effort not to try to outdo themselves and swing for the fences every time out. It's a talk show for 40-45 year olds. I think they've done a remarkable job of picking up where they left off and making the show more listenable and well-rounded without resorting to the crutch of trying hard to sound cool and 25. Go around the dial and even on satellite and find me a show that combines all the elements of good broadcasting with the personal feel of podcasting...I'll wait.

And after three months, I don't think they've come close to finishing off the reinvention project. There are some elements missing such as a comic foil off the street, but a good hire takes time and $$. Remember, it's still CC and Marc Chase at the helm.

Damned if they act like shock jocks, damned if they don't. The ratings will tell.

Yeah and the yard sale broadcast really brought out the classy people didnt it?

I hate stunts like these, its the only reason that I ever change the dial in the morning.
______________

Today on Opie and Anthony, they claimed that the Regular Guys are guilty of constantly ripping their bits off from previous days and then doing them on their own show the next day. Not exactly sure to believe, but that's quite a harsh accusation.

I appreciate the rebuttal but it doesn't change the fact that I'm listening to other stations because I'm bored with larry and eric. A 1 hour rehash of yesterday's news with the constantly interrupting larry is boring.

your right about the man on the street stuff. The fat intern guy (don't remember his name), homeless karoake and the like was really funny.

I agree that we don't have an alternative on free broadcast but that doesn't make them more interesting. It just makes me hope to find another great podcast or two to listen to on the morning drive.

I've always enjoyed their off-the-cuff punditry on the news more than the bits, and felt they opened themselves to the "Stern ripoff" tag with the porn actress stuff. On the other hand they really dazzled me during the Gary Condit case, for instance. Though there was never really anything new to report on that story, they somehow had a fresh five minutes of great lines and insights about it every day, as long as it was in the news.

I disagree with BigBopper that they didn't sound great when they first came on. Those were the GREATEST shows. Undiluted, in a new town and ready to make a name for themselves. Great days.

I would have been interested to hear how the WGST show would have grown. I found their on-air grousing about touring empty stadiums to be comedy gold!

Hey, SelfRightingKid...do you have any pre-WKLS tapes? Any KLSX stuff? How about very-early WKLS?
______________

Yeah, you're right. They only went from 14th to 6th, P25-54, in less than 1 book. Sucks.
