THE SAVAGE NATION AND WHP580

One of WHP 580's Murderer's Row hosts has won his arbitration suit against his syndicator, and is off the air for a period of time before he hooks up with another employer. So I'm guessing a lengthy string of fill-in hosts on The Savage Nation for a bit, but then ...

Who do you figure takes over 9p to 12a on the mighty 580? What host has the awesome power to lead into Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis?

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Mark Levin. Or, if I can really dream big, a return of Phil Hendrie.

What do you peeps think?

I think that 3 hours of dead air would be an improvement over the constant boom, boom, boom of ultra right wing bashing.

WSBA and WHP boom, boom, boom all day and night long...ENOUGH ALREADY!!

The demographics for talk radio continue to get older and older to a point where the snake oil salesman who push pills and elixers on the weekend might have to take over the weekday schedules too. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM to the 60+ mad as Hell Central Pennsylvanians who in many cases should be taken off the road.

Will WHP or WSBA ever try something different? How about a locally produced talk show that covers topics of interest in the MidState without a political BOOM,BOOOM point of view. Durgin hates taxes, unions, Obama, Government, etc. the same BOOM, BOOM that we hear all day from ElRushbo, Hannity, Beck, etc., etc. BOOOOOOOOM!

If you've ever heard The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC up in New York, that would be a great model for a local talk show. They discuss politics, but have both sides represented and it's pretty bipartisan. But they also discuss local events, cultural stuff, etc.

Bryan Leherer would be too intellectual for Central Pa. Yes, I have heard him and I am a 35 year veteran of Noo Yawk radio.
No, I am not a left wing///know-it-all, however, I have to confess that talk radio of general interest is probably a pipe dream in this region:

It takes quite a bit of talent (well rounded) to be able to pull this format off. (Listen to WBZ overnight).

Talent costs $$$$. It ain't gonna happen around here....NEVA, FUGHEDABOUDIT!!

So, BOOM, BOOM, Sutton, Durgin etc, etc....if they survive the coming cuts at Cumulus and Clear Channel.

I like Savage for the most part...but good grief - I was just at his site and he is charging $4.95 to view his first 45 minute internet broadcast...not for me. ::)

In Pittsburgh, Jerry Doyle slid nicely into the 6-9 p.m. slot on WPGB-104.7. They're doing something from 9-midnight but I can't put my finger on it, except that it seems little better than a test pattern.

As for Savage, I commend him for his getting out of the Talk Radio Network deal, but I really don't see him getting back on terrestrial radio. It's either going to be something subscriber-only on the web or he'll wind up somewhere in the satellite universe.

Hello
My wife is a fan of Michael Savage and unfortunately she is unable to hear him on WSBA.
We live in southern Pa ( New Freedom) near the Maryland border and WSBA's night time signal just doesn't cut it down here.Is anyone aware of other stations in my area ( or 50kws ) that might be carrying 'Savage" ? Many thanks.

81 WGY in Schectady was a 50 K that ran the show. I would think you'll eventually see Savage on Cumulus stations 770 WABC in NYC, 760 WJR in Detroit, and 890 WLS in Chicago. All 50K who blow into the area. Since Savage signed with Cumulus, these are likely stations.

Thank you all for the info. WJR-760 in Detroit has a listenable signal in my area "The great voice of the Great Lakes".Anything to make the wife happy. :

Why should they? Despite what you say about the demos, at least in the case of WHP, it's still successful. SBA is another whole story.

Clear Channel has been swinging the axe in markets all over the country today. PD"s, producers and on-air personalities are being let go just in time to celebrate Christmas.

It remains to be seen as to what will happen at 580. In the year 2012 it is very, very unusual for a station serving a market the size of Hburg to have two locally produced high profile talk shows AM/PM Drive.

If Harris and Durgin survive...GREAT, however, I suspect that cuts will be made at HP...news department (what is left of it) and production staff. Live, local radio is almost dead all over the U.S. Syndicated Conservative blather is killing AM listening!! Check the numbers out ... coast to coast the under 55 audience is rapidly fading into the shadows for AM radio.

Rush, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc. are just a bunch of angry white men flailing away at the Democrats.

I believe that talk radio can live and live well, however, it desparately needs to broaden the base and Clear Channel is not going to spend $$$$ to attempt to resurrect stations that are way, way past their prime.

No. Liberal talk has been tried and failed. Stations that have tried to balance usually don't succeed either. Talk Radio is the one place where you can get a different viewpoint because all the TV networks are shills for the left. Except for Fox News where both positions are presented.

Live and local "conservative" talk. Sure. Put it on an FM.

"Fox where both positions are presented" Ya gotta be kidding!! MSNBC and Fox are mirror images of each other.

I would love to see a cable network have real opposing views, well presened and constantly debated.

Once upon a time in Noo Yawk WABC had a sensational, very well received (solid ratings) AM Drive show, Curtis and Kuby.
The two could not be further apart in their views and it was a hoot to listen to each day. Ron Kuby a far left leaning lawyer, excuse me, VERY FAR LEFT and Ron Kuby the founder of The Guardian Angels.

The show left the air after the two hosts agreed to totally disagree with each other when Kuby ended up defending a criminal in court who tried to kill Kuby....yepper, that in itself was SENSATIONAL GREAT RADIO!!!! Imus replaced Curtis and Kuby (Imus is only a shadow of what he once was) and Noo Yawk radio is not better off.

Central Pa. talk radio is boring, boring, boring and what little there is that is live offers very little in the way of OPPOSING VIEWS" Fair and Balanced....&^%$*^!!!
