The singer of Green Day

Some of the songs are tolerable. If only someone else sang them. Is Billy Joe of Green Day the worst singer ever in music? I tend to think so.

People have been trying to sell me on Bright Eyes for a while. I have not been impressed! When they were on the Liberal tour with REM, Fogerty, and Springsteen they really stood out as a bunch of goofs who did not belong. Michael Stipe and Bruce coaxed the singer into singing a verse of Elvis Costello's Peace Love and Understanding and he was hilariously squeamish.

Or Coldplay. The guy over-emotes more than every band on Vagrant Records put together. And what about Tom Delonge from Blink 182? His nasal, eardrum-piercing whimper makes the band's simplistic pop-punk even more irritating.

As I'm sure you know, punk music is based around the idea of nonconformism and breaking the rules. Conventional music requires a singer with a good voice. Almost all rock bands have a lead singer whose voice sounds more like constant yelling than anything else... but it created a unique sound that has become a staple of punk and hard rock. Personally I like stuff from Green Day and other related groups, but I also appreciate that they're a commercial sound that, for the most part, doesn't experiment with music in an artistic way (Green Day's latest album is one of the exceptions to this rule :).<P ID="signature">______________
