The Sad Truth About the Future of ABC6

I know I'm wasting both my and your time uselessly driveling about ABC6, but I do feel that this does need to be heard. We all know that the station is at the lowest that it's ever been, as far as I've been watching. Rarely will you see stories about murders, shootings, fires, accidents, and the like, contrary to its counterparts, especially WPRI. In the past couple of years, they've switched over to a contemporary environmental/lifestlye format, and I hate it with a passion. It hasn't changed a thing; actually, it made matters so much worse. Little to no live reports, missing out on breaking news (a couple of weeks ago, they slept on murders in Fall River and North Attleboro), they stick with the format thinking ratings are going to change. They're not!

You know what I fear about the possible sale of the station. Either Raycom, Sinclair, Nextar, or another third-rate company is going to buy the station and not change anything at all about its news operation. There's no way Hearst Argyle, Belo, or even the network will take one glance at it.

Rumors have been rampant for the past couple of years that Hearst-Argyle will purchase WLNE, and make it a satellite station to WCVB...basically, making it a "bureau" newsroom. Thus, most of the news department losing their jobs, due to consolidation. I would hate to see this happen (folks losing their jobs). I would hate to see a company like Nexstar buy them and rape the place. They don't have very much as it is, but an outfit like Nexstar would find ways to take more and more away from them. Sook the Schnook got rid of the Associated Press wire service at all their stations, in a cost-cutting move.

I agree with Ethan's opinion as well. It seems they are getting away from "breaking news" type stories. Yes, they were not on the ball with the recent Fall River and North Attleboro murders. They had no presence at the Cranston house fire a couple of days ago. I also see very little or no live shots on anything. The North Attleboro murder was more of a story, based on things like that don't happen in that town very often! The other two Providence stations, along with the Boston stations, were all over that story.

I wish nothing but the best for Channel 6. They have good people there, but they just don't have the resources to put on a newscast, like WPRI and WJAR do.

John: I second that!!!! ;D

When you tune into ABC6 it feels like you are tuning in on a Holiday and nobody is there to do their job. Everybody must have the day off. But then you realize that it's just like this every day! It's so sad.

I don't know what the future brings for this place, but I just assume watch reruns of Press Your Luck and Tattletales at 6 and 11. The ratings would improve.

Thanks Shawn. I like how we do see eye to eye on some things. :)
