The River 105.9

Been listening to thr River a lot lately. I have to say, I think their good showing in the recent book is well deserved. Their playlist is amazing, there's stuff on there I've not heard in years.

Any other thoughts?

No, I do not work for Clear Channel. I'll never forgive them for killing Radio 104!

To me, they seem to be a younger-skewing Soccer Mom station, much like WRCH-FM 100.5 is.<P ID="signature">______________

I think it has a MUCH larger appeal than WRCH. It's almost a combination of WPLR, 'TIC-FM, with some WRCH-type music thrown in.

I like the hour of "unplugged" material at 8 weeknights. Otherwise, the station's an OK listen, nothing more.

Yuck of a station. Poor mix, give me Lite over River any week of the day. CC should take this station and make it a Classic Rock station maybe 105.9 HCN, Hartford's Classic Rock.

Just a side note I just noticed. WHCN calls are just like WBCN calls in Boston. WHCN must of been Hartford's Concert Network years ago.

Yes they were. There was also a WRCN-FM on Long Island as well.

105.9 was Classic Rock prior to flipping to the River in 2002.

I think this is the station Clear Channel should flip to Spanish. Any heritage this station had was killed when they launched The River in 2002.

On two side notes:

1. If Clear Channel were to flip 105.9 (Or any other station except 104.1) to Spanish I'd like to see them buy WLAT 910 and launch an Oldies Format there.

2. I'd also like to see Clear Channel blow up POWER 104 and take over WKND 1230's R&B Hits/R&B Oldies format. I like WKND's format to listen to sometimes, but where I live 1230 is basically a useless frequency because 1220 and 1240 are more local in my area than 1230. Plus I have lots of trouble picking up 94.3

Were the ratings bad when WHCN was Classic Rock and Clear Channel flipped the station to Classic Hits The River?

People, people... It's not about what you want. It's about what works. WHCN, WRCH and many other stations in this market are very successful right now. If you don't like it, that's fine but don't suggest they should blow something up because you think it would be "neat." HD will offer new possibilities, and that may be where the speculation should go. In the meantime, the top stations and ones getting by may not be inclined to tamper with much. If I got to play what I'd like or what I feel in my gut would work with no info to back it up, then I'd be out on a long, weak limb! If you take nothing else out of a radio discussion, it should be that.

And there still is...103.9-WRCN, which has been a Rock station, since 1977...

And don't forget the one in New York City...WNCN.

I've been told WHCN/River is almost totally voice tracked. A shame if that's true.

Uhhh...I think that's why you'll find the format was flipped.

i only know cause i know someone who works in the candy cane building. mornings and middays are live. most weekends are live. i dont believe there's anyone (live or tracked) on overnights. ed mcmann and rachael lutzker are voice tracked. tesh is obviously satellite or taped.

> tesh is obviously satellite or taped.

Do they still syndicate shows on tape? I'd think if it wasn't satellite or downloaded, at least it would be distributed on discs nowadays.

Most shows nowadays are sent to stations electronically and can be uploaded directly into automation. It's cheaper than having to press discs and pay for postage, even for the small independent syndicators. Even the smallest of small stations have a bare-bones computer that can download soundfiles and burn them to disc for on-air playback, if that's all they have.

As far as Tesh goes, he's basically tracked. His affiliates program their own music and place his content around it.

The Concert Network

T Mitchell Hastings' late 1950's Concert Network included

WBCN Boston
WHCN Hartford
WNCN New York (Now WAXQ)
WRCN Riverhead
WXCN Providence (Now WWBB)
WCRX Springfield (Now WAQY) (* carried some programs)

The old WMTW-FM (now WHOM) carried some progams from it.

Stations don't add their own music with Tesh's program, the feed comes over with the music and his content together.

Must suck to be very wrong. Cause you are. But thanks for playing.

Actually..... the Tesh show is offered in different ways....

Either via Satellite WITH mainstream-bright AC music (which is how most of the AC Tesh affiliates run the show)

OR

via Voicetrack, where stations can then schedule their own playlist.

Thats how Tesh's show is on so many formats... WHCN-Hartford (Rock AC), KIOI-San Fran, KDMX-Dallas, and KPLZ-Seattle (all Hot AC)... KFSH-Los Angeles and WFHM-Cleveland (Christian AC)... KGOR-Omaha (Oldies).... etc.....
