The Rock of Winthrop

Seems that Kent Phillips has bought KVLR (Twisp) which covers both Winthrop and the Shonogan ranch down by Betty Lou's just off the crick. Winthrop is a delightful place, but there is NO business there. No car dealers, no movie theaters, no department stores, not even so much as a Starbucks.

So other than writing off your nites at the Sun Mountain Lodge, what does he see in this little popcorn popper?

Maybe it's the plan for his eventual retirement - you know, something to do because he's never programming KPLZ these days. :p

Ever think of an e-mail and asking him? His address is on the website.

I think Rob got it right, he's probably retiring. Lots of changes underway in the Fisher building and my bet is he is on his way out. Big article in the Sunday paper in the Pacific Section on the area where Kent Phillips bought a station. Seems like a nice community that would love his style of radio. I am surprised at the numbers the old guys still get, especially with women, but this is a probably a sign they are headed out to pasture. Nice way to retire.
Who will replace them at STAR? Would Jackie and Bender be a good fit. My bet is they move the afternoon show to mornings and give them a shot. FITZ might also be an option or the Whoopi show. Give them credit, Kent and Alan have been here a long time. Nice run guys.

I have heard rumors that he is retiring, but not because of bad ratings. KPLZ Mornings was virtually tied for number 1 25-54 women and in the last trend and book. Maybe he wants to go out while he is on top. I believe Kent owns or has owned several radio stations and his ownership of Eastlan ratings was a thread on this board several months ago. The guy is a multi multi millionaire and was one of the original microsoft guys too. Needless to say he does radio and tv because he wants to, not because he has to. I bet KPLZ looks outside the area for a top morning show. Not sure you could replace them with anyone in Seattle right now. Maybe Murdoch in Portland would be a good fit. FITZ is too new and green. They will want an established show to keep the older 25-54 females happy. SHould also mention he is part owner of one of the biggest advertising agencies in Seattle, a little known fact.

Let me get this straight: Kent Phillips does mornings, a tv show, is the PD and owns radio stations, an advertising agency and a big ratings company. Dude, you are either lying or this guy never sleeps. Some might say from the sound of STAR he retired long ago, but maybe he just has other things on his mind. No wonder he is rumored to be out the door at ten am. Does he have a wife, kids?

I had heard at one time that he was also a reverend (or something to that affect)...while people bash him (and alan) on this board a lot, you've got to give the guy credit for all that he does and for the long run in the area!

as for murdoch coming back to seattle, why the hell would he want to?! the guy is in his home town, in one of the top ranked stations, with one of the top ranked morning shows, with a boss who he's worked with for a while now (tony coles). what sense would it make to come back to seattle? i'll answer that...NONE

Am posting on this thread against my better judgment ... but I'm getting kind of cranky about all this crap speculation on here that is documented as truth (salaries, retirements, changes in formats, etc.). Can we TRY to make an effort to discuss stuff without pretending to be credible .. if you don't HAVE the credibility?

So ... regarding Kent...
Programs PLZ: Yes
Programs other stations in chain/outside chain: Yes
Owned stations in past, owns stations now: Yes (pending)
Retiring from Fisher or KA retiring from mornings: No
Television: Yes (including freelance commercials)
Investments in other media (inclduing research): Yes
Acting on television programs: Yes
Seminary history: Yes
Runs theatre groups in the Puget Sound (Bellevue, Tacoma): Yes
Incredibly nice and giving person: Yes
Original Microsoft person: No, but was involved in discussions when it was starting

So my point is while the Seattle board seems to be filled with a ton of "wanna-be's" ... I'd really like to see people stop bashing those who deserve our respect based on their track record and put that time and energy into making your own career what you WANT it to be .... instead of what it happens to be right now.

Thanks for setting the record straight on Kent. Heard he is a nice guy, remember reading most of this in a Tacoma newspaper profile on him last year.
Pretty amazing. After looking at the Spring book, it appears STAR remains a very strong female station, so even if he does get out the door at ten am to do all these other things, the station isn't suffering. Will be interesting to see what happens when he has JACK and MOVIN breathing down his neck looking for those female numbers.
