The Searcy radio market

Are there certain criteria that need to be met in order for a city/area to be designated as an Arbitron market? I'm wondering if Searcy will be one soon. There are quite a few stations in Searcy. They are:

KWCK, 99.9FM- Country(Crain Media)
KAWW, 100.7FM- Hot AC(Crain Media)
KSMD, 99.1FM- News/Talk(Crain Media)
KWCK 1300 AM/KAPZ 710 AM/KAWW AM- News/Talk(Crain Media)
KFXV, 105.7 FM- Hot AC(Sudbury Broadcasting)*
KVHU, 95.3 FM- Variety(Harding University)*
KFLI, 104.7FM- Oldies(Searcy Broadcasting)*

*= LMA, all of these stations are actually owned by Flinn Broadcasting

if i'm not mistaken, which i could be, i believe that somebody in the market has to actually pay the $$$ to subscribe to arbitron, and there has to be at least a certain population for the market to be rated. isn't it all based on percentages anyway? if you only have 30,000 people and only 8 stations in the area (not counting the LR and other nearby stations you might be able to hear), there might only be 40 diaries sent out (not accurate, i know.) how can you get ratings based on that? i don't think searcy could even count as an "embedded market" to the LR dma either. as i say this, i realize that hot springs is a rated market now, what with it's 12+ population of 83,000 or so...somebody paid for it too. the smallest market listed is aspen, colorado at #302 with a little over 57,000. searcy does not quite hit 21,000 according to the 2006 population estimates.

i'm sure there is someone who will explain it better.

I've never heard of a market being imbedded in another market... ???
But some Searcy stations COULD show up in the LR ratings....
There are County Coverage reports from Arbitron for smaller markets, and they are probably more accurate than the Big City Slicker ratings... ;)
You can find out a lot by going to www.arbitron.com
They have a lot of free reports, and tools for PD's and Sales Types... ;D
It's almost as good as this site for daily reading and entertainment.
I will say this...Searcy has some talented folks who have a real passion for radio...The slackers in LR should watch their backs!!!

there aren't that many embedded markets - example: santa rosa (#119) is an embedded market to san francisco (#4). santa rosa is in the SF dma, and it's a separate market from san francisco. you'll see stations from both cities in ratings from both cities.

at least that's my understanding of an "embedded" market.

i ain't that smart.

;)

Theoretically, could an embedded market work the same as a micropolitan area(which Searcy is considered to have one)? Could the Batesville stations be combined with the Searcy stations to possibly make a market? I know little about what makes an Arbitron market, but could that be possible?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to be "imbedded", wouldn't you have to have a "city-grade" signal? Example, KEZA in Fayetteville has a city-grade signal in Fort Smith.
