The Seeburg 1000

For your listening and dancing pleasure:
http://76.79.109.219:8000/

There's another similar Seeburg 1000 stream called "Radio Coast", run by a different guy, on http://199.16.186.38:8407/ . The fidelity's a bit higher, but he really ruined it when he started putting his "news on the hour" and occasional time-of-day talk-ins into the stream.

Ergo, the "original" Seeburg 1000 stream is way better overall.

Listening to those Cool Bubbly lit Wurlitzers back in the 50's, then came the Seeburgs with their modern (albeit, Art Deco look) look, sharp lines, and all those colors. that light green and Coral combination was pretty cool. Juke-boxes and my little AM radio, and I was hooked for life, my wife sez I need therapy. I soaked it up like a sponge, The artist, the year, the label, the flip-side, the chart position, artist /group history, it was like a drug for me, still is. In the words of the Animals back in the mid-fifties "It's My life, and I'll do what I Want". Oh yeah, that was on MGM, charted #................ see, maybe I do need therapy.

This site with the Seeburg music library is great! I love that it is soooo mind numbing, and reality dissolving. I can sit back and stare at the ceiling and count the paint ripples..and I can blink to the tempo of these relaxing easy favorites with visions of subtle gold tones and candlelight hues.. .it is like a large glass of whiskey and no food..it calms, deadens and erases all memory...it is like novacaine for your life..after listening to this I can no longer function..I can't buy groceries, or consider purchasing anything at a store..nor go out of the house because I might miss a tune....

I just wanna buy one of these things somewhere......

Hey Bong--

The records themselves also come up sometimes on the 'Bay and Amazon. If you have a turntable that runs at 16 RPM and has a light enough (i.e. counterweighted) tone arm, that'll also work if you need a quick fix. Most decent magnetic cartridges with LP needles will play them just fine. You certainly want to stay away from those horrible red Chuo Denshi ceramic pickups that just about everything comes with these days. Those usually have "hybrid" needles designed to play LPs and 78s, and will probably tear a perfectly good S1K record to shreds on the first playback! Obviously, I never let them come in contact with *any* of my records, period.

Ummmmmmm.....not necessarily. You can still get away with using a regular 0.7-mil LP needle if you set your tracking force somewhat light. Remember, part of the way they were able to achieve such a high groove density is by doing a "shallow" cut (i.e. rolling off everything below ~300 Hz or so), kind of like those "30-hits-on-one-LP" records in the '70s. This also explains why they tend to have a rather flat frequency response, which is especially noticeable when listening through earphones.

Using a proper turntable with a counterweighted tone-arm and magnetic cartridge adjusted to the proper tracking force, or somewhat lighter, and a needle that's not broken or worn down is critical to preventing damage to any record!
