The Rhythm Of Chicago

Been listening to 100.3 the past couple of days and

My guess is this is either:

1. A last resort
2. A quest to see if they can grab more old 103.9 listeners

I was listening to Megan Reed yesterday and she sounded all hyped up. They also seemed to have dumped the Soft AC stuff except for the occational Ace - How Long. Sunday when I was listening they went from Pebbles - Girlfriend to stopset to Barry White to Spandau Ballet. They also added a whole mess of songs that have nothing to do with the original "Love" theme.

Interesting how this all comes not long before the 5th anniversary of the death of 103-5 The Beat (January 12th)

As with Soul, it wasn't/isn't the best positioning statement. The station seems to be slanting heavy jammin' oldies which will render Lite's weekend's useless in time. The new ad campaign seems to be on point too, they just need to lose the "love", the characters listening at their desks at work on a computer is really a slick way to program people to listen while at work (for those who can't get it in their buildings). The station's numbers haven't been bad, in fact, better than any other station that's flipped in the last year - from their former format.

Sounds like the positioner for a bad dance station, like WKTU in New York or Star 93.7 in Boston

I've been listening nonstop for hours on end and checking yes.com the past 2 days. Here's an overview:

Rhythmic Oldies. Not a very deep playlist. Same songs every day.

Liners: They got a couple which sound like the overnight or morning guy did them. They also have a few with the regular Love FM voice guy. Jingle package is the same.

80s New Wave/Pop/etc:

Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You
Animotion - Obsession
Culture Club - Time
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Human League - Don't You Want Me
Naked Eyes - Promises Promises
Naked Eyes - Always Something There To Remind Me
bunch of Madonna

Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love was on this morning while I was listening.

You can obviously tell by listening that they are "evolving" before your ears. Its interesting. Reminds me of WNEW NYC when they evolved to "Move To The Mix" (Later "New York's Classic Dance")

With the added 80s stuff, it sounds very much like WWYW did in its early days.
______________

Sounds like MIX 102.7 in the early days....you're right!
Not at all like KTU. KTU plays way too many currents, especially in the evening when they are mostly currents or freestyle.
______________

I think it's not really comparable to KTU, NYC since they play way too many currents to be compared, especially in the evening hours.
Sounds more like the early days of MIX 102.7, NYC perhaps.

So no one's complaining about the music shift, I hope? I think a station like this could find a nice niche in Chicago... in fact, I believe that idea was suggested way back when WNEW in New York made the change. I did like the Love format, but I think I'd find myself listening to this a bit more. I wonder if the playlist will change much more before spring.

Is Symonds' show sounding pretty much the same musically? I really thought that he was out of place when WNND was doing 80s/90s oldies and I would hope that the mix of music on his show would not be thrown out of whack, since it was all coming together with the phones last year.
