The royal wedding and the Canadian election

Next month, Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot with the whole world watching live.

Unfortunately for the Canadian networks...don't expect CBC's Peter Mansbridge and CTV's Lloyd Robertson covering it from London, because right now they're way too busy on something more important: A federal election set for May 2! But I'm sure both of them will be anchoring from their Toronto studios with one or two reporters in London, while Brian Williams (NBC), Diane Sawyer (ABC), Katie Couric (CBS), and probably Anderson Cooper (CNN) will all be on the scene for the Stateside coverage.

Can you say "bad timing", boys and girls?

I can say Modern Technology.
I can say CP24
I can say CTV NewsNet.
I can see lots of places to dump election coverage/news
while regular networks cover the wedding.
Then there's the internet. (modern technology)
A fine place to tell people to go to to see it if it boils down to that.

Theirs one political party that I cannot stand is Bloc Quebecois. What is the purpose of Bloc besides separating Quebec from Canada?

Speaking of the Canadian election (which nobody here in the States care about anyways)...just like the British election last year, I think there should be three U.S. style leaders' debates, all English-language of course: One on CTV, (podium format with Lloyd Robertson (this will be his last election before he retires this year) and Robert Fife as moderators), another on CBC (town hall with Peter Mansbridge); and one more on Global (roundtable with Dawna Friesen and possibly Kevin Newman).

And of course, C-SPAN will carry them on our side of the border.

Securing the idea that if they can't separate they can at least be a "distinct society".

And don't forget similar debates for Francophones -- one each on Radio-Canada and TVA.

C-SPAN should carry these as well, with a translator.

C-SPAN airs only the English-language debate; the last one during the 2008 election fell on the same night of the Vice Presidential debate.

And since May 2 will be on a Monday...since election night coverage will be all over the Canadian networks, that means for "Dancing With The Stars", they'll have to watch it from the States.

There will probably be a legion of people bored silly with the politicians by then...which means good news for WKBW-TV in Buffalo, which could definitely use it...and probably should get their Canadian reps working on selling spots to run that night for the north-of-the-border audience.

What Canadian reps? When there is no Sim Sub, the Buffalo signal is what the Canadian side gets.
Tons of local ads for businesses in Buffalo and some National spots for AT&T & other American Businesses. Nothing international.

Your best strong point on this may be that the Fallsview Casino should flood the Buffalo station(s) with as many ads as they can, since there will be both an American and Canadian audience.

However, the money goes directly to the American TV station, not to the Canadian one.

Same goes for WXYZ in Detroit and KOMO in Seattle.

Hmmm...yes, but in timeshift viewpoint, in Toronto, Seattle already has no sim sub (with Vancouver etc)
At least, not with Rogers cable. I'm quite thankful for that! I hate the Sim Sub.
(I think it's because a Sim sub isn't regulated for late evening/over night, but I'm not sure...)

Tell me....do you have these products in Canada?
AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Kohls, JC Penney's, Macy's, K-Mart, Jack in the BOX, Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, progressive insurance, geico insurance.....

How would Canadians without going to United states and purchase these products?

There used to be a K-mart in Canada until the 1990s, when Zeller's bought its Canadian stores. And Wells Fargo has financial offices in many parts of Canada.

As for Jack in the Box -- actually, not many Americans have them in their communities. Other than some stores in Tennessee and the Carolinas, they're generally restricted to the West Coast and the Southwest.

Most often better ads period. Also good to know what food is going for at Burger King and McDonalds.
Why do they have a 99 cent menu while we get stuck with the $1.39 menu...even though our dollar in Canada is now worth more than the American dollar!

I very much enjoy the American ads, but I also like knowing weather alerts for Buffalo and area long before I decide to travel there. I like my tv letting me know.

No mighty taco here, but always good to know they're the place to visit if I want a change from Taco bell in this WONDERFUL time for cross border shopping.

None of my business, but given that my family background is Canadian (and the fact that I'm in Canada 2-3 times a year on business), I'm always interested. But what's always fascinated me about the Bloc is when their members are elected to parliament, don't they have to take an oath of office that swears allegiance to a country they'd like to see broken up?

And as for the comment that no one here cares about Canadian elections, this is as sad as it is true. We routinely overlook (if not take for granted) our closest neighbor, biggest trading partner, and arguably our best friend. I'm not suggesting wall-to-wall U.S. news coverage of Canadian elecdtions, but I'd think these deserve better than what they gets....which is next to nothing.

At least C-Span usually picks up the CBC feed on election night. Sometimes complete with Peter Mansbridge hopping in during local breaks to explain what's going on to all half-dozen or so American viewers.

Tim Hortons does have locations in the Midwestern and Northeastern states, including New York City, where a franchisee adopted Tim Hortons after Dunkin Donuts dropped him.

RBC and TD both have US branches -- RBC, mainly in the Southeast; and TD mainly in the Northeast, though they recently expanded into Florida. I don't know if Scotiabank has any US branches, but they do in Mexico.

Doesn't Sleep Country have any US stores, mainly in the northwest? I recall a few years back of seeing a "Sleep Country USA" ad on KING-TV, and ads for them in US TV Guides in Seattle and Portland.

On that same point, is "United Furniture Warehouse" still in business? They mainly have stores in Canada, but also had branches in the Northwest US.

Winners is owned by TJX, the owner of TJ Maxx and Marshall's; they also own Homesense, which is the Canadian analogue to their US "Homegoods" chain. I think either TJ Maxx or Marshall's also used the same "You should go" slogan as Winners at one point.

As for Bounty -- if you're talking about the paper towels, we yanks got those, too.

Well....I'm a Big Turk Man, myself. Better living through Chemistry! ;D Mrs. Cyberdad claims they're made by Petro Canada!

And after lunch there's nothing like a big ol' Mint flavored Aero bar.

And I guess you prefer your weather in FAHRENHEIT temperatures rather than Celsius!

But back on-topic: CTV is planning full blown coverage of the wedding on the main network, CTV News Channel, and CP24 with Lloyd Robertson, his successor Lisa LaFlamme, and special guest Tracey Ullman.

CBC's coverage of course will be led by Peter Mansbridge (on CBC-TV and CBC News Network), while on Global, Dawna Friesen will do the same. They're all going to be in London though they'll have to get back to Toronto after the wedding in time for the election.
