With K-Rock going to a most-talk format at the beginning of next year (playing some rock on weekends), will any of the other stations or their owners jump at flipping any of their stations to fill the void. Reason I bring this up is there are 5 stations (WPLJ, WCBS-FM, WNEW, WKTU and WLTW) that share about 60-70% of the same music. Such an overlap has brought only one definite front-runner (WLTW) and 4 laggers near the back of the pack. Perhaps WPLJ does the best of the other 4 based on billing. This may be a good opportunity for either ABC or Clear Channel to launch a rocker (hopefully alternative) to the market. Clear Channel has a number of alternative stations around the country(yes, they're cookie-cutter and play lots of Nickelback, but NYC would take anything at this point). With Howard Stern leaving the airwaves, rock stations that remain will probably see a gain in the ratings, believe it or not, because the Stern listeners now that won't get Sirius--and there will be a lot of them--will be tuning in to the local rock/alternative/classic rock station. And the Stern listeners that do get Sirius to follow Stern won't even be tracked by Arbitron in the first place. If no other station flips to rock after K-Rock departs, expect Q104.3 to be in the top 5 12+, and top 3 25-54. And I'm not joking.
So Clear Channel, how about bring the rock to 103.5?
