The rise and uncertain future of ''pirate'' radio in Boston - Boston Phoenix

OK it isn't all that biased maybe, but I'm wondering if I'll read the following in the Globe or Herald
someday:

BOSTON--The Boston Phoenix Media Group is filing a complaint with the FCC after an unlicensed
radio station at 101.5 MHz began operating, causing interference to its broadcast outlet
WFNX (101.7 MHz) ;)

It's nice they have raised money for charity but some pirate stations run ads. Do they report this
income to the IRS?

In Ottawa a now-15-yr-old is convicted of running a pirate (repeatedly) and making death threats;` but acquitted of assault on a peace officer, etc.

If anything, this article is probably doing a lot of good, educating the average radio listener about the pirates, and making them (the listener) realize that they ARE breaking the law. 8)
 
Glorifying pirates, and their criminal behavior, is irresponsible.
Illegal practices should have clear consequences. Don't
do the crime if you can't do the time. Throw the book at 'em...
 
I'm not disputing that what they are doing is illegal and they should be gone after harder by the FCC.

But you're basically saying that no one should ever write a somewhat positive or even neutral article about anything that anyone has ever done that is legally or morally wrong.

You've never read an article about street artists and enjoyed it? About drug culture and thought "wow, I'm glad this writer immersed himself in this culture to give me a real taste"? About prisoners who may have done something wrong but are trying to get straight?

I know Pirate Radio is "wrong" and the writer isn't saying it isn't, he's pointing out what they do, how some are trying to go legal, etc.

Kill all the Pirate Radio stations you want, but don't shoot the messenger.
 
I have no intention of "shooting the messenger".
The message itself is the issue here. Advocating
anarchy that some consider to be "politically
correct" is the issue. The Phoenix has every right to print
this article. Making pirates sound sexy, or entitled,
is the real problem with this article.

By the way, "street artists" are merely vandals, if they
are "expressing themselves" by defacing somebody else's
property. I have seen enough of the "drug culture", that I
do not require a writer to "give me a real taste" of it.
Rewarding by legalizing this criminal behavior is the wrong way to go
about "sending a message" to pirates/potential pirates.
Play by the rules, or suffer the consequences.
And there should be REAL CONSEQUENCES!!
