The Rock station that thinks its Sports/Talk

What is YSP, they say the rock station but from 5 - 8 its mostly talk, when they are not talking they are plugging the Eagles and Sports, throughout the day. If you do not want to rock, then say so. There is so much talk between the music, with corny bits and phoney calls and situations. I keep reading posts here that music is dead on AM and talk is the only viable format, but if you tried to hear any form of rock on a Philadelphia FM station last night, forget it. Between MMR and YSP talking there was no music, on the other hand the urban stations were playing tons of music. Maybe one AM station should flip to a rock format, at least we would hear music.

And then WYSP has that jackass Kidd chris on. I still say that WYSP/Infinity should make up it's mind on whether 'YSP is a rock station, or is it a talk station / or a sports station.

Looking at their ratings, who really cares what they are? They're doing good.

I understand its about the mighty dollar, but what about the listener, does he/she have any say about being underserved by the two "so called" rock outlets. I do not think YSP will be the NUMBER ONE rock station much longer, with what they are doing now. I just hope some other station comes on board with a music intense Active Rock format. This way YSP can be the Talk /Sports Station once and for all, and stop this wishey washey presentation.

Why? Active Rock, and rock in general has taken a collosal nose dive in the ratings in many markets. The music product is poor and most "active" rock stations find themselves hitting the gold library more and more to make up for a marginal music product. The Seether-Breaking Benjamin-CKY-Cold stuff truly will be the death of the format. Ironically, todays rock stations do not play the rock music that will likely be considered classic down the road; ie Arcade Fire, Kaiser Chiefs, Libertines, The Decemberists, the White Stripes, Nada Surf, Sufjan Stevens, etc. Very troubling.

The listeners are being served well, at least a larger share of the targt audience than those who feel underserved.

Its not the lack of good rock product, the music is out there. Disturbed and Trapt had the number one disks in the country the last two months. Every Rock or Alternative band still sells out in minutes. The problem is the suits will not push the rock product, it has been said time and time again, they want the Rap audiance, who in their opinion spend more and spend without thought. To answer your other statement, I do not think any Rap or Hip Hop product will be around after the initial track is over. I have never heard any of those tunes played after they are gone and forgotton, whereas Rock music stands the test of time and sounds just as good today as when it was first released. So the answer is, what the suits want they get and the people embrace it like its law.

Ya they said that about rap inthe 80s. I still hear old school rap and hip hop in lots of places. New rock fades out quickly, look at Creed. They were huge, now they're a punch line. The classics are what stay with us in any genre, there will be hits that with stand the test of time for any and all formats. It's not what the suits want its what has the ability and sound to last.

It's real simple...and WMMR used to say this about it's competiton,
TALK DOESN'T ROCK! YSP can't be a rock station and a sports talker too.

Why not? Rock and sports are highly compatible for many fans. They're simply blending the two to great effect, by the only measure we have: the numbers.

Where's your threshold for not being able to be one type of station that incorporates other elements? Is it 10%? 15%? 20%? Is it a certain number of hours? Do you count between-song chat? Only dedicated call-in shows? If it's between song chat, is it only unaccepatble if it's about sports?

More power to them for delivering a product tailor-made for young men.
