WLIE 540 is being leased to Pastor Selgado's Radio Cantico Nuevo. Radio Cantico Nuevo is also airing on 1430 WNSW (Newark), 990 WXCT (Southington, CT), and WBQN 1160 AM Barceloneta-Manati, Puerto Rico...

The top of the hour ID on WNSW/WXCT is as follows (not legal by any means) WNSW 1430 AM Newark-New Jersey, WXCT 990 AM Connecticut-Massachusetts, WBQN 1160 AM Barceloneta Puerto Rico! Yeah. Um. Last time I checked the FCC's regulations the legal ID is The Calls and the City of Licensed. Though they do allow the frequency in-between The Calls and the Cit of License. Therefore the ID should be WXCT 990 AM Southington. Or WXCT Southington. (Luckily for WXCT's owner Davidson Media Group there is still a seperate automation computer hooked up that plays an old Legal ID done by their former Operations Manager Charlie Profit. WXCT Southington).

Another Russian station in New York that bit-the-dust was AM 1380 WKDM New York 'Narodnaya Volna' (People's Wave), which was on the air full-time from 2003 - 2006. Before WKDM, 'Narodnaya Volna' was leased for 8-10 hours per day on AM 930 WPAT Paterson, NJ / New York. This show was related to New York's daily Russian newspaper 'Novoe Russkoe Slovo' (New Russian Word).

I noticed at night, this station is non-stop automated music. No DJ's, no station ID's, no liners, no imaging, no commercials, nothing except music.

IMO New York could use a couple more Russian stations or shows. Chicago (with a smaller Russian-speaking population) has 3 stations talking-away during Morning Drive (2 in Russian and 1 in Ukrainian), and 3 stations during Evening Drive (all in Russian).

I think the cost to lease a radio station must be higher in New York. Plus, there are more different ethnic groups in New York wanting to broadcast shows.

This is New York City, not Moscow. Russian is a good format for HD2s and struggling AMs, not major market FMs (87.7 included). The cost to lease 87.7 is...let's put it this way...several hundred thousand per month.

That's not the way I look at it. This is New York City, not Indianapolis. New York is home to more Russian-speaking people than any other metro area in the country. I totally agree however that Russian programming does not belong on major market FMs, but would be a nice place for HD2s and smaller AMs as you mentioned.

What I don't understand is that New York presently has only 1 licensed station speaking in Russian, AM 620 WSNR 'Davidzon Radio'. For whatever reason, AM 540 WLIE 'City Radio' and AM 1380 WKDM 'People's Wave' were full time stations which stopped Russian-language programming. But I think there could be room for 2 more stations if the cost to lease is reasonable.

Plus, there are some other shows not listed that air just 1 day per week. IMO 'Gorod FM' is better than any of the ones listed above because they play alot of music.

Now that 'Pulse 87' has gone off the air, people are speculating that Russian music may be returning to WNYZ-LP because they ended with "Back in the U.S.S.R." by the Beatles.

That would be nice but I'm not so sure that will happen because Mega Media, the bankrupt owner of 'Pulse 87' also was the owner of 'Radio Visyo' ('Radio Everything') which aired on WNYZ-LP prior to 'Pulse 87'.

If the Russian music does return, perhaps the station will be programmed by a different company. I think Mega Media is behind on their payments to Island Broadcasting (the actual owner of WNYZ-LP), so Mega probably can not return until that is settled.

Does anyone know what was the monthly cost to lease the station from Island Broadcasting? Whoever it is that may want to lease the station, they have to be certain that the advertising revenue will be greater than the cost to operate and lease the frequency (which is not cheap).

They also should consider at some point, perhaps a few years from now, that low-power TV stations will be required to convert to digital only and to vacate their analog signals. When that happens, the station no longer can be received at 87.7 using an FM radio. Also, I heard that a full power TV station in Philadelphia, also on Channel 6, wants to boost it's power which could cause some interference.

It makes little sense to me that they would end with the song "Back in the U.S.S.R." because that country stopped to exist in 1991.

Another possibility is that they played "Back in the U.S.S.R." because it's their way of saying that the radio landscape is returning to "No-fun, no-freedom, corporate-mediocre" radio that Pulse 87 wanted to be different from.

Well, enjoy the weekend music because by Monday things may get a little less fun. Internet may be the last great hope.

If I was working for JVC, or Island Broadcasting, I'd give you a definite answer.   8)

It would be much better if someone went after that Compact FM pirate on 87.9 tho.

Does anyone know if they have website and/or streaming? I'm not located in your market, so I can not hear it.

The previous website that had streaming was http://www.vseru.com , but that does not work.

By the way, the format was not Dance, it was Russian CHR. But I think they had a couple of specialty dance shows.

Perhaps a better legal/long term solution would be to lease an FM HD2 station. Or, maybe they can get back on 87.7 if 'Pulse 87' goes under.
