The Rock Conundrum

As all of you know by now, Cumulus decided to be a tease with the WRXP call letters and New York still has no alternative station. Yet so many alternative bands have been crossing over to Z100 and Fresh. Most interestingly, the trend began just as Emmis sold RXP 1.0 to Merlin. As modern rock radio declined, more and more artists have been crossing over to the mainstream. What could be the reason for this contradiction?

Last week, when I went shopping, I found that country does enjoy one advantage over alternative. It was played in Kam Man Supermarket. So I could see why Cumulus went ahead with it (I also hear Thunder 106 at Garden Farm Market sometimes). Country is more likely to get played in public areas. You rarely (if ever) hear any modern rock station, alternative or active, when you go shopping or eat out. Still, I'm pretty sure alternative faces these same obstacles in any market.

It's only a conundrum in New York, every other market has a rock station of some sort. I think rock will make its way back in some form eventually. Country made a return, after 17 years!

In an interesting interview on Bloomberg TV, Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey explains his enthusiasm for the Nash format in New York.
He then mentions that they are also placing emphasis on sports talk and rock programming.
An Inside Radio article about this once again raises the speculation that WFAS FM may be switched to a modern rock format.
