The Return of the Whatever Weekend to 97.1

Al Timiter said:
Sports will never go away on 97.1 as long as they have the OSU contract. Many, many, many programmers, consultants and staff have made the plea that you are suggesting. But it is inbred, ingrained, indelibly imprinted in their minds that having OSU sports is far and away the most important thing they will ever do. They won't spend money on many things but they will lay down the cash for OSU. If CC or anyone else ever out-bids them, it will be a miracle.

I noticed you didn't say it was carved in stone, so that means there is a chance, right? ;D

Too bad they're too concerned with OSU ::). The whole OSU sports package must be a Wolf family deal. I can't think of any other FM station that broadcasts sports in Columbus or even Dayton for that matter-Especially a female-leaning Hot AC for crying out loud(Just think if WMMX-A successful Hot AC in Dayton-all of a sudden added Dayton Flyers football and basketball games...I can see their ratings dropping like a hot rock just talking about it). The Wolf family must make a ton of money off of the Bucks. They should focus their 50,000 watt signal on great music, great talent which they already have, improving their dated processing, and in making 97.1 a station that you DON'T want to flip away from. OSU sports makes me want to do just that everytime I hear them on my radio. ;D

The processing, or lack thereof, is something that I have noticed for a long time. compared to the competition they seem to be lower level, flat, and frankly not very appealing. The audio chain they are using may have been fine for back in the old days when they played elevator music, but isn't cutting it in the modern market.

Hey I remember those days. That was back when I was delivering the Citizen Journal on my paper route. Ooops, my age is showing.

I agree that they should update the processing. But I wonder if they leave it this way on purpose because they are among those who feel that too much procesing degrades the audio and isn't as "clean" or true to the music?

You make a valid point, but I could more readily see them using conservative processing if they were running a classical or possibly smooth jazz format. Since they are trying to go nose-to-nose with the other "mainstream" stations, it seems like they would be at a comparative disadvantage. Listen to the Q or the Blitz, both of whom seem to be running aggressive processing, then jump over to BNS and you'll see what I mean. They may be running the same peak deviation as the others but the audio density is definitely lower.

The engineering chain of command there is, to put it politely, #@*%#@*ed up. The engineering gods at Channel 10 are involved in radio's processing and overall sound. While Channel 10 has the best-looking signal in town, they have no idea about what radio processing needs to sound like to win.

Don't agree.

I like the processed sound ... but I think the flat "acoustic" sound works for that station. It sounds different from the other stations and I like it because of that. Imaging and music selection is what they need to work on.

Blue Jackets are on CD 101, Destroyers are on Wink 107, and Crew still are on The Brew

Don't forget the Cleveland Clowns on 105.7 as well. :D
Geez, those posts made me look stupid! :-[ Anyhow, my point is that WBNS-FM targets a female audience, not the male audience that CD and The Brew attract. I am guessing that the Destroyers were on when 107.1 were on when they were still WAZU(YES, I know Country attracts a female audience, i'm not that stupid). Anyhow, to clarify my post above, a station that is trying to attract 'BNS's demo airing sports is like shooting themselves in the foot. My main point is: I want to see Mix 97.1 succeed. This is a good station but could be great with a few minor, minor tweaks. They have the talent as I said in an earlier post that doesn't need tweaked, maybe moved around to different dayparts, yes. The music needs tweaked a little, yes. The processing needs tweaked, yes. The imaging needs tweaked as well. However, these are all little things that can be fixed. I wish Jay Taylor and everyone over at Mix nothing but the best. 8)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA..I'm sorry, I just read this..LOL...HAHAHAHAHAHAA...so, what you're saying is that Mix could use a little OVERHAUL..LOL...

Again-it's modern AC and talent..they can do it..80's 90's now? Whatever. Flip. Kenny Chesney. That's better.

Yeah, just what we need, more pretty-boy hillbilly country stations in Columbus. You have:
92.3 WCOL
95.5 The Hawk
100.3 T-100
WINK 107.1
Kenny Chesney is about as talented as yesterday's garbage...and I think the garbage wins. ;D
