The Ride...what is it?

Musically The Ride 95.7 WXRC seems to be all over the place. One minute they're playing a really old Beatles tune, the next minute Stevie Ray Vaughn. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I wrote to the program manager several months ago to see if they could change there format to a Jack {Adult hits} style format. I think their current format is terrible. They seem to focus alot on deep cuts and less orginal hits.

By its own definition, "Jack" is "...playing what we want." I believe The Ride is already doing that. Dave (or should I call him "Jack") Lingerfelt, the owner of the station definitely is playing what he wants. Since he has no stockholders or corporate board to answer to, he is satisfied to play exactly what he wants to play on the station. Whether it draws one listener or 100,000 that is not likely to change until he is ready to change it.

That, in itself, is a reason to admire Dave...simply because he CAN play what he wants on his station. If you want a "Jack" station in Charlote, perhaps you should do it his way.

It should be 95.7 The Bore! That has got to be the most lifeless station I can remember. I know what he is attempting to do, make it like an early 'underground FM', but man, it is cut you wrists radio! And as far as writing the PD? The owner programs it ;)

So let's see....Everyone bitches about the same ol same ol...then someone does something totally different and plays deep cuts and not the same 300 tunes...and they STILL get lambasted here.

I suppose you can't please everybody. That's why there's more than one station on the dial. Dave has been doing what he's doing for quite some time now, and you have to admire that. It is, in my humble opinion, significantly better than flavor-of-the-week cookie-cutter McRadio Stations.

Actually I wasn't lambasting them. I just wish they wouldn't play any songs that are on the fox's playlist. The Fox has such a limited playlist thanks to Clear channel, that I actually prefer The Ride for music. Oh and BTW, John Boy and Billy, get some new freaking jokes.

As far as the owner is concerned, Dave is a smart radio tycoon. He's had several offers for all three stations -- Thr Ride, Big Ways (WAIZ) and 1-2-3 Radio (WNNC). He's turned them all down....

Best of luck to Dave. Maybe one day, he'll sell....but not anytime soon.

I started the thread...not to complain but to get us off of K and Lite. I thought some other stations needed mentioning.

"The Ride" is different, I give them that and I like the stuff that doesn't fit into the "Underground FM" style of radio since I'm more of a Top 40 guy. I enjoy it when they play the old hits that no one else is playing but then they lose me when they get into something obscure (to me anyway) and harder rock.

I agree it's a true "Jack" format. You're never quite sure what will come up next. At one time I read that Dan Valle was consulting. I don't know Dan but he was a the corporate programmer for EZ communications when they owned 104.7 years ago. Later Dan was consultant for Sunny 107.9.

There is another station that has this same format "The Drive" in Chicago. I don't know if they follow the same playlist.

I'm convinced that listeners don't always know what they want in a radio station until they hear it. This is also where the AIR PERSONALITY comes in. Years ago people might sit through a few songs they didn't like if they liked the guy on the air.

Yeah, I'll give credit to Dave for playing what he wants too, but I'll have to agree with others, this station is boring. And please don't call it 'progressive rock'. It's more of a very bad attempt at classic rock. Why not throw in a couple new songs every now and then and be a triple A hybrid similar to the 'deep cuts' days back in 96-97. Not everyone wants to hear the same old stuff over and over again, not even the baby boomers he's catering to.

IMHO, some of the stations in this mkt. are a waste of 100kw.

95.7 - plays a decent tune once in awhile.

99.7 keeps playing Fleetwood Mac & Pink Floyd.

104.7 - bore fest.

I actually enjoy Lite102.9 (as opposed to almost everyone else in this post) - even if they have some repetition w/the 70's wknds. some of the songs Delilah plays, or the Disco Inferno.

At least it's variety, as opposed to other stations' repetition.

I also enjoy Mix106.1

Actually, I listen to 93.3/The Planet (they're creating a buzz - alot of people in Charlotte are listening to them), & Rock101/WROQ.

An Active Rock & a Classic Rock station, both programmed by Mark Hendrix - indescribable!

I couldn't agree more, and today's radio business is sorely lacking good personality-driven programming. Especially with some contemporary formats, I think good personalities will carry a station in times where the new music isn't so good. I notice lots of times that particularly the CHR format will go through periods where there aren't any good new songs out, and the ratings suffer at stations without good personalities.

I think I probably agree with that statement more than just about anything I've read here in a while! ;D

Amen to that. I guess it's hard to come up with new stuff when you are VTing a syndicated show as much as you are live

I can't figure out how you perceive that much difference between Lite and K. While I agree that K is not all that exciting I don't see much difference between the two stations. As far as Delilah is concerned I can't stand her syrupy delivery. She also tends to go on and on..... talking much too slowly.

Mix has been winning me over lately, nice variety of songs the other stations aren't playing.

The Country Classics format on WKKT-HD2 is very good too but of course it runs jockless. There are also no commercials!

Well, Mike, I guess we can agree to disagree about the difference between Lite & K.

As we do agree on Mix, I can't understand why their ratings aren't higher.

Reminds me of NYC radio - they had standards stations (Jonathan Schartz on WNEW & WQEW) & they flipped to Disney, so that shows you that the standards stations don't rate high, even if they're in the #1 mkt.

You can say what you want about Delilah, but she just landed a gig on 106.7LiteFM-WLTW/New York, the #1 rated station in the greatest city in the world!

I think Mix 106.1 needs to upgrade their signal. Alot of areas it is still weak. That is probably why not everyone listens to them. Their variety is very good though and unique. Are they really still adult standards though?
