"The Rest of The story"

Growing up in the mid-fifties, I discovered Rock N' Roll, and I was hooked, became a fanatic , a freak (My wife sez "You need Therapy"). I had to research every Artist, every song, what was the label, the flip side. who wrote It, learn every member of the band, their hometown ,etc.........Over the years my passion turned me into, as one collegue of mine put It, during our weekly poker game....."A walking encyclopedia of use-less information". Over the years thou, when a bet had to be settled at the office cooler.....did they call Ghost Busters, no ........ the local Oldies station no..

What my friends like to hear the most is the story behind the song...... here is one of my favorites (source fred bronson/billboard) studio musicians guitarist Dave Burgess and sax player Daniel Flores (aka Chuck Rio) were doing a session for Jerry Wallace in 1958....there was some studio time left and the engineer asked the guys if they would like to lay something down...Flores said I wrote this Riff in Tijuana and burgess added some guitar licks, the song had a definite mexican flavor to it, and at the end of the Instrumental they yelled out XXXXXXX. they left the studio, the engineer duped an acetate and took it to a local LA station..the audience response was huge the group, was signed to Challege records thru Jerry Wallace They needed a Name for the group and the song..

Challenge records was owned by Gene Autry so they named theselves after his Horse the song was released
and shot straight to number One!!! Thus was born "Tequila" by the Champs.
The Epilogue to the story...Daniel Flores (27 yrs old with a family) did not want to tour with Champs but would record with them...the champs were a revolving door of touring musicians which included then unkowns , "Seal and Crofts", and "Glen Cambell"....most Champ recordings were by studio musicians not the touring band with the exception of Dave Burgess and Glen Cambell who by 1961 one of the most sought after session guys in Hollywood until his fame in 1965, didn't allow many studio gigs. Campbell left the touring Champs by the early 60's to tour with the Beachboys, replacing Brian Wilson.

Do you have a favorite story to share ??????

I love your story Hornet. Like you I've loved Rock & Roll since it was born. I share many of the same experiences as you in that whenever there was question about a song or a group I was called upon to be the referee who was to decide which person was right--if either.
Thanks to me my wife has become a semi-expert in R&R also, and when we met over 35 years ago she knew very little.

One of my favorite stories is one that Dick Biondi has told. When he was working in Buffalo, NY in 1958 he MCd an outdoor hop starring Link Wray among others in a park along the Lake--Lake Ontario on the New York side. Link Wray was partially deaf even then and when he was playing his guitar lead in "Rumble" at this outdoor venue the amplification was so loud that they got complaints from across the lake on the canadian side to knock it off.

Link Wray joins the ranks of the hearing Impaired to chart...includes very deaf Johnny Ray.

Another Good story about a #1 song is "He's a Rebel" by the Crystals...or so it said on the label.

Spectre heard a demo of "He's a Rebel" written by Gene Pitney, and was blown away....he also heard that a young unkown named Vicky Carr was releasing it soon, on Liberty Records.....Spectre had just formed Philles Records on the strength of his hit with the Teddy Bears "To Know Him Was To love Him", and wanted to record "He's a Rebel" with his new discovery the Crystals(La La Brooks, Barabar Alston, DeeDee Kinebrew) whom he knew back in NY. It was a race against the clock with the Impending release by Carr...he assembled the studio musicians and couldn't wait for the Crystals to fly in from NY, he recruited local backup singers the Blossoms (Darlene love, Fanita James and Gloria Nitchke) and recorded He's a Rebel....since the Crystals were his future project thats who appeared on the label and It shot straighjt to #1.
Epilogue: Darlene Love later fronted another Spectre group Bobby Soxx and Blue jeans and continued to record with the Blossoms and did some acting (Dany Glovers wife in Lethal Action). The Crystals had a few hits with Spectre before the arrival of the Ronnettes. Even thou is says the Crystals on "He's a Rebel" on the record label, it was the Blossoms. Also appearing as back-up singers on "He's a Rebel" are Sonny and Cher. Sonny Bono made is Bones in Hollywood as apprentice (go-fer)to Phil Spectre and often brought his barely teenage girlfriend Cherylnn La Pierre with him to recording sessions.

I've heard that story too except for the part about Sonny & Cher which I didn't know.
Regarding the Vicky Carr version it was a hit in Australia. Have you ever heard it?
IMO it's awful.

Reminds me of the Christy Lane commercials in which she sings, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Dreadful...just dreadful. Every time that commercial comes on I beg the dear Lord that somebody would be kind enough to run their fingernails down a chalkboard.

But back to Darlene Love, my two favs that she performed are "Today I Met The Boy I'm Gonna Marry", and "Marshmallow World".
Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans: "Why Do Lovers Break Each Others' Hearts?" and "The Bells of St. Mary's".
Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah always reminds me not only of the story of Bre'r Rabbit, but a saying of the South that pretty much means you can run but you can't hide...you can try to avoid the tar baby any number of ways, but you're still gonna get tar on ya."

>>But back to Darlene Love, my two favs that she performed are "Today I Met The Boy I'm Gonna Marry">>

That's my favorite by her too.

Back to Spector...another story

Spector's father dies when he was nine and his mother packed up and moved to hollywood, Spectre attended Fairfax High, with mates Marshall Leib and Annette Kleinbard, they formed a group the Teddybears and recorded a song that shot up to Number " To know Him Is To Love Him" the title came from Spectre's fathers headstone That Read To "Know Him, Was Love Him".

Epilogoe: Annette Kleinbard changed her name to Carol Conners for the Teddy Bears and eventually became a song writer ("Hey little Cobra" and "Theme from Rocky"), Marshal Leib sang with The Hollywood Argyles for a While (which means he was on two different number 1's with two different groups, pretty cool, huh)and produced a hit for the group the Ribbons "Ain't Gonna Kiss Ya" - Leib died in 2002.........Spector, well, he just went crazy.

PS:sometimes I misspell Spector (Spectre..I guessI watched too much "James Bond" Or "Man from uncle", I can't remember which one has Spectre or somthing like it).

This would explain "Phil Loves Annette" being scrawled on the blank end of some Spector-produced 45s right by the edge of the label. Check your collections. Go to used record stores, thrift shops, garage sales, and what have you. If you find one, BANG! Instant collector's item.

Tall Paul (which actually was about Paul Anka) made it to the top ten. If Walt Disney protected Annette from Paul Anka, do we dare imagine what he thought about Phil Spector?

Have you seen Spector lately? Very sad.

Yes, I have seen him. I have also seen his young wife standing by him for all she is worth. Just a hunch, given the crocodile tears she was producing, that she is pretty sure that he is gone for the rest of his life. Won't she be surprised if he ever gets out! Old age and treachery overcame his youth and skill.

The guy looks like he is in a drug induced stupor. His eyes are very scary.

Amazing Story.........Anti-American Song by a Canadian Group shoots up to number one, in of all places the USA.

Taking a cue from all the anti-Amercan fallout from the Viet Nam war, Canadian Supergroup "Guess Who" released a thinly veiled Anti-American song "American Woman"...and were quickly rewarded by asending to the top of the USA charts .

American woman
Listen what I say
Dont come hanging around my door
Dont want to see your face no more
I dont need your war machines
I dont need your ghetto scenes

Epilogue: During this anti-America period, around late 60's and early 70's, three young men (US military dependants) who had crossed paths over the years, were reunited at an Air Force Base in England, and formed a band. Legend has it that they named their group after an "Americana Juke Box"...but, it may have been more their longing for their homeland , their pride in their homeland and their resentment of the Ant-America sentiments....Shortly after "American Woman" went to number one, they scored a number one of their own, "A Horse With no Name" and thus was born the group "America". .........A few years later Neil Young with his song "Southern Man" would enflame a up and coming Southern Rock Band, and they would fire back with both barrels, thus came their answer song"Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynard Skynard.

There are a few of those types of songs out there that have nasty little overtones performed by groups that just preyed upon the sentiment of the day.
