The Russian Dance Format Has A New Home......

On 99.9! How powerful is the signal? I managed to pull it from Elizabeth to Manasquan on the turnpike/parkway. The funny thing is, the russian dance station battles it out with the caribbean pirate which is also on 99.9. So with the polish rap on 107.1 around Ironbound Newark, Streetz 96, that friggin 87.9, and all the others, we welcome a format which was once legal on 87.7 to 99.9FM!

Nick:

I believe it is the same one. I also believe that the pirated signal was done in by the people who had leased time on 87.7.

Does anyone know if they have website and/or streaming? I'm not located in your market, so I can not hear it.

The previous website that had streaming was http://www.vseru.com , but that does not work.

By the way, the format was not Dance, it was Russian CHR. But I think they had a couple of specialty dance shows.

Perhaps a better legal/long term solution would be to lease an FM HD2 station. Or, maybe they can get back on 87.7 if 'Pulse 87' goes under.

It was playing a lot of dance when I pulled it yesterday. I tried to listen for any imaging but it was all music, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it is from vseru or not.

This is interesting. Davidzon Media, the Russian broadcaster that leases AM 620 WSNR Jersey City/New York has sued the pirate (GorodFM) broadcasting at 99.9 FM.

http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/09/04/Russian_Radio_Station_Seeks_to_Stop_Pirate.htm

The article says that GorodFM just moved it's transmitter after the FCC told them to stop. The amount of $202,000 per month to lease WSNR seems high IMO. They could practically buy a small suburban station for the same amount as a couple of months rent. Perhaps the pirate will have to power down to a 'Part 15' station, but they can still stream on the internet.

Also, I learned that the old 'Radio Visyo' (Radio Everything) on 87.7 FM was produced by Mega Media, the same company that produces 'Pulse 87'. So actually Mega Media just changed formats with the station they were already leasing from Island Broadcasting. Therefore, GorodFM has no connection with the old Radio Visyo.

That explains why 99.9FM comes in clear in Northern Monmouth, that transmitter has to be around Coney Island.

WOW Radio Gorod is the best!!!!!!! I WISH it would overpower my station on that frequency, but the commercial one is way too powerful here.

*Note CHR stations in Europe are much more Dance heavy than U.S. but a long listen will show you that there still is enough variety to be CHR

*I used to listen to Radio Vseru, and the way to tell the difference (during the day atleast) was Vseru had SO much talking, barely any music, just talk, talk, talk, and Russian Verizon Commercials, and more talk, they were only good (in my opinion... probably because I don't speak Russian) at night especially weekend dance mixes.

Radio Gorod on the other hand is tons of music, and is is targeted to a younger and more urban audience and sounds more like the stations in Moscow. Vseru was like some New York Social Network on Radio for Rusians it seemed, and targeted maybe people in their 30's, Gorod, seems to be focusing a decade younger.

And their stream is crystal clear and easy, just click. If only I could get it here. (Probably never will in the Bronx :( ) Now, HD2 would be cool, and probably very smart. Perhaps one of the SBS stations (97.9/93.1) Since Clearly they have been HD2 testing for awhile towards ethnic markets including Caribbean, and Arabic Pop. Russian CHR I believe could generate some good advertising revenue, very targeted for an HD2.

I noticed that European-language broadcasters in the US try to provide "full service" programming during the daytime and morning/afternoon drives. As you described, they talk alot. They will have 10-15 minute interviews with sponsors who pay for the time to chit-chat about their product or service. Sometimes you may hear only 2 songs per hour. But you might hear more music at night, and specialty music shows during weekends. If the station is leased, the station owner may allow the ethnic programmer to run automated music overnights for free or at a reduced rate. Because not all of us can speak the foreign language, Americans prefer to listen to music.

That explains why 99.9FM comes in clear in Northern Monmouth, that transmitter has to be around Coney Island.

I presume that GorodFM is broadcasting from the Brighton Beach (Little Odessa) area of Coney Island, which has alot of Russian-speaking immigrants from Ukraine and Russia. Perhaps if GorodFM powers down to a 'Part 15' station, the signal can still get out quite far legally if they transmit from a tall apartment building. Or they could legally install multiple 'Part 15' transmitters in the neighborhood.

http://www.courthousenews.com/2009/09/04/RussianRadio.pdf

I read the complaint from Davidzon Media (linked above). I think they want $32 million plus attorneys' fees and costs! Some of the statements are funny, like "28. Defendants advertise their illegal enterprise on NYC Transit buses, thereby employing public property to promote their crime."

Most pirates do not air advertising. If GorodFM had no ads, and if nobody complained about interference they would not have this problem.

Absolutely an HD2 or HD3 station would be ideal for ethnic programming. If the station owners could have reasonable/affordable rates, we might hear more contemporary music in Russian, Polish, Korean, Chinese, or whatever? Emmis is running leased South Asian programming (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.) on HD2 stations in 3 markets.

UPDATE! Gorod FM is still on 99.9 as of today, and they sound like they are on 24/7 if they are on air at 3:30 in the afternoon

The online stream for 'GorodFM' (CityFM) isn't working for the past couple of days.

http://www.gorodfm.com/

I'm not located in New York. Does anyone know if the station is still on the air at 99.9 from Coney Island?

Thanks

I noticed that too, their online stream has been down for days now :(

It's a shame that the streaming for 'GorodFM' still does not work. I wonder if this has anything to do with the litigation?

If anyone is interested in hearing Russian music from actual radio stations in the U.S., here are a couple that sometimes air music during overnights:

AM 650 WSNR Jersey City, NJ / New York, 'Davidzon Radio'

http://www.davidzonradio.com/

click on the microphone at the left, Прямой эфир - LIVE! (On the Air - LIVE!)

AM 1330 WKTA Evanston, IL / Chicago, 'New Life Radio'

http://www.newliferadio.com/

click on the boombox at the left, Слушать ON-LINE (Listen ON-LINE)

There are alot of other Russian actual radio shows in the U.S. but they like to talk alot, with just a few songs per hour, or no music at all.

Wow. I am very thankful, I will have to try these links.

Your welcome.

I'm not located in New York. Could somebody check if AM 540 WLIE Islip, NY is airing Russian programming? If not, what is on this station now?

They have a website, but when you click for the stream, the pop-up box indicates 'Stream no longer available'. I think I read somewhere that 'City Radio' is off the air.

WLIE 540 is being leased to Pastor Selgado's Radio Cantico Nuevo. Radio Cantico Nuevo is also airing on 1430 WNSW (Newark), 990 WXCT (Southington, CT), and WBQN 1160 AM Barceloneta-Manati, Puerto Rico. Radio Cantico Nuevo is a Spanish Christian network that is programmed on the cheap. Both WNSW and WXCT are picking up the network's feed from a computer hooked up to their control board that is piping in their web stream. Not all programming airs on all the stations and WLIE airs quite a bit of programming not on WNSW/WXCT. (They have their own seperate legal ID). http://www.radiocanticonuevo.com/

The top of the hour ID on WNSW/WXCT is as follows (not legal by any means) WNSW 1430 AM Newark-New Jersey, WXCT 990 AM Connecticut-Massachusetts, WBQN 1160 AM Barceloneta Puerto Rico! Yeah. Um. Last time I checked the FCC's regulations the legal ID is The Calls and the City of Licensed. Though they do allow the frequency in-between The Calls and the Cit of License. Therefore the ID should be WXCT 990 AM Southington. Or WXCT Southington. (Luckily for WXCT's owner Davidson Media Group there is still a seperate automation computer hooked up that plays an old Legal ID done by their former Operations Manager Charlie Profit. WXCT Southington).
