The Return Of K-T-F-M

I was able to read most of your article, and kudos. Dominique's opinion was blurred out, however.

If KTFM wants to really go after Mix 96.1, it needs to switch with Jack and get back on 102.7. It is still hard to believe when I am in SA and tune to 102.7, KTFM is not there. No Hot Henrietta, no Drex, not even Angelina's remake of The Tide is High.

A Top 40 format is more deserving of 102.7's coverage area than a classic hits format, anyway.

I think if Jack wasn't so successful they would seriously consider it. But with Jacks ratings what they are I don't think they would do this. If it ain't broke why fix it? San Antonio would lose its mind if they did.

Jack has good ratings? Really? That's surprising.

Do you think an rock alternative station would fare well in SA?

I still believe that if the numbers continue to increase at KTFM then BMP will likely consider moving KTFM back to 102.7.

Btw no surprise here:
Landis- "KTFM has slowly added more and more pop music to its format for the last several months. The more we added, the more our ratings increased."
KTFM sounds 10x better than it did a month ago.

Some people are telling me the article cuts out in the middle of it.  Strange cause it looked normal when I viewed it.  Anyhow, I will paste it here in case you wanna finish reading it.  Thanks everyone.

The battle officially begins 94.1 KTFM vs Mix 96.1

When you say the call letters K-T-F-M around San Antonio you will get a different array of people with different opinions on what those letters mean to them.

By default most people who have lived in this city for more than two decades will recall the heritage station that ruled the airwaves for over 20 years on the 102.7 channel.

Ktfm.jpg

Since that time in 2003 then owner Infinity Broadcasting flipped formats to 102.7 and released the rights to use the call letters KTFM. A short while later BMP Radio bought 102.7 and 550AM KTSA from Infinity Broadcasting and swiftly moved in and purchased those rights and affiliated the calls KTFM with then Jammin 94.1

For whatever reason 94.1 has gone through it's own share of transformations including it's most recent changes.

Until recently KTFM was known as a Hot AC station. Someone once described it as a Mix 96.1 clone without the rap or Hip Hop. But that was short lived because as of April 11, 2010 yet another transformation has become of KTFM.

94.1 KTFM moved from the Media Base Hot AC panel to the Top 40 mainstream panel. You may ask yourself... "What does this mean?" This means that 94.1 KTFM is no longer a Hot A/C station and is now considered a top 40 station.

LET THE BATTLE OF THE TOP 40 RADIO STATIONS OFFICIALLY BEGIN!!!

For months the station has made a slow transition by adding more and more music that would be considered top 40.

I can already see the newspaper stories now....

newspaper.jpg

Even though both these stations are considered top 40 stations there will still be a considerable difference between the two.

I contacted Vice President of English Programming for Border Media Mark Landis to help explain those differences.

KTFM has slowly added more and more pop music to its format for the last several months. The more we added, the more our ratings increased. On Friday, Media Base and Billboard moved us to the Top 40 Mainstream reporting panel for San Antonio.

KTFM is a Top 40 mainstream radio station that will lean Rhythmic. There are no "Hot AC" songs on the radio station. All of the songs on our playlist can be found on the mainstream Top 40 charts.

KTFM is not a "dance" station, nor a Rhythmic reporter. We'll leave that to The Beat.

KTFM's Core Artists will feature today's hit music from -Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Iyaz, Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Justin Timberlake etc., we will leave the "rock" leaning songs to Mix.

So what does this mean for San Antonio? We already recently saw a battle between the two Hip Hop stations here in town and now we seem to be geared up to watch a top 40 battle as well. A realistic outlook would be that most listeners will flip to both stations as loyalty is almost nonexistent. A somewhat advantage 94.1 has is the history it's call letters have with this city. No one can ever deny the powerhouse the old KTFM used to be and it can almost easily be said that 94.1 will pick up some of those old listeners.

DOMINIQUE'S OPINION
I think this kind of friendly competition makes for great radio. Stations with direct competition tend to stay on top of things and not let themselves get sloppy. I used to work for Mix and I have an enormous amount of respect for the people there. I think they are doing a great job and their ratings reflect that. Mix sounds great and I think it will be very difficult to beat them. However I was born and raised in San Antonio. I also grew up listening to KTFM. I think BMP Radio has made a great decision to go top 40. As of lately they too have been sounding fantastic. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn't choose either station. I think San Antonio is large enough to support both stations. After all from a musical stand point they play slightly different music. I would like to wish both stations the best of luck. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!!!!

It's a pipe dream if anyone thinks BMP is going to touch Jack - it has great ratings, almost no overhead, and is billing well. The change in 106.7 is going to impact it, but not to the point where BMP would swap frequencies.

Regular San Antonians don't have this sort of passion for 'KTFM' except some of us radio geeks. The city hasn't cared since 2001 when CBS killed it. If they did care about the KTFM 'brand', 94.1 would have done better with those call letters (by default) back when it was Rhythm AC.

C'mon Dominique - as a journalist you really out to be more objective

Ha ha you are not the first to tell me that Beaun.  I can respect your opinion.  However long ago I learned a lesson the hard way that you do not make enemies in this business.  (Hense my signature to the left that reads "Who you see going up success will see you going down")  Besides, I honestly do think they are making a great move on their behalf.  If I did not I still do not see the point on bashing anyone.  Not a good way for a outta work jock to land a position with any radio company.  But at the same time I am not schmoozing anyone, I am simply putting the information out there.  Thanks for reading.

I miss the Hot AC on 94.1. Like I said in another thread, they played newer and different stuff than Magic and mix and now it's gone. I hate Magic cause it's too 80's still and not enough of the real Hot AC stuff that you'd find in other markets like Mix 96.5 in Houston or the one in Dallas. Why oh why does this city embrace the 80's and older music so much?

Good for you, KTFM!

I am glad to finally see a rhythmic leaning Top 40 radio station back in SA, without all the Hot AC foo-foo riff-raff blah stuff. Hot AC isn't working anymore: I mean come on, have you seen KAMX's latest ratings?

With a station similar to Wild 94.9, KTFM will do really well and maybe become the leading Top 40 station in SA really soon! And it IS possible for an old radio station to make a comeback, if WKTU can do it in New York, then I am sure KTFM will too.

Now all thats left is for KTFM to switch back to 102.7. I still remember the days of "Hot 103 KTFM!"

I agree. It would sweet to move KTFM back to 102.7 but in the mean time, lets see who comes out on top...Mix or KTFM.

I pick KTFM. And I wouldn't be surprised if they do better than 98.5.

It will be fine on 94.1. There's nothing wrong with the signal at all.

Was visiting San Antonio this past weekend from Houston for the fiestas and was checking out the local stations. Mainly KTFM 94.1, KXXM 96.1 AND KBBT 98.5. Surprisingly my favorite was 94.1 KTFM! I thought Mix was gonna be my favorite but i found myself never wanting to change the station when i was listening to 94.1 Even the mixes were good! Keep up the good work KTFM! Good luck.

Damn, this station is sounding real good now! Is it just me, or are they becoming increasingly dance friendly? ;D

KTFM definitely has an uptempo mood to it and I say this a good thing considering most current artist are following this movement such as Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha and many others including well known Hip Hop artist. In addition, they sound very unique. As for Mix and The Beat, they sounds like every other station in the US.....boring.

Dj Dark Intensity is the remix version KTFM is playing of Bedrock....very cool version. I remember when The Beat used play remix versions of songs but now....same ol crap. They've gotten lazy over the past year or so.

GO SPURS GO!!!!
