The return of Russ and Diane????

In a recent Twitter from Shay Totten in Seven Days

Desmond tells Seven Days she and Kinsley have found a new frequency for their album-oriented rock and will be back on the air in the near future. Stay tuned for details, she said.

The question is where on the dial? Any thoughts?

Re: The return of Russ and Diane

She's been saying that for months. The problem with that format is that it was not a commercial success. It garnered a loyal but modest audience better suited to a non-commercial listener-supported station. In fact, that's what it is now as a Live 365 stream (where it's still called "WCLX - 102.5 FM"!)

The other problem is that most area station owners have seen their conduct following their demise on WCLX. Take a look at the history of Diane's edits as "Lucy Frampton" on the WCLX Wikipedia listing, for example. She changed WCLX from 6,000 Watts to "600" and the community-of-license from "Westport" to "West Pork," and changed the "Farm Fresh Radio" slogan to "fartfresh," among other brilliant and creative changes. These juvenile edits appeared for only a short time, but earned her a vandalism warning from Wikipedia.

Their website contains a series of slurs and untruths about how they lost WCLX. As noted in an earlier blog by Shay Totten in Seven Days, they've had disputes with other owners, including the folks at the new 107.1/WNMR, and unfortunately have burned a lot of bridges.

My guess would be that they may try for 107.5 in West Rutland, even though the station has been deleted. Or perhaps an area AM station.

This is the part that amazes me most.

Do Diane and Russ think potential radio partners are blind to these kinds of antics?

Vermont radio is a very, very small community, everyone knows everyone else. These sorts of tactics do nothing but make Russ and Diane radioactive. What radio station general manager or owner in his/her right mind would strike a deal with them, short of anything less than desperation?

Editing Wikipedia? What is she, 12? Wow, a bitter juvenile loser in Burlington radio. Shocking.

The few times I have had the misfortune of dealing with her that is how she has been. Nothing new, nothing surprising.

Re: The return of Russ and Diane

Looks like they're trying for an arrangement with Nassau to get on 101.5, licensed to Brandon and serving Rutland. It's a different and much smaller market from that of WCLX, but it does have the call letters "WEXP." Those calls used to be on 105.1 in Plattsburgh, and they were involved there with a similar format until everyone ran out of money and the group had to sell it (to Hall, which made it "Kool 105.")

I’ve been in radio a long time… And I’ve seen some pathetic moves... but this Wikipedia vandalism takes the cake. I kind of feel bad for Russ and Diane; their bitterness runs deep. There’s more to life than radio-don’t let it ruin you.

Peace for the holidays

I remember the WEXP launch party.

Lots of "chiefs", all of them thinking that this radio station would eat up the Burlington market and they'd all be rich playing Pink Floyd and its ilk. Instead, the Burlington market ate them, their business plan was essentially non-existent.

And yeah, Louie is right, there is indeed more to life than radio.

Hello, Louie. Havn't seen you here in quite some time. Cheers.

Nassau just applied for a microwave shot from Moriah, NY to Grandpa's Nob where the WEXP transmitter sits. There is a clear STL shot from Addison (the studio home of Russ and Diane) to Moriah. No shot from Addison directly to Grandpa's Nob. Looks like the Fox will soon be undergoing a transformation....

An anything-goes format under Nassau's umbrella? End times must truly be upon us. Guess they're willing to try just about anything at this point...

I'm surprised no one had brought up the silent WYME 97.9 in Au Sable NY / Burlington as a possible home for Russ and Diane.. That would make much better sense for their 'audience'. Honestly, I cannot see the "Music Heads" making any real meaningful impact in Rutland if 'Peter Tripp' is correct in his statement. Does not make sense.

Or does the Nassau prospect mean corporate guidance weighing-in on the "free-form" AAA? Have Russ and Diane "sold-out" just to stay on the air? ??? :-X (Judging from past posts, this idea does not fall in line with previous performance, but ya never know.) :D

Russ Kinsley, Sell Out?!?

No way.

This is a man who has the motto "The Man can't bust our music" tattooed on his left forearm directly underneath the tattooed images of Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh and Abbie Hoffman each smoking a doob.

:D

I'm sure that they would LMA The Fox from Nassau and not work for them. I hear it'ds has barely any billing. Easy way for nassau to cut overhead.

Isn't the reason Dennis Jackson pulled the plug that they were way behind on their payments? What's worse, a station you program that generates little income, or one you LMA out that doesn't generate any income?

Mr. Bones,
I would say both! It's time for Dennis Jackson to find somebody to LMA the station that is going to bring in some good cash to keep the operation going. Most people who do LMA (I'm speaking about some individuals, not corporate groups) stations, just to be a star and they think they are going to set the world on fire with their non-sense ideas, and half of them don't know how to go out and sell local ads to local clients. They are clueless on how to run a station on a budget, and still bring out local, quality programming.
If you're going to LMA a station out, do background checks on the individuals before making a deal! That's my 2 cents worth!

The simple fact of the matter is that B-P has too many stations for the population. Two main rock stations, three oldies/classic hits stations, and two country stations. 102.9 isn't going to ever make money with WNCS around. Period.

These are the kind of stunts that give radio a bad name.
Why would and owner take a shot with them when they can easily pick up another show or develop one? Is it the brand equity in Russ and Diane or is it the story it will generate when they pick them up. The news cycle will last a nano-second and I don't think they have that kind of brand equity to equal the risk.

It will be interesting to see if Bub's Barn will advertise on their new radio home. Oh, and the shop peddling the hydroponics so you can grow "tomatos" in water.

Those are advertisers with big budgets, I tell you.
